If you are finding it tough to land a job, try expanding your job-hunting plan to include the following strategies:

    Set your target

While you should always keep your opinions open to compromise (妥协), you should also be sure to target exactly what you want in a job. A specific job hunt will be more efficient than a random one.

    Schedule abundant interviews

Use every possible method to get interviews-answering ads, using search firms, contacting companies directly, surfing the Web, and networking. Even if a job is not perfect for you, every interview can make you learn from it.

    Follow up

Even if someone does not hire you, write them a thank-you note for the interview. Then. some weeks later, send another brief letter to explain that you still have not found the perfect position and that you will be available to interview again if the original position you applied for-or any other position, for that matter-is open. Do this with every position you interview for, and you may just catch a break.

    Make it your full-time job

You can’t find a job by looking infrequently. You have to make time for it. If you’re unemployed and looking for a job, devote as much time as you would to a full-time job. If you have a job while you’re looking, figure out an organized schedule to maximize your searching time.

    Network vertically

In the research phase of your job hunt, talk to people who are on a level above you in your desired industry. They’ll have some insights that people at your own level won’t have, and will be in a good position to hire you or recommend you to be hired.

    Keep your spirits up

Looking for a job is one of the toughest things you will ever have to do. Maintain your confidence, stay persistent, and think positively, and eventually you will get a job that suits you.

36According to the author, your job-hunting plan had better be as_____ as possible.

    Arandom Bclear

    Cfixed Dcomplex

37The “search firms” are most probably _______ .

Acompanies that have vacant posts available

    Bcompanies that supply website-search service

    Ccompanies that provide job-hunting service

Dcompanies that study job market and employment rate

38When hunting a job, you’d better communicate with people on a level above you because________.

    Athey will hire you soon

Bthey will ask someone to hire you

Cyou will benefit from their fame

    Dyou can learn from them

39As indicated in the passage, in order to get a suitable job, you should _______.

    Aalways keep an optimistic spirit

Bmainly focus on a full-time job

Capply for one job at one time

    Dfollow other people’s footsteps

40What is the best title for this passage?

    AInterview Strategies BInterview Ceremony

    CJob-hunting Experience DJob-hunting Strategies

If you’ve ever needed a sign to let you know you’re on the right path, Ben Lyne of Eagle Mountain, Utah, is here for you.

Ben Lyne has been jogging for years. However, last February, he decided to make things more meaningful on his morning runs. As he jogged along, he often saw the faces of people passing by in cars. Noticing how unhappy many people looked as they drove long hours to work, he decided to carry a sign that simply says, “I believe in you.”

At first, he wasn’t sure whether anyone would notice it. Then, messages started appearing on a website page of Eagle Mountain’s community. People were noticing and appreciating (感激) his encouragement.

“When I first saw Ben holding up his sign, I was driving to the University of Utah Neurosciences Center” said Jordan Smith. “I have a long history of health issues from brain cancer (癌症), several brain operations, and so on. That day I saw the sign Ben was holding up was just what I needed to get through my fears of seeing my doctor. I helped myself calm down and believe that everything would be OK.”

In fact, another man who spotted (发现) the sign while driving stopped to tell Ben the sign had saved his life. Last Saturday, this guy was just thinking about ending his life when he saw Ben with a sign in hand, which helped him out of it.

Ben now brings the sign with him everywhere he goes, even when he goes on vacation overseas. He hopes to spread his message of love and encouragement everywhere he goes!

Ben’s simple message of acceptance is changing lives, one run at a time! We hope his sign finds the people who need it most.

The piping plovers(千鸟)are already one of the most endangered birds in the Great Lakes area of the northern United States. Now, the rising water levels of Lake Michigan further threaten(威胁)the birds and the areas where they live.

The waters of Lake Michigan are now only a few meters from the plovers' sandy living area. Their home could be one storm away from being destroyed. Many sandy areas near the water are getting smaller, while others are underwater. The birds are forced to move closer to places with trees and bushes, or even to city areas.

Water levels on the Great Lakes are reaching some of their highest points since the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began keeping records 101 years ago. Streets, businesses and houses in the area have flooded, the Associated PressAPreports. Vince Cavalieri works with the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He told the AP that the high water levels put plovers in more danger than most other bird groups. That is because the areas where they live have been disappearing. He added that some nests on the Canadian side of the Great Lakes also have been swept away.

The Great Lakes generally rise with the melting snow and rainstorms of spring, and fall during the drier summer months. However, some scientists believe climate change is causing more changes in water levels. If that is true, the piping plovers could be at greater risk. Their numbers have already dropped because of coastal development. The government lists the birds as threatened in the northern Great Plains and along the Atlantic coast. Rising sea levels there threaten their wintering grounds.

Recovery projects are helping, however. In 2017, officials counted 76 pairs of plovers. Vince Cavalieri expects to see more numbers this year. Most of this year's plover eggs will hatch(孵化)by the end of June. If more storms do not wash away nests, a new group of plovers may survive.

46What do we know about the piping plovers from Paragraph 2?

AThey are forced to live in cities.

BThey build nests in trees and bushes.

CTheir living environment is badly polluted.

DTheir homes could be easily destroyed by storms.

47What is Vince Cavalieri worried about?

AA lot of houses have been flooded.

BMany factories have been swept away.

CPlenty of piping plovers may lose their nests.

DHe cannot provide enough service for people.

48In which season do the Great Lakes rise according to the text?

    ASpring. BSummer.

    CAutumn. DWinter.

49What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

AThere will be more snow in winter.

BMore rainstorms will happen in summer.

CThe government has taken measures to protect birds.

DWater levels may change because of climate change.

50What is the text mainly about?

    APiping plovers' living habits.

    BPiping plovers in great danger.

    CGreat Lakes getting smaller.

    DClimate change causing storms.

In 1910, the Los Angeles Times ran a story about a boy who was charged with opening a valve (阀门) on a water pump powered by a steam engine to release the built-up pressure. His whole job consisted of staring at these machines all day, which was incredibly boring. The “ lazy ” boy then invented a release for the pump to run just as it should and won his freedom. The first automatic steam engine was born.

This story may be fictional, but the boy’s behavior reflects a deeper truth. When we are feeling lazy, we often search for an easier way, trying to update the process and save time and effort. In other words, laziness can drive innovation.

In recent years, some psychologists and business leaders have wised up to this insight, changing our perspective of what laziness really means. Both Bill Gates and Walter Chrysler have been credited with a quote: “ I always choose a lazy person to do a hard job because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it. ”

Our brains are born for laziness. Compared with our ancestors who had to conserve energy to compete for food, flee from predators, and fight, we now don’t take survival as a daily issue. It seems natural that we would choose to be “lazier” , but the opposite has occurred. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Americans sleep less and work more than we used to; productivity per worker has gone up 400 percent since 1950. Our culture teaches us that our worth depends on how industrious we are, so we work even harder to produce even more.

But there’s one big paradox (悖论), sad but true: The harder we work, the less productive we are. When demand increases, we tend to push harder. Yet the trouble is that, without any refresh and recharge, we are less efficient, make more mistakes, and get less engaged with what we’re doing.

Therefore, how can we make our labor more meaningful and our lives more fulfilling? Current research in psychology and neuroscience points to a new understanding of the value of the wandering mind. Taking breaks and allowing your thoughts to drift can help your brain retain information, refocus, and gain fresh perspective.

Here’s the core problem: When the time finally comes to put our feet up, we often don’t know how. We have little training in how to be idle. But at least give it a shot. Maybe this week, notice some downtime in your day, some white space in your calendar. Instead of filling the space with more work, just sit in the sofa, and be, in the words of poet Mary Oliver, “ idle and blessed. ”

51The author tells the story in paragraph 1 to prove ______.

Athe kid needs punishing Bboredom enhances productivity

Ccreativity contributes to laziness Dlaziness inspires new ideas

52How did the author support his opinion in the third paragraph?

ABy listing some numbers of being lazy.

BBy quoting some great figures’ words.

CBy making a comparison between two great figures.

DBy giving examples of how to be creative.

53What can we infer from paragraph 4?

APeople nowadays don’t have to face poverty. BModern society honors creativity.

CAmericans lives a poorer life than before. DAncestors consider industry as a value.

54Which of the following idea will the author probably agree with?

    AWorking 24 -7 with a tight schedule.

BTaking three part-time jobs to fill weekends.

CWatching a stand-up comedy after a busy weekday.

DAttending a formal dinner with business purpose.

55The author writes this passage to ______.

Acompare the previous understanding of idleness to the new

Bpersuade people to give up the value of hard work

Ccriticize the irresponsible attitude towards life

Dencourage people to keep refreshed for better work and life

    II

    (本卷共6小题,共35分)

    第三部分:写作

    第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

    阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

Every child has a dream of what they want to be, right? When Renee Butts was little, her dream was to become a volunteer firefighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her beloved father passed away and she was unable to do volunteer work with him. However, she was determined and never gave up, which makes for a good firefighter.

Now Renee is a member of the Carmel Fire Department, where she is required to be an Emergency Medical Technician. She should also be ready to deal with any emergency, like fighting a fire, dealing with a car accident or helping someone who’s sick. Sometimes she is in the driver’s seat or using the water pump. Renec works nine to eleven days a month on 24-hour shifts. She also has a family to care for, as her husband is also a busy firefighter. Dealing with housework and working so much can show her great determination.

When I asked Renee what the best part of her job is, she replied, “Helping people and the satisfaction of saving lives.” I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She’s always willing to do anything for anyone in need. Renee says that her job is frightening at times, but extremely exciting. “The worst part of my job is that I see death. Actually, sometimes, people die in the accident, for which I was very sorry,” said Renee.

I was inspired by this because I know I would be very scared to do her job and don’t know if I could handle seeing people die. With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women, but that doesn’t bother her. She says everyone gets a fair shot and they all do the same jobs.

We would never live without people like her who have the courage to risk their lives. Renee’s determination rubs off on me and helps me believe that I can do anything.

56What’s Renee’s job in the Carmel Fire Department? (No more than 5 words)

57What makes Renee balance between doing housework and working so much? (No more than 5 words)

58Why does the author-think Renee Butts is a true hero? (No more than 15 words)

59How do you understand the underlined part in Paragraph 4?(No more than 5 words)

60What do you think of Renee? Please give your reasons. (No more than 25 words)
