Text 4
W: Parker, when do you want me to wake you up in the morning? At 7:00?

M: I’d like to, but I’ve already had an appointment with Craig for dinner tonight. Hey, why don’t you join us? After the meal, we can go shopping. I’m sure Craig needs some T-shirts, too. Since I’ve got a bit fat, I’d like to get a few pairs of new pants.

Text 10
Here is a piece of news from someone loving both animals and art. There’s a pig called Pigcasso on a farm in South Africa. She’s a pig who loves to eat and roll in the mud. But she’s also one of the world’s most famous young artists. Her paintings sell for thousands of dollars.
As a piglet, Pigcasso had a black future. She was raised on a big farm to be killed for meat. An animal rights activist named Joanne Lefson rescued her in 2016. In order to keep her new piglet busy, she threw some toys into the pen, including some paintbrushes. Pigcasso ate everything except the brushes. So Lefson taught her to paint. Before long, Pigcasso earned her name. It came from the famous Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. In 2017, a lawyer from New York visited the farm. He bought a painting for about $500. And Pigcasso’s fame spread quickly after that. Next year, she had an art show in South Africa. It was the first show ever by a non-human artist.
Experts any pigs are smart creatures. They have good memories, and they recognize bow other pigs are feeling. Lefson hopes Pigcasso can make people think a little differently about the animals they eat. She wants them to realize that, “There’s more to pigs than bacon.”

William Dunn is the founder of Take a Kid Fishing, Inc, a nonprofit organization in Lakeland, Florida, which teaches poor and fatherless kids through the sport of fishing.
A dozen years ago, inspired by his six-year-old fatherless neighbor, Cam ran, who got angry and shouted at his mom, William asked Cam ran’s mom for permission to take Cam ran fishing. Cam ran was “hooked” from that first trip. The two fished together several times a week, and William saw positive changes in Cam ran’s behavior. “That’s when I realized that I had the duty to help fatherless kids,” he says.
On weekends, William and a few other volunteers take 20 to 25 kids out fishing on a rental boat, which was supported by the captain of the Double Eagle. Many have never been fishing or even on a boat, so William—or Big Will, as the kids call him — starts by teaching the basics. Then come the life lessons that fishing offers: patience, teamwork and the simple joy of relaxing in the outdoors. Take a Kid Fishing, Inc. has taken more than 600 fishing trips with almost 2,000 kids who don’t have a father in their lives.
He wants to share his love of fishing with kids who don’t have a father to take them. “I just want to show them that I care about them, that I’m there for them,” he says. Because many kids go on multiple trips, William is able to build relationships with them. He and Cam ran, now 20, still regularly fish together, and Camran sees Big Will as a father figure.
Take a Kid Fishing, Inc., has a huge impact, but it started because William wanted to help one kid. Do you know a child who might benefit from your friendship? Introduce them to fishing or another hobby you enjoy. You can make a great difference to their life.
24. What inspired William Dunn to found Take a Kid Fishing, Inc.?
A. Kids’ passion for fishing.
B. Positive changes of a fatherless neighbor.
C. Unfortunate experiences of fatherless kids.
D. Behavior of other volunteers to help fatherless kids.
25. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. Many kids expected fishing experiences.
B. Few kids participated in the fishing trips.
C. The organization taught more than basic skills.
D. The fishing boat was offered by other volunteers.
26. We do we know about William Dunn from the text?
A. He is an experienced captain.
B. He thinks company matters in kids’ lives.
C. He had an unhappy childhood as a fatherless kid.
D. He wanted to raise money for the fatherless kids.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?

根据第二段“A dozen years ago, inspired by his six-year-old fatherless neighbor, Cam ran, who got angry and shouted at his mom, William asked Cam ran’s mom for permission to take Cam ran fishing. Cam ran was “hooked” from that first trip. The two fished together several times a week, and William saw positive changes in Cam ran’s behavior. “That’s when I realized that I had the duty to help fatherless kids,” he says.(十几年前,他6岁的没有父亲的邻居卡姆兰对妈妈发脾气,威廉受到启发,请求卡姆兰的妈妈允许他带卡姆兰去钓鱼。卡姆·兰从第一次旅行开始就“上瘾”了。两人每周一起钓鱼几次,威廉看到了卡姆兰行为上的积极变化。“那时我意识到我有责任帮助那些没有父亲的孩子,”他说)”可知,一个没有父亲的邻居的积极变化启发威廉·邓恩创立了“带孩子钓鱼公司”。故选B。
25.推理判断题。根据第三段“Then come the life lessons that fishing offers: patience, teamwork and the simple joy of relaxing in the outdoors.(然后是钓鱼带给我们的人生教训:耐心、团队合作以及在户外放松的简单乐趣)”可推知,该组织教授的不仅仅是基本技能。故选C。

Crossing Phoenix, Arizona, are 180 miles of canals. In 1867, the city’s founding father, Jack Swilling saw the remains of irrigation (灌溉) channels wandering across the landscape. He realized that, centuries before, some society had farmed this desert. Soon after, Swilling began clearing the blocked canals to bring agriculture back to the region.
Three years later, Swilling and other pioneers met to consider names for their settlement. The top two were Pumpkinville and Stonewall. Luckily, English adventurer Darrell Duppa proposed a name inspired by the resurrection (复兴) of the canals. “A great race once lived here and another great race will live here in the future,” he considered. “I predict that a new city will spring, phoenix-like, from the ruins and ashes of the old.”
Gary Huckleberry, a researcher, said, “In the southwest, we have some serious issues to deal with in terms of water. The Colorado River is the main source of water for the southwest and it’s over distributed. We’ve got population growth and climate change. How are we going to deal with that? I think there’s something to be learned by looking at past societies who managed water for thousands of years.”
That great society was the Hohokam. Between 100 and 1450 AD, they constructed 1,000 miles of canals. As the Hohokam expanded their network, they constantly repaired, cleaned and diverted the canals. “It requires cooperation, because all the users of the water from that canal have to agree not only to construct it, but also to maintain it,” Henderson, a scientist, said. “Users would have to agree to certain conditions to keep the entire system going.” The Hohokam committed to sharing water and put themselves on timetables.
The Hohokam used canal irrigation for 3000 years. “That, to me, is the definition of sustainable development,” Huckleberry said. “They learned how to sustainably farm, to manage water, to not destroy their soils in a way that is worthy and might give us insight into how we might deal with the current trouble. I think one of the key lessons is that you don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”
28. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The reconstruction of canals. B. The origin of the city’s name Phoenix.
C. The discovery of the irrigation channels. D. The agricultural development in the settlement.
29. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The source of water. B. The climate change.
C. The population growth. D. The over-distribution of water.
30. What does Henderson say about the Hohokam?
A. They were expert in farming. B. They were poor at time management.
C. They had a strong sense of team spirit. D. They fought for their rights to use water.
31. Which of the following would Huckleberry agree with?
A. Canal irrigation is out of date. B. Sustainable development matters.
C. Farming can solve current trouble. D. The loss of soils is worse than before.
B 29. D 30. C 31. B
根据第二段中“Three years later, Swilling and other pioneers met to consider names for their settlement. The top two were Pumpkinville and Stonewall. Luckily, English adventurer Darrell Duppa proposed a name inspired by the resurrection (复兴) of the canals.(三年后,Swilling和其他拓荒者开会考虑给他们的定居点起什么名字。前两名是Pumpkinville和Stonewall。幸运的是,英国冒险家Darrell Duppa以运河的复兴为灵感,提出了一个名字)”可知,第二段主要介绍了凤凰城起名的经过,拓荒者开会讨论了起名方案,英国冒险家Darrell Duppa以运河的复兴为灵感提出了凤凰城(Phoenix)这个名字。由此可知,B项“凤凰城名字的由来”可概括段落大意。故选B项。
29.词句猜测题。根据第三段中“In the southwest, we have some serious issues to deal with in terms of water. The Colorado River is the main source of water for the southwest and it’s over distributed. We’ve got population growth and climate change. How are we going to deal with that?(在西南地区,我们有一些严重的水的问题需要处理。科罗拉多河是西南地区的主要水源,但是分布过散。我们面临着人口增长和气候变化。我们要怎么处理呢?)”可知,因为人口增长和气候变化,水资源的问题愈发突出,需要解决科罗拉多河的水过于分散带来的问题。that指代的是上文的“it’s over distributed”,即水的分布过散。故选D项。
根据倒数第二段中Henderson的话“It requires cooperation, because all the users of the water from that canal have to agree not only to construct it, but also to maintain it(这需要合作,因为这条运河的所有用水者不仅要同意建造它,还要同意维护它)”可知,霍霍坎人在使用运河的时候共同合作,建造并维护运河,因此他们富有团队精神。故选C项。
根据最后一段中Huckleberry的话“They learned how to sustainably farm, to manage water, to not destroy their soils in a way that is worthy and might give us insight into how we might deal with the current trouble.(他们学会了如何可持续地耕种,如何管理水资源,如何不破坏他们的土壤,这些都是有价值的,可能会让我们了解如何应对当前的问题)”可知,霍霍坎人使用运河的方式恰恰体现了可持续发展的理念,这种方式是有价值的,可以帮助我们应对当今的问题。
D
Can a small group of drones(无人机)guarantee the safety and reliability of railways and, at the same time, help railway operators save billions of euros each year? That is the very likely future of applying today’s “eyes in the sky” technology to making sure that the millions of kilometres of rail tracks and infrastructure(基础设施)worldwide are safe for trains on a 24/7 basis.
Drones are already being used to examine high-tension electrical lines. They could do precisely the same thing to inspect railway lines and other vital aspects of rail infrastructure such as the correct position of railway tracks and switching points. The more regularly they can be inspected, the more railway safety, reliability and on-time performance will be improved. Costs would be cut and operations would be more efficient(高效)across the board.
That includes huge savings in maintenance costs and better protection of railway personnel safety. It is calculated that European railways alone spend approximately 20 billion euros a year on maintenance, including sending maintenance staff, often at night, to inspect and repair the rail infrastructure. That can be dangerous work that could be avoided with drones assisting the crews’ efforts.
By using the latest technologies, drones could also start providing higher-value services for railways, detecting faults in the rail or switches, before they can cause any safety problems. To perform these tasks, drones for rail don’t need to be flying overhead. Engineers are now working on a new concept: the rail drones of the future. They will be moving on the track ahead of the train, and programmed to run autonomously. Very small drones with advanced sensors and AI and travelling ahead of the train could guide it like a co-pilot. With their ability to see ahead, they could signal any problem, so that fast-moving trains would be able to react in time.
32. What makes the application of drones to rail lines possible?
A. The use of drones in checking on power lines.
B. Drones’ ability to work at high altitudes.
C. The reduction of cost in designing drones.
D. Drones’ reliable performance in remote areas.
33. What does “maintenance” underlined in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Personnel safety. B. Assistance from drones.
C. Inspection and repair. D. Construction of infrastructure.
34. What function is expected of the rail drones?
A . To provide early warning. B. To make trains run automatically.
C. To earn profits for the crews. D. To accelerate transportation.
35. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. What Faults Can Be Detected with Drones
B. How Production of Drones Can Be Expanded
C. What Difficulty Drone Development Will Face
D How Drones Will Change the Future of Railways
32-35 ACAD
32. A。 根据文章第二段“Drones are already being used to examine high-tension electrical lines. They could do precisely the same thing to inspect railway lines and other vital aspects of rail infrastructure such as the correct position of railway tracks and switching points.(无人机已经被用于检查高压电线。他们完全可以做同样的事情来检查铁路线路和铁路基础设施的其他重要方面,如铁路轨道和换乘点的正确位置)”可知使用无人机检查电力线路使无人机应用于铁路线路成为可能。故选
33. C。词义猜测题。根据后文“It is calculated that European railways alone spend approximately 20 billion euros a year on maintenance, including sending maintenance staff, often at night, to inspect and repair the rail infrastructure. (据统计,仅欧洲铁路公司每年在铁路维护上的花费就约为200亿欧元,其中包括经常在夜间派遣维修人员检查和维修铁路基础设施)”可知花在maintenance上的费用是用于“inspect and repair the rail infrastructure (检查和维修铁路基础设施”,由此可知“That includes huge savings in maintenance costs and better protection of railway personnel safety”是指大幅节省检修成本和更好地保护铁路人员安全,划线词和 C项:Inspection and repair(检修)含义相近。故选C。
34. A。事实细节题 根据最后一段第一句 … detecting faults in the rail or switches, before they can cause any safety problems. 以及最后一句 … they could signal any problem, so that fast-moving trains would be able to react in time.
根据文章主题段第一段“Can a small group of drones(无人机)guarantee the safety and reliability of railways and, at the same time, help railway operators save billions of euros each year? 36.上文“Having a clean and organized workspace takes time and effort—especially if we want to keep it that way. (拥有一个整洁有序的工作空间需要时间和精力——尤其是如果我们想要保持这种状态的话。)”可知,此处表达了“保持工作场所干净整洁费时费力”,C项“But the results are more than worth it. (但结果是值得的)”,与上文的语义为转折关系,其中的it,指代takes time and effort。C项与上文语意衔接连贯。故选C项。

(有一个干净的工作空间可以带来很多意想不到的好处。现在让我们来看看其中的一些。)”可知,下文将列出整洁干净的工作空间带来的好处,根据本段内容“Untidiness can be a distraction that interferes with your thought process and prevents you from being as effective as you can be. When your workspace is clean and organized, you can spend more time focused on your tasks, without the unorganized chaos to attend to. 故选A项。

39.下文“However, to the outsider, you may look overwhelmed and incapable of taking on extra projects. (然而,对于局外人来说,你可能会看起来不知所措,无法承担额外的项目。)”中的however可知,此句与设空处存在语意上的转折,根据D项“Maybe you feel productive with papers scattered around (也许你觉得纸张散落在周围很有效率)”可知,纸张散落在周围,在你自己看来是工作效率高,在别人看来,却是你能力欠缺的表现。上下文语意连贯顺畅。故选D项。
40.上文“Fortunately, keeping your space clean and organized is easier than you might think. (幸运是,保持你的空间整洁有序比你想象的要容易得多。)”可知,接下来应该介绍保持空间整洁有序的方法,G项“Try to get rid of or throw away everything that you don't need to maximize your productivity (试着摆脱或扔掉所有你不需要的东西来最大化你的效率)”,G项承接了上文;下文“You’ll be amazed at the difference a clean workspace can make to your mindset and how much more you’ll be able to accomplish during the day. Zack joined our family two years ago. The first time I saw him in a caring center, he was sitting in a corner, lonely and nervous. When I got closer, he tried to avoid eye contact and forced a smile. I could read his struggles in his eyes. Indeed, Zack was different. He was a kid with inborn disorder that made it difficult to manage his anxiety. I gently put my arms around him. Unexpectedly, he responded by giving me a tighter hug. My heart melt. I couldn’t wait to drive Zack home immediately the adoption paper was done.
The life with us was new to Zack. Terrified of insects and always on alert(警戒的) for a storm rolling in, he remained housebound. One March afternoon, we held a family barbecue. Despite my best effort, Zack wouldn’t leave the house. I brought him a plate of food and he watched us from the window. I was upset that he couldn’t enjoy a few minutes of peace in the spring sun.
Anyway, Zack was a joy around, and we tried to meet all his special needs. We were worried that Zack was delayed at schoolwork and needed to attend a speech and language camp, but he refused to go.I begged, and finally bartered(交换).
“I’ll do it for a pet chicken,” he decided.
That’s when Valor, a hen with soft feathers, entered our lives in May. John, my husband, named her Valor, which meant “courage” in ancient English.
No one had expected how the chicken would make a difference, but it did. Once Valor arrived, Zack slowly began stepping out in order to be with her. In turn, we repaid her with treats of tomatoes and sunflower seeds. For some unknown reasons, Valor offered Zack peace and comfort and was content to keep him company wherever he went. To our excitement, Zack talked more and smiled often. He even turned to us with questions about raising pets, making John and me thrilled.

In September, another barbecue came with more new friends. My neighbor Mr. and Mrs. Smith brought their two sons, while my friend Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter brought their two daughters. Of course, we brought Zack, with his pet chicken Valor, to the barbecue in high spirits. Many friends who we hadn’t met before gathered together to participate in the barbecue. Everyone greeted each other with smiles on their faces. We got together with a few friends and we were ready to have barbecue.
When I suggested introducing our new friends, amazingly, Zack stood up. He said that he first wanted to introduce himself to everyone. Then he said loudly, “My name is Zack, and I’m glad to meet you. I used to have very few friends, maybe only this pet chicken. I want to make more friends, and I believe I can become good friends with you. Thank you!” What was even more surprising was that everyone applauded and cheered. This gave me great satisfaction, so I tightly held Zack in my arms and gave him a big hug.
