(2022秋·江苏南京·高一南京市第九中学校考期中)Rollins College’s graduate, Elizabeth Bonker gave a powerful speech at the school’s graduation ceremony using text-to-speech technology. “You have a voice. Use it,” she advised graduates. It seems funny that a non-speaking autistic (孤独症患者) encourages you to use your voice. However, her moving speech touched not only her fellow classmates but also the worldwide audience with a powerful message of hope.
Throughout her academic career, Elizabeth has studied hard to reach her goals at school and in life. She wrote a book, I Am in Here, which highlights the abilities of people like her with non-speaking autism. She also founded a non-profit organization called Communication 4 All.
Elizabeth has a form of autism that resulted in her losing the ability to speak when she was 15 months old. After she lost her speech her family helped her learn to communicate by typing. She has become a supporter of assistive communication and typing instruction for those with non-speaking autism.
“I have typed this speech with one finger with a communication partner holding a keyboard,” shared Elizabeth. She gave her persuasive speech through text-to-speech technology.
Elizabeth majored in social service with the purpose of helping the 31 million people in the world who have non-speaking autism. She strongly believes that service to others gives meaning to each individual and to those they serve.
Throughout her life, Elizabeth has sought a platform where others would hear and accept her. She ignored negative comments and the low expectations others had for her life. Instead, she walked down her own path and set out to realize her dreams using intellect, talent and determination. She encouraged her fellow classmates to use their education and the power of their own minds to help make their dream a reality.

(2022秋·江苏·高一江苏省新海高级中学校考期中)Last Monday, I visited Jalan Besar to find a new fan blade (扇叶) for a standing fan that my daughters had broken.
I’d worked in the Jalan Besar area 30 years ago and remembered that there were lots of small hardware(五金制品) shops selling unusual things so I thought that I woud have no problem finding a fan blade. However, after walking around for almost an hour, I found out that these shops were no longer around.
When I was ready to give up and go home, I spotted an old-fashioned hardware store. After being greeted by a woman, I explained my predicament. She immediately asked me to show her the broken blade. Out of nowhere, a man who looked to be in his 60s came out.
He asked to see the blade and then disappeared into the shop. He came back with a blade but it did not look the same as what I had in my hand. We compared the two blades and he said that it might work.
I asked him how much it was.
He told me that he had taken the blade off an old fan that someone had brought in for repair.
He said: “It didn’t cost me anything, so why should I charge you for it? ”
That really touched me. I took the blade home and it work perfectly! My daughters got a “new” fan for nothing.
When I told them this story, they were shocked as they are used to patronizing (经常光顾) big modern shops where everything is transactional (交易型的) and the employees go strictly by the book. Not so much my wife. She is almost in her 60s, and said this reminded her of the kind aunties and uncles who used to run small shops and were always ready to help others when she was growing up.
5.Why did the author go to Jalan Besar?
    A.To visit some old friends.
B.To buy a new standing fan.

    A.Potential risk. B.Basic principle.
    C.Contact information. D.Difficult situation.
7.Which of the following can best describe the old man?
A.Kind and brave. B.Honest and helpful.
C.Hard - working and curious. D.Easy - going and humorous.
8.How did the author’s wife react to his experience?
    A.She thought little of it.
    B.She was greatly surprised.
C.She remembered the good old days.
D.She thought it was too good to be true.

(2022秋·江苏镇江·高一统考期中)Agassi was very emotional at the end of his final game. On September 3, the American tennis player said a tearful goodbye to his 21-year career after a third-round defeat in the US Open. The 36-year-old tried his best, but was unable to keep up with German Benjamin Becker, more than ten years his junior.
“The scoreboard said I lost today, but what the scoreboard doesn’t say is what I’ve found,” Agassi said to the fans. “I have found inspiration and you willed me to succeed.” It was an emotional speech at the end of a long career. Agassi hated tennis as a teenager as much as he loves it now. His father made him play when he was a child. He got bored, and became a rebel (叛逆者). The strict training that his father pushed upon him got in the way of his wild lifestyle. He grew hair long, wore colorful clothes and spat (吐口水) at an umpire (裁判). Over the years, he has made bad jokes during news conferences.
Asked what he would say to his 17-year-old self, Agassi answered, “I would say, I understand you a lot more than I want to be you.”
The turning point in Agassi’s career came in 1992 when he unexpectedly won his first Grand Slam (大满贯赛事) at Wimbledon. It was the first time Agassi understood what real champions finally understand: “winning is a test of nerves and not just power; it’s a marathon, not a sprint (短跑)”.
And a marathon Agassi was about to begin. He cut his long hair, got fitter and tightened up emotionally. On the court, he was ranked No. 1 for almost two years. His lowest point came in 1997 when his ranking dropped to No. 141. He didn’t quit though. “I knew that I would try to get the most out of myself every day from that day forward. That was my promise,” he said. “That never stopped.”
9.Why was Agassi very emotional when saying goodbye to his career?
A.Because he lost to a player ten years older than him.
B.Because he felt very sad that he was no longer the best player.
C.Because this career has brought him so much.
D.Because he felt sorry for his wild lifestyle.
10.From his speech, we can see that ________.
A.he was thankful to his fans B.he refused to accept failure
C.he wished he hadn’t hated tennis when young D.he decided to take marathon as his new career
11.Through winning, Agassi learned that ________.
A.he didn’t try his best in his career B.it must take a long time for anyone to win
C.people need to never give up to win D.winning once or twice is not enough
12.It can be inferred from the passage that Agassi’s father ________.
A.was an excellent tennis player B.was good at raising Agassi
C.played a key role in Agassi choosing his career D.spent most of his time training his son

(2022秋·江苏扬州·高一江苏省邗江中学校考期中)I was in my early 30s, seeking a creative outlet unrelated to boring housework and raising little kids. At 65, George had recently retired and was seeking a rewarding hobby for his golden years. For both of us, painting was “it” and we met at a local painting class. Thus began a friendship that was to last for 25 years - until the day he died.
George took to painting with an awe-inspiring (令人惊叹的) level of passion and commitment, even changing the spare bedroom of his home into a studio. How I envied him, as in my own home and I had neither the space nor the the funds for such a luxury. His painting equipment was comprehensive. George housed many of these items in a tool box- a red metal tool box. For about six years George and I studied together through various units until the completion of the course.
Fast-forward some years and George was now about 80 years old. One day, he rang and told me that he was giving up painting and giving away all his “stuff”.  “I can’t paint, Bev. I don’t know why I ever thought I could,” he declared. Actually, he was mistaken about his painting ability because he had turned out some unique and wonderful works. However, George had decided he was through with painting, and no amount of talking could persuade him otherwise. And so that was why George left all his painting equipment to me. “You have the best talent and are most likely to use it,” he said. After considerable persuasion, I accepted this precious gift on condition that he could get it back at any time. He never did, of course.
I still use much of his equipment today. As I paint, I often remember George, his big personality, generous spirit and unfailing encouragement. The most treasured item is the red tool box, still in good shape. The original shop sticker is till firmly in place although the price has long since worn off. But that’s all right because to my mind some things, like friendship, are beyond price.

A.A desire to create. B.A hobby to kill time.
C.An escape from chores. D.A chance to make fortune.
14.What can we infer form paragraph 3?
A.George once created some fine paintings.
B.George didn’t like his painting equipment.
C.George always wanted to give painting.
D.George misunderstood the author’s painting ability.
15.Why did George call the author?
    A.To admit his own failure.
    B.To present his painting tools.
C.To ask the author a favor.
    D.To make an explanation
16.What is the best title of this passage?
A.A Lesson from My Old Friend.
B.Inspiration for Art from My Partner.
C.Nice George: An Artist with Great Passion.
D.A Red Tool Box: A Bond Between Two Friends.

(2022秋·江苏常州·高一常州市第一中学校考期中)Getting to Antarctica is not easy. The few who are lucky enough to visit this most mysterious continent do so by ships. To reach Antarctica, ships must pass through a notoriously violent area of ocean called the Drake Passage, considered to be the roughest stretch of sea on the planet.
Walls of water thirty, sometimes forty feet high continually crashed about our ship for two solid days. We would hold on to a rope inside the ship while being violently tipped to one extreme side, then to the other, and then back again. My daughter Claire and I were as mentally prepared as we could be.
About two and a half days after entering the Drake Passage, the waters calmed. Soon, we noticed small black spots on nearby pieces of floating ice. Emperor penguins! Then, we began the two-mile hike over the ice to the penguin colony. Within several hundred yards, little clusters of emperors, perhaps ten or so at a time, greeted us, sliding on their bellies and making their wonderful noises, sort of a nasally squeal.
One day two adult emperors with their three chicks in-tow approached Claire, who was resting on the ice. They left the chicks with her, as if she were the babysitter. Twenty minutes later they returned to collect the chicks. And I will never forget the penguin that, when I jokingly asked which way back to the helicopters, pointed a wing in the correct direction. Every night aboard our safe and warm ship, we thought about what it takes to survive in Antarctica, an incredibly harsh place.
But each day on the ice, we also thought about the Drake passage, that monstrous body of water we had to endure to get where we were. Over the course of our visit, we came to respect the power of that sea. We still talk about the penguins, as I’m sure we always will. But we talk about the Drake too. Both experiences were unforgettable, and one would not have bee possible without the other.

(2022秋·江苏南京·高一南京市第一中学校考期中)As a youngster, there was nothing I liked better than Sunday afternoons at my grandfather’s farm in western Pennsylvania. Surrounded by miles of winding stone walls, the house and field provided endless hours of fun for a city kid like me. I was used to tidy living rooms that seemed to whisper, “Not to be touched!”
I can still remember one afternoon when I was eight years old. Since my first visit to the farm, I had wanted more than anything to be allowed to climb the stone walls surrounding the houses. My parents would never approve. The walls were old; some stones were missing, others loose and falling. Still, my idea to climb across those walls grew so strong that finally, one spring afternoon, I had all my courage to enter the living room, where the adults had gathered after Sunday dinner.
“I, uh—I want to climb the stone walls,” I said. Everyone looked up. “Can I climb the stone walls?” Immediately voices of disagreement went up from the women in the room. “Heavens, no! You’ll hurt yourself!” I wasn’t too disappointed; the response was just as I’d expected. But before I could leave the room, I was stopped by my grandfather’s loud voice. “Now hold on just a minute,” I heard him say. “Let the boy climb the stone walls. He has to learn to do things for himself.”
“Go,” he said to me, “and come and see me when you get back.” For the next two and a half hours I climbed those old walls—and had the time of my life. Later I met with my grandfather to tell him about my adventures. I’ll never forget what he said. “Fred,” he said, smiling, “You made this day a special day just by being yourself. Always remember, there’s only one person in this whole world like you, and I like you exactly as you are.”
Many years have passed since then, and today I host the television program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, seen by millions of children throughout America. There have been changes over the years, but one thing remains the same: my message to children at the end of almost every visit. “There’s only one person in this whole world like you.” the kids can count on hearing me say, “and people can like you exactly as you are.”

(2022秋·江苏泰州·高一靖江高级中学校考期中)It is known that not all heroes wear capes (披风), but Chris Van Dorn does, who has saved dozens of animals in animal shelters (收容所). He has given these animals a second chance of life while dressed as the Dark Knight.
Van Dorn has been a big fan of Batman and grew up watching the TV series about animals. He also became a fan of animal rescue (营救) when his family took in a shepherd dog named Mr. Boots.
“While dressing like Batman is not necessary to rescue animals — anyone can be a superhero by adopting (收养) shelter animals — it does keep the focus on saving animals, not the man behind the cape. The dress just makes everybody happy and smile. It’s special to see Batman walking around, and when they find out that he’s doing a good deed in the world, they get even more excited,” Van Dorn said.
Van Dorn always wanted to be an unknown hero. “When I was first starting out, I would sign everything ‘Bruce Wayne’ and not put my real name out there,” Van Dorn said.
Van Dorn will spend long hours in his Batmobile — a Honda Accord — to take four rescued animals at a time to their new homes. He hopes to be able to buy a large truck so he can transport even more animals. He also hopes to use his pilot’s license as a means to transport animals further away quickly.
Now Van Dorn wants to share what he does with more people, saying, “I challenge anyone to go to their local animal shelter because it’s a sad place, but if you can help out in any way — whether that’s to adopt a dog or just volunteer your time, then you should do it.”

C.To bring others happiness. D.To make himself the focus of attention.
    27.What is Van Dorn’s wish?

(2022秋·江苏徐州·高一统考期中)In mid-August, Hou Changliang and Lei Yudan finally held their wedding ceremony at Hou’s hometown in Shaoyang, central China’s Hunan Province.
During the past 11 years, Hou has been traveling and teaching in rural schools across three provinces in Southwest China. In 2011, he signed up for a program, funded by government agencies since 2003. The programme sends college graduates to China’s underdeveloped western regions to work for one to three years in different fields, such as education, agriculture and rural management.
Born into a rural family, Hou knows how life-changing education can be for a rural kid. When most young people were competing for places in big cities, Hou headed deep into the mountains. For Hou, the most difficult aspect of teaching in a remote village was not the poor working conditions, low income that come with it. For two years, he battled to end the alarming drop-out rate among his students in Dahua, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Locals often saw little reason to support school education for their children, especially girls. “The number of students tended to dwindle after winter vacations,” said Hou. “After the Chinese New Year, some were brought to big cities to work when they were old enough.”
Since the 1990s, working in cities has gradually become the main way of employment for rural laborers. Working in cities becomes the most popular path for young people from rural regions to earn a decent(体面的) income and become independent early, but at the cost of their education.
Studies into the high drop-out rate of rural students in middle school show that students from poor families often feel anxious about the burden of education on their parents and are more likely to drop out when they have poor grades.
“If I can’t change the parents’ mind, at least I can change the mind of my students - the future parents,” said Hou.
29.What is the purpose of the programme in China’s underdeveloped western regions?
    A.To develop different fields.
B.To provide jobs for the graduates.
    C.To promote the education development.
D.To guide college students to choose a career.
30.What problem does Hou find most difficult to solve in teaching?
A.The hard working conditions and income.
B.The gap between the rural area and the city.
C.The drop-out rate is too high.
D.The students’ ignorance of the importance of education.
31.What does the underlined word “dwindle” mean in paragraph 5?
    A.Shoot up. B.Remain the same. C.Decrease. D.Change.
32.What can we learn about rural students from the last two paragraphs?
    A.They obey their parents.
    B.Their mind needs to change.
C.They feel great pressure to study.
    D.They generally have poor grades.

(2022秋·江苏南京·高一校联考期中)Former truck driver Chen Xianjun played a final chord (和弦) on the guitar as he and his four band-mates — a salesperson, a farmer and two doctors — enjoyed the sunshine of early winter by West Lake in Zhejiang Province.
“Cherish your life,” Chen sang his song’s last line. Behind him was the photo of a foreigner wearing a warm smile and hugging his guitar. It was the 27-year-old man, Philip Hancock, an Australian teaching English in Chongqing, who made the warm scene come true.
Hancock died in May 2018 in Chongqing. His parents obeyed Hancock’s wish to donate his organs after death. Hancock’s liver and kidneys saved the lives of three people in the band and his corneas (角膜) made the other two regain the eyesight, including Chen.
“Last year, Red Cross officials advised that the five of us form a band in memory of Hancock. They told me that Hancock dreamed of having his own band one day,” Chen said. He accepted the advice instantly, and so did the other recipients of Hancock’s organs. “I’m more than lucky to be able to show respect for the man who gave me a second chance at a full life,” he said.
In the past year, the five “musicians” have learned various instruments. They traveled from different parts of Chongqing and Sichuan Province to meet in a studio for lessons. The Band for One, a fitting name for the group, finally gathered by the lakeside in Hangzhou on November 7 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the implementation (实施) of voluntary organ donations in China.
“I was nervous before stepping on the stage, but I think we all played our parts to the best after so many months of preparation and tension,” Chen Xianjun said. “All the recipients now have the ability to carry on with their lives, and I believe that’s exactly what Hancock wanted for us.”

He cut his long hair, got fitter and tightened up emotionally.( 一场马拉松式的阿加西赛即将开始。他剪了长发,变得更健康,情绪绷紧)”可推断,阿加西开始并不喜欢网球,最终改掉了不良习惯,变得积极向上,因此推断,退役时阿加西情绪激动是因为网球带给他很多东西。故选C。

Actually, he was mistaken about his painting ability because he had turned out some unique and wonderful works. However, George had decided he was through with painting, and no amount of talking could persuade him otherwise. And so that was why George left all his painting equipment to me.(有一天,他打电话告诉我,他要放弃绘画,放弃他所有的“东西”。

但这没关系,因为在我看来,有些东西是无价的,比如友谊)”可知,D项“A Red Tool Box: A Bond Between Two Friends. (红色工具箱:两个朋友之间的纽带)”可以作为本文的最佳标题。故选D。
