On Thursday, Frank’s teacher stayed at home because she didn’t feel well. Another teacher called the students’ names one by one. “Francis... is there a Francis Smith here?” he asked.
Of course Frank knew his name was Francis and that Frank was just his nick name. His parents called him Frank, and all his friends did, too. Bobby, though, who was new in school, shouted to the whole class that Francis was a girl’s name!
When they had a break, Bobby made fun of Frank. “Francis is a girl’s name, Francis is a girl’s name,” he called.
Frank didn’t care what Bobby thought, but he didn’t like to be made fun of. He was a little sad.
Their teacher, who was back at school, told Bobby to apologize (道歉). And then the teacher had an idea. The students would present reports about their first names.
At the library that afternoon, Frank was surprised at that many famous people had the name Francis. There was a young man from Italy who gave up his family’s money 800 years ago. He went on to become Saint Francis, who was famous for talking to animals. There was a famous explorer named Sir Francis Drake. He sailed around the world more than 400 years ago! There were many kings named Francis, too.
Over the weekend, Frank asked his mother about his name. His mother explained that Francis with an “i” was usually a boy’s name. Frances with an “e” was usually a girl’s name. And Frank’s mother said something else about his name.
“Did you know you were named after a hero?” she asked. Then she told a story, “Long you’re your great-great-great-grandmother’s ship sank (下沉). She was just a kid, but she caught a piece of wood and swam five miles to shore (海岸) while holding on to her little brother. Finally she saved his life. Her name was Frances Hightower.”
Francis might not be a girl’s name, but he was named after a girl—an awesome girl!
On Monday, Frank told the story of his name in class. He talked about the saint, the kings and the famous explorer. Then he said he was named after his great-great-great-grandmother, the hero.
When he finished the story about Frances Hightower, the whole class clapped.
From then on, _______ . He liked the two names, one of them from a real hero. It made him want to be heroic, even if that just meant being kind or helping a dog.
From then on, whenever he did heroic actions or even had heroic thoughts, Frank signed his own name as Francis... a perfectly good name.

42.What’s the best title for the passage?
    A.A Hero’s Name. B.A Real Hero. C.A Small Mistake. D.A Famous Explorer.
43.The underlined word “awesome” probably means “_________”.
    A.amazing B.careful C.friendly D.confident
44.Which of the following can be put in _________ ?
A.everyone wanted to be his friend
    B.Frank’s friends changed their names
C.Bobby still liked to laugh at Frank
    D.Frank’s classmates called him Francis
45.What can we learn from the story above?
A.With knowledge, we can change our future.

Firstly, try to remember 2 or 3 characters a day and review them as often as you can. And I will choose some online story books to help you learn new characters.
Secondly, it’s quite normal if we only practice our handwriting from time to time. So guess what, I’ve already ordered some online lessons to improve your handwriting.
Finally, it is necessary to practice speaking Chinese every day. “Practice makes perfect!” always works. How about chatting online with me? I’m sure your pronunciation will be improved a lot.

    Dear Ronan,
It’s glad to hear from you again. Chinese is one of the most difficult languages in the world, so it’s common to have such learning problems. But don’t worry too much! Here I am to help you with your Chinese learning.
To begin with, Chinese characters have some features in common. Therefore, it’s useful to put the words which look similar together and try to find the rules behind them. Besides, writing beautifully is as essential as memorizing, so how about writing down the words you’ve learnt for several times daily? Furthermore, due to the difference between how we pronounce English and Chinese, speaking a new language smoothly takes time. I believe talking with me in Chinese is a helpful and interesting way.
Hope you can achieve your goal finally. (140 words)
    Yours,
    Li Hua
    Possible version 3:                                                        Zhang Shibei
    Dear Ronan,
I’m very glad to receive your letter. Learning Chinese is not difficult if you use correct methods. Here are some suggestions for you.
To begin with, reading some Chinese newspapers and magazines is beneficial to your reading ability. You will learn more Chinese characters in this way. Additionally, it’s a good idea to practice listening and speaking regularly by watching Chinese movies and talking with local people. What’s more, remember to keep writing if you can, which is an excellent chance to improve your handwriting. Lastly, don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Learning a new language takes time and effort, but it’s worthy in the end.
I hope the advice will be helpful. Looking forward to your reply. (128 words)
    Yours,
