A recent study found that experiencing or even just anticipating uplifting events in daily life was related to feeling less depressed that same day. The study, conducted by Professor Lisa Starr at University of Rochester, found that a decrease in depression was especially marked when the experience included interpersonal uplifts, such as participating in fun activities with friends or family.
A number of laboratory-based studies suggest that the mood of people with depression is relatively unresponsive to positive stimuli(刺激物). In other words, when people with depression experience a positive event in the laboratory—like receiving a financial reward—their mood is unlikely to improve markedly. The issue here is that laboratory research doesn’t always translate to real-life settings.
The Rochester study is one of a growing number of studies examining how real life events with direct relevance to study participants affect their mood. The authors wanted to know if people with different levels of depression felt better when good things happened to them. The answer is simple—yes. The same is true for the expectation of good things to come.
The study included 157 young adults of whom two-thirds had mild, moderate, or severe depressive symptoms. The remaining third had no symptoms, allowing the authors to examine whether the level of depressive symptoms changes the way people respond to positive experiences. The study subjects completed a two-week online diary, tracking their mood as it related to recent and anticipated positive events in their lives—like time spent with friends, or exercising.
Those who reported higher levels of depressive symptoms at the beginning of the study, showed stronger associations between daily uplifts and lower daily depressive symptoms, particularly when the uplifts were interpersonal in nature.
“The findings have really important implications for treatment and are compatible with a treatment model called Behavioral Activation, which suggests that if you can help depressed people to engage in positive experiences—despite their low motivation to do so—their mood may improve,” says Starr. In other words: If you’re feeling seriously blue, make an effort to do something fun with friends.
41.What did the new study find?
A.Sociable people are less likely to experience depression.
B.People with depression are good at predicting the future.
C.Every one of us experiences depression from time to time.
D.Positive social activities can reduce people’s depressive mood.
42.What can we learn about the positive stimuli of the Rochester study?
    A.They produced little effect. B.They were laboratory-based.
C.They were financial rewards. D.They were related to real-life events.
43.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.How the study was conducted. B.What the result of the study is.
C.What affects participants’ mood. D.How long the study took.
44.Which participants’ mood was most responsive to daily uplifts?
    A.Those with no depressive symptoms.
    B.Those with mild depressive symptoms.
    C.Those with severe depressive symptoms.
    D.Those with moderate depressive symptoms.
45.What does the underlined word “compatible” in the last paragraph mean?
    A.Unrelated. B.Consistent. C.Comfortable. D.Popular.

For Mao Zhongwu, who was paralyzed (瘫痪) from the waist down in an accidental fall 16 years ago, sports have opened up a new world. The 37-year-old cross-country “sit-skier” collected one gold and two silver medals at the Beijing Winter Paralympic Games — in men’s middle-distance, men’s sprint (短距离) and men’s long distance, respectively. “It was sports that made me come out of the lowest point in my life and changed me physically, mentally and spiritually,” Mao said.
Born and raised in Dalian, Liaoning province, Mao has been fond of sports since childhood. The accident changed everything. Paralysis ended his functional independence. He had to live under his mother’s care. For a long time, he felt ashamed and was unwilling to go out. In 2017, persuaded by his mother, he started to learn table tennis. Ten days later, he took part in a citywide competition and performed well.
Fan Yi, a coach from the sports department of Dalian’s service center for the disabled, picked Mao and brought him to the wheelchair racing team. Fan recalled that in the beginning Mao didn’t dare to talk with other people. But he gradually became cheerful and confident in training. Three years ago, Mao shifted to train for cross-country skiing. “As an older athlete, he recovers slowly. He persevered through willpower,” Fan said.
Mao said that when he decided to be a professional athlete, he told himself there was no turning back. “I have experienced the bitterness of life, and I know this is a rare opportunity that I must seize,” he said. Everyone’s body has its limits. When he was suffering through the period of tiredness caused by overtraining, he thought he was too old to compete in the Olympics. “But I never gave up. With the support of my team, I stepped toward my goals one by one,” he said. “Although I’m not young now, I will keep training and eye on more gold medals as long as I can.”

First the robots came for our jobs. Now they’re coming for our hobbies. Google’s DeepMind AI lab has been busy the past few years, creating programs to take on human players across a variety of games. In 2016 its AlphaGo beat the best Go player in the world. Earlier this year, its Alpha Star defeated two middle-tier players at the popular online game StarCraft II. Now it’s learning to win at multiplayer games.
“Artificially intelligent agents are getting better and better at two-player games, but most real-world endeavors require teamwork,” DeepMind’s researchers wrote in a paper published in Science in June.
To be sure, computers have been proving their dominance (优越) over humans in one-on-one turn-based games such as chess ever since IBM’s Deep Blue beat Russian chess master Garry Kasparov in 1997.
However, successfully using teamwork to win in multiplayer games with complex environments was difficult to achieve.
For this purpose, DeepMind’s researchers designed AI agents that taught themselves how to play first-person game Quake III Arena. The team, led by Max Jaderberg, worked on a modified (修改的) version of Quake III Arena.
The game mode they chose was “Capture (抢) the Flag”. All the players must work together to steal the other team’s flag while safeguarding their own.
The AI agents “trained” with 12 hours of game data, then matched up against professional game testers. The AI won 75 percent of the time, even when its reaction time artificially slowed down to human levels and when their aiming ability was similarly reduced.
And in order to make improvements, the programmers used various kinds of “rewards” to help the AI players weigh their goals and actions to help them cooperate in the teamwork. They also used randomized maps for each new match.
“That meant the solutions that the agents find have to be general –– they cannot just memorize a sequence (系列) of actions,” said co-author Wojciech Czarnecki.
The only time humans were able to beat the AI agents was when they teamed up together. A team consisting of one human and one AI agent had a five percent greater win probability than a team of just AI agents.
Ethan Gach said at the video game news website Kotaku, “It suggests that the AI program is able to adapt to playing with non-AI teammates.” In the near future, AI may cooperate with human beings in some other fields, such as medicine and other branches of science.
51.What might be the most difficult task for AI agents in multiplayer games?
    A.Understanding the rules.
    B.Cooperating with other players.
    C.Memorizing complex actions.
    D.Increasing reaction speed.
52.How did the researchers of Google’s DeepMind train AI agents?
A.They gave various “punishments” when AI agents lost the games.
B.They made AI agents team up with non-professional human players.
C.They limited the time for AI agents to complete difficult tasks.
D.They put them through thousands of games with different situations.
53.What does Gach mean in the last paragraph?
A.AI players perform better than humans in a team game.
B.AI programs should be offered more game data.
C.AI players are able to do well with human players.
D.AI programs have been successfully applied in the field of medicine.
54.The underlined word “randomized” in Paragraph 8 can be understood as________.
    A.generalized B.specialized C.updated D.memorized
55.What’s the best title of this passage?
A.Researches on DeepMind AI B.Training AI Agents
C.Teaming up with AI D.AI Competing with Human Beings
    【答案】51.B    52.D    53.C    54.A    55.C
根据第四段中的“However, successfully using teamwork to win in multiplayer games with complex environments was difficult to achieve.(然而,在复杂环境的多人游戏中成功利用团队合作获胜是很困难的。)”
根据第七段中的“The AI agents “trained” with 12 hours of game data, then matched up against professional game testers.(AI代理使用12小时的游戏数据 进行“训练”,然后与专业游戏测试人员进行匹配。)”以及第八段中的“And in order to make improvements, the programmers used various kinds of “rewards” to help the AI players weigh their goals and actions to help them cooperate in the teamwork.(而为了做出改进,程序员们用各种“奖励”来帮助AI玩家权衡他们的目标和行动,帮助他们在团队合作中合作。)”
根据尾段中的“Ethan Gach said at the video game news website Kotaku,“It suggests that the AI program is able to adapt to playing with non-AI teammates.”(Ethan Gach在视频游戏新闻网站Kotaku上说,“这表明AI程序能够适应与非AI队友一起玩。”)”
根据倒数第四段中的“And in order to make improvements, the programmers used various kinds of “rewards” to help the AI players weigh their goals and actions to help them cooperate in the teamwork.(而为了做出改进,程序员们用各种“奖励”来帮助AI玩家权衡他们的目标和行动,帮助他们在团队合作中合作。)” 可知,他们也使用新比赛的各种地形图来训练人工智能的团队合作,再根据第四段“However, successfully using teamwork to win in multiplayer games with complex environments was difficult to achieve.(然而,在复杂环境的多人游戏中成功利用团队合作获胜是很困难的。)” 故选A项。
根据第二段““Artificially intelligent agents are getting better and better at two-player games, but most real-world endeavors require teamwork,” DeepMind’s researchers wrote in a paper published in Science in June.(“人工智能代理在双人游戏中越来越好,但大多数现实世界的努力都需要团队合作,”DeepMind的研究人员在六月发表在《科学》杂志上的一篇论文中写道。)”
When I was eight or nine years old, I wrote my first poem. My mother read the little poem and began to cry. “Buddy, you didn’t really write this beautiful, beautiful poem!”
Shyly, proud-bursting, I stammered that I had. She poured out her praise. Why, this poem was nothing short of genius! I glowed.
I spent the best part of that afternoon preparing for the arrival of my father. But he did not return until an hour late for dinner. “Ben, a beautiful thing has happened,” my mother began. “Buddy has written his first poem! And it’s beautiful, absolutely amazing.”
“If you don’t mind, I’d like to decide that for myself,” Father said.
That poem was only ten lines. But it seemed to take hours. I could hear my father breathing. “I think it’s lousy,” my father said.
“Ben, these are the first lines of poetry he’s ever written,” my mother was saying. “He needs encouragement.”
They quarreled over it. I couldn’t stand it another second. I ran from the dinning room bawling.
Up in my room I threw myself on the bed and sobbed.
A few years later I took a second look at that first poem; it was a pretty lousy poem. But it wasn’t until years later that the true meaning of that painful “first poem” experience dawned on me. As I became a professional writer, it became clearer and clearer to me how fortunate I had been. I had a mother who said, “Buddy, did you really write this? I think it’s wonderful!” and a father who shook his head no and drove me to tears with “I think it’s lousy.” A writer — in fact every one of us in life — needs that loving-mother force from which all creation flows; and yet alone it is incomplete, even misleading, finally destructive, without the father force to caution, “Watch. Listen. Review. Improve.”
56.How do you understand the underlined part in Paragraph 2?(no more than 8 words )
    _________________________________________________________________
57.Why did the writer’s parents quarrel at dinner?(no more than 10 words )

56.This poem was well-done./This poem was the same work of genius./This poem was almost wonderful/excellent.
57.Because they had different attitude towards the poem./Because they had different opinions about the poem.
58.It was lousy./It was very bad./It was a pretty lousy poem.
59.Everyone needs a loving mother and a strict father.
60.I need a mother who can encourage me and a father who can caution me. /I need parents who both love me./I need parents who always encourage me.
根据第一段中的“My mother read the little poem and began to cry. ‘Buddy, you didn’t really write this beautiful, beautiful poem!’(母亲读了这首小诗,哭了起来。“伙计,你不会真的写了这首非常非常漂亮的诗吧!”)”可知,母亲表扬作者的诗歌写的很好,第二段中的“Shyly, proud-bursting, I stammered that I had. She poured out her praise.( 我羞涩地,骄傲地,结结巴巴地说是我。她倾吐她的赞美之词。)”可知,作者听到母亲对诗歌的赞美之词感到非常的高兴,由此可推断,划线句子的意思是对作者诗歌的赞美。故答案为This poem was well-done./This poem was the same work of genius./This poem was almost wonderful/excellent.。
根据第五段中的“That poem was only ten lines. But it seemed to take hours. I could hear my father breathing. ‘I think it’s lousy,’ my father said.( 那首诗只有十行。但这似乎要花好几个小时。我能听到父亲的呼吸声。“我觉得很糟糕,”父亲说。)”可知,父亲对作者写的诗歌并不满意,结合第三段中的“‘Ben, a beautiful thing has happened,’ my mother began. ‘Buddy has written his first poem! And it’s beautiful, absolutely amazing.’(“本,一件美好的事情发生了,”我妈妈开始说。“巴迪写了他的第一首诗!它很美,绝对令人惊叹。”)”可知,母亲认为作者写的是个很精彩,由此可以推断,父母两人吵架是因为他们的观点不一致。故答案是Because they had different attitude towards the poem./Because they had different opinions about the poem.。
根据最后一段中的“A few years later I took a second look at that first poem; it was a pretty lousy poem.(几年后,我重新审视了那首诗;这是一首非常糟糕的诗。)” It was lousy./ It was very bad. /It was a pretty lousy poem.。
根据最后一段中的“A writer — in fact every one of us in life — needs that loving-mother force from which all creation flows; and yet alone it is incomplete, even misleading, finally destructive, without the father force to caution, “Watch. Listen. Review. Improve.”(一个作家——实际上是生活中的每一个人——都需要那种慈母般的力量,所有的创作都源自这种力量;然而,如果没有父亲的告诫,它是不完整的,甚至是误导的,最终是毁灭性的,“观察、倾听、审查、改善。”)”可知,作者认为生活中的每一个人只有一个爱自己的母亲是不完美的,还需要一个严厉的父亲才能让自己不断的进步,所以最后一段主要阐述的是人人都需要一位慈母和一位严父。故答案是Everyone needs a loving mother and a strict father.。
根据介绍的作者的写的第一首诗歌的经历以及最后一段中的“A writer—in fact every one of us in life—needs that loving-mother force from which all creation flows; and yet alone it is incomplete, even misleading, finally destructive, without the father force to caution, “Watch. Listen. Review. I need a mother who can encourage me and a father who can caution me. /I need parents who both love me. /I need parents who always encourage me.。

    Text 1
W: Good morning, this is Marry from No. 1 Middle School. Is Mr. Martin there?
M: No, he is out to lunch. I’ll be glad to take a message.
    Text 2
W: Tens of thousands of Africans are studying in China.
    M: Oh, yes?
W: The country provides students with financial assistance for education to develop skills that Africa needs most.
M: Wish them to use their knowledge to serve their countries in the future.
    Text 3
W: Are you working flexible hours?
M: No, I’m not. The weather today is so nice, so I decided to walk to work, and that meant I had to leave an hour earlier than usual.
    Text 4
W: Hey, do you think technological development may threaten your job, especially the driverless cars reported recently?
M: Well, driverless cars may be safer, but it will take away the fun of driving.
    Text 5
M: The shuttle bus is running behind schedule. Maybe we won’t make the 7:30 show.
W: Okay. Let’s try to get there on foot. And if we don’t make it, we’ll just have dinner near the theatre.
    Text 6
W: Have you decided where you want to go for vacation?
M: I want to go to Japan and China for our vacation. Two weeks in China and one week in Japan.
W: That’s a great idea, but do you have enough paid time off for that period of time?
M: Of course, I do. Even if I didn’t, I’d take a few days’ leave without pay.
W: OK. Then, what’s your schedule?
M: We start in Beijing and then go along the coast to Qingdao, Shanghai, Xiamen and end in Hong Kong. After spending a couple of days there, we will then go to Japan. We’d start in Hiroshima and end up in Tokyo or maybe Hokkaido.
W: Wow, it sounds you will enjoy a meaningful and wonderful holiday.
    Text 7
M: Well, I started learning Chinese a long time ago. First I learned a little bit when I was in college. But I probably picked up most of it when I was overseas in Beijing.
W: Did you meet any difficulties in your learning?
M: Yes, a lot. Grammar and vocabulary are not easy for foreigners like me. But two of the most challenging things when you study Chinese are the tones and the characters. Writing Chinese characters is like drawing pictures. As a Chinese character with square structure, its “form”, “sound” and “meaning” form a close combination, but the relationship between the three is relatively complex. I think that’s just extremely difficult. And it was frustrating to be teaching...teaching kindergarten students and realizing that their reading was much better than mine.
W: Of course they were. They have been exposed to Chinese for so many years.
    Text 8
W: Hey, John. Can I talk to you for a minute?
    M: Sure, what’s up?
W: I wanted to let you know about a book club I joined a few months ago. I know you do a lot of reading, so I thought you might want to come with me next month.
M: Oh, that sounds like fun. When does the group meet?
W: Usually the last Saturday of the month at 7:30 in the evening. Is that too late for you?
M: No, I think that’s okay. What do you talk about in the group?
W: Well, every month we choose a new book. And then during the next meeting, we discuss it.
M: What books have you read?
W: Quite a lot. Recently we have read The Beautiful Mind, Paper Towns and The Great Gatsby. Now we are reading The Kite Runner.
M: The Kite Runner? I’ve heard that’s a good book. What is it about?
W: It’s a story about a boy who grows up in Afghanistan during the 1980s and struggles to find his place in the world because of the results of a series of extremely unpleasant childhood events.
M: That sounds interesting. I’d love to come.
W: Great! The next meeting will be held in two weeks, so you still have time to read the book.
    M: OK.
    Text 9
W: Good evening! Welcome back to Fresh Air on National Public Radio. Our program brings you news about important topics and art forms around the world. I’m your host Terry Gross. With me tonight is Mr. Gavin MacGregor. Mr. MacGregor, will you tell us a little about what you do?
M: Sure, Terry. I work for National Geographic magazine. My job takes me all over the world.
W: Are you a photographer or a writer?
M: Actually, I used to be a photographer. But for the past five years, I’ve worked on a special project called NOVICA. We help people sell their handwork products. My role is to find people who make unique and well-made items. Right now, we have 4000 artists working with us.
W: And how does National Geographic help them?
M: Through the NOVICA program, artists can sell their handwork products directly to other people throughout the world on our website. This way, they can get a fair price and reach a bigger market. Production is usually done in the artists’ own homes.
W: That sounds amazing! What kind of handwork products are available, Mr. MacGregor?
M: Well, for example… I just got back from a trip to Peru. I was able to convince a young mother who makes beautiful clothing to try out our program. And in three days, I’m off to Fiji to talk to a man who makes silver jewelry with traditional designs. The program is intended to preserve cultural traditions and help people make a better living with their art.
    Text 10
W: Good morning. I’m very pleased to have this opportunity to say a little about an exciting new development in the city: the Brackenside Open-Air Swimming Pool. As many of the older members of the audience will remember, there used to be a wonderful open-air pool on the sea front 30 years ago but it had to close when it was judged to be unsafe. For the design of this new heated pool, we were very happy to secure the talents of internationally famous architect Ellen Wendon, who has managed to combine a charming 1930s design, which fits in so well with many of the other buildings in the area, with up-to-the-minute features such as a recycling system.
Now, there has been quite a bit of discussion in the local press about whether there would be enough room for the number of visitors we’re hoping to attract. We’re on schedule for a June 15th opening date and well within budget. We hope that as many people as possible will be there on June 15th. We have engaged award-winning actress Coral White to declare the pool open and there’ll be drinks and snacks available at the pool side. There’ll also be a competition for the public to decide on the sculpture we plan to have at the entrance: you will decide which famous historical figure from the city we should have.
