The number of accidents involving pedestrians (行人) wearing headphones is on the rise, a report suggests, causing fresh warning from road safety groups in Britain.

A US-based study found a total of 116 reports of death or injury to pedestrians wearing headphones between 2004 and 2011, jumping from 16 in 2005 to 47 in 2011.

Most victims were men (68%) and under the age of 30 (67%), with around one in ten of all cases (9%) under the age of 18.Some 89% of the cases occurred in urban areas and more than half (55%) of the victims were struck by trains .

Eighty-one of the 116 accidents (70%) resulted in the person’s death—even though a warning was sounded in around a third of the cases.

The study concluded, “The use of headphone may be a safety risk to pedestrians , especially in environments with moving vehiclescars. Further research is needed to determine if and how headphone use threatens pedestrian safety.” British road safety groups warned pedestrians to be careful.

Floor Lieshout, director of Youth For Road Safety, said, “ This study shows once more the importance of using all of our senses while we are near traffic. It is important that we find an attractive way to make youth learn about the risks of wearing headphones in traffic.”

Andrew Howard , who is the head of road safety at the Automobile Association, added that some pedestrians can be “so focused in their own little world they forget the world going on around them”.That can include headphone wearers, Howard said, but also people talking on phones.

However, Howard said that more researches needed to be done.

Earlier studies have shown that people wearing headphones or talking on phones can suffer “inattentional blindness” which makes them isolated (孤立) from the world around them .

Ian Harvey, at the charity Civic Voice, said that “ to defeat isolation and to help build a civic(文明的) society, people need to interact(交往) with each other .

He said, “ A basis for any civilized society is communication—Surfing the web, listening to MP3s, reading blogs or sending e-mail is not interacting with a person; it’s interacting with a machine.

“If people feel socially isolated, they need to have more face-to-face interactions with other human beings and in time, will begin to feel happier and more connected to the world and place they live in.”

    4. What does the text mainly discuss?

    A. Safety problems caused by wearing headphones.

    B. Recent research on the risks to pedestrians .

    C. The advantages and disadvantages of headphones.

    D. Traffic accidents in the United States.

On average, Americans spend about 10 hours a day in front of a computer or other electronic devices and less than 30 minutes a day outdoors. That is a claim made by David Strayer, a professor of psychology at the University of Utah. In his 2017 TED Talk , Strayer explained that all this time spent with technology is making our brains tired.

Using an electronic device to answer emails, listen to the news and look at Facebook puts a lot of pressure on the front of the brain, which, Strayer explains, is important for critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making.

So it is important to give the brain a rest. And being in nature, Strayer claims , helps get a tired brain away from too much technology. More than 15,000 campers from around the world attended an international camping festival in September. That is when friends and family take time off and escape to nature for several days. They take walks, climb, explore, swim, sleep, eat and play. Camping may be just what a tired brain needs.

Take Carl for example. He lives in West Virginia and enjoys camping. He says that staying outdoors makes him feel at ease. It also prepares him for the work he must do. Kate Somers is another example who also lives in West Virginia. She says she enjoys camping with her husband and two children. She calls it a “regenerative” experience.

At the University of Utah, David Strayer has studied both short-term and long-term exposure to nature. He found that spending short amounts of time in nature without technology does calm the brain and helps it to remember better. However, he found it is the long-term contact with nature that does the most good. He and his research team found spending three days in nature without any technology is enough time for the brain to fully relax and reset itself.

    12. What is David Strayer’s opinion?

    A. Americans dislike outdoor activities.   B. Electronic equipment should be quitted.

    C. New technologies are a double-edged sword. D. Electronic equipment brings great convenience.

    13. Why does Strayer insist we go outdoors?

    A. To refresh our brain   B. To try another lifestyle

C To make better decisions.      D. To play with our family and friends

    14. What does the underlined word “regenerative” mean?

    A. Exhausting   B. Ridiculous   C. Relevant.   D. Reborn

    15. Which is the proper title for the passage?

    A. How to Use New Technologies.    B. Good Rest Develops Good Memory.

    C. Being in Nature Is Good for the Brain.   D. Electronic Equipment Harms the Brain.
