As you wander the shops this holiday season, you're likely to encounter the number 9 everywhere. There's $4. 99 for that box of Christmas candy, $299 for that TV, and $99. 99 for those stylish headphones.
The trick of using 9s to price items is so common that we rarely think about it, and if we do, it’s likely to pity the poor suckers(易上当受骗的人)who don’t know $99. 99 is the same as $100.
But the truth is you've probably been tripped up by 9-ending prices without even realizing it. A number of researchers have found something surprising about 9-ending prices. It's not just that $9. 99 isn't a better deal than $10; it's that it's often1 actually a bad deal.
“The 9-ending does some magic to us, ” said Daniel Levy, an economics professor. In a 2021 paper, Mr. Levy and Avichai Snir of Netanya Academic College found that when items' prices ended in 9, they were on average 18% higher than when those same items' prices had different endings. The finding held across a range of items such as cheese, crackers, bottled juices, canned soups, dish detergents, painkillers, cigarettes and so on.
The strategy, called “just below” pricing, as in “$9. 99 is just below $10, ” as well as psychological, odd or charm pricing, has been around so long that no one is sure of its origins. One theory is that the use of the cash register, which was originally marketed as a device to stop employees from stealing.
Robert Schindler, a marketing professor at the Rutgers School of Business-Camden, is skeptical of the cash-register theory because he's found Macy's newspaper advertisements as early as 1880 touting prices like $. 99 and $1. 99 and proclaiming them “positively the best bargains ever offered, and cannot be equaled by any other house:” He believes the origin was always the psychological trick.
Mr. Schindler, 15 years ago, proposed the existence of a "99-meaning paradox”": Consumers strongly associate prices ending in . 99 as being low, but that this cannot be due to a correlation(相关性)between the 99-ending and low prices because such a correlation doesn’t exist.
Yet, if consumers know by now that $9. 99 is basically the same as $10, why do retailers, who after all put serious thought into their pricing strategy, still use it?
    24. Why do consumers tend to give little thought to 9-ending prices?
    A. They are not the poor suckers.
    B. They are so used to such prices.
    C. They think it's just a simple trick.
    D. They think $99. 99 is the same as $100.
    25. What have the researchers found?
    A. $9. 99 isn't a worse deal in the least.
    B. If the price ended in . 99, you probably overpaid.
    C. People preferred to choose items with no 9-ending prices.
    D. Different endings of prices make no difference to consumers.
    26. What does the underlined word “touting” mean?
    A. Rising.
    B. Changing.
    C. Advertising.
    D. Collapsing.
    27. What might be discussed further in the coming paragraph?
    A. How people can avoid being fooled.
    B. What other theories there were in history.
    C. What kind of products people should purchase.
    D. Why such a pricing strategy still exists nowadays.
    C
A bear that wandered what is now China about six million years ago is the oldest bamboo-eating panda ancestor yet found-and it had the same short and fat false thumbs that stick from the wrists of today’s pandas alongside their five fingers. Fossils(化石)of the new species suggest such “thumbs, ” which helped the animals eat bamboo, maintained their peculiar shape to facilitate the beast's four-legged movement.
The fossils, found in the province of Yunnan and described in Scientific Reports, also push back the date that pandas' ancestors likely changed from eating meat to chewing bamboo-from two million to six million years ago. “Giving up on a meat-eating diet means trading the unstable life of a meat-eater for quiet consumption of the plentiful bamboo, ” says paleontologist and study lead author Xiaoming Wang of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, adding that it was “not a bad deal. ”
Although the fossils dug from the province's Zhaotong Basin included only teeth1 and some limb(肢)bones from the bear, these were typical enough for Wang and his colleagues to identify the fossils as belonging to an early member of the panda lineage called Ailurarctos. A wrist bone in the collection, with its proto-thumb, stands out among the remains. “Its structure is really close to that of the living panda, " says Juan Abella Pérez of Miquel Crusafont Catalan Institute of Paleontology in Barcelona, who was not involved in the new study.
Why didn't this short and fat thumb evolve into a longer, larger false thumb to better grasp a meal? The researchers propose that walking on all fours was the key reason: If the panda's thumb were larger, Wang and his colleagues suggest, the appendage(附属物)could have affected its walking or faced a high risk of breaking. In a sense, this makes the evolution of the panda's thumb all the more impressive. The structure was limited by the need to move as well as to eat.
    28. What inspired the scientists’ research?
    A. Pandas.
    B. Bears.
    C. Fossils.
    D. Bamboos.
    29. Why did pandas' ancestors turn to bamboos?
    A. Bamboo tasted better.
    B. They found bamboo sufficient.
    C. They knew it was a good deal.
    D. They were tired of eating meat.
    30. What does Juan think of the finding?
    A. It's convincing.
    B. It matters little.
    C. It's misleading.
    D. It remains to be tested.
    31. What is the passage mainly about?
    A. Where pandas' ancestors lived.
    B. What contributed to pandas' movement.
    C. How pandas' ancestors began to eat bamboo.
    D. Why pandas' ancestors possessed such thumbs.

For people who are not self-disciplined, their life is full of pain, and all pain comes from their own inability. 36
So how do you achieve self-discipline?
Have control over body. Self-disciplined people will not be so bad; those who can lose weight successfully have high requirements for themselves. Health is the most important foundation of your self-discipline. 37 They work for one hour and charge for eight hours, and the efficiency is extremely low. If you don't have time to exercise, you can only spend time seeing a doctor after the red light of your physical condition.
Have a good sense of time. The more self-disciplined you are, the more time you'll have to manage. A precise schedule can save you a lot of unnecessary time costs. 38 The beauty of time front allows you to use more free time to read, exercise, master a skill, and severely surpass the person who is still sleeping in bed.
39 Self-disciplined people will not be willing to stay in the comfort zone, but will keep developing their own new field world with the mentality of giving it a try. Choosing ease and obeying instinct(本能)will bring the game of life to a dead end. And self-discipline may not always let you win. _40 If you decide that suffering is what you deserve, then the light will unavoidably come to you the same way.
    A. Have a feeling of freshness.
    B. But it will never let you lose.
    C. Keep breaking personal ceiling.
    D. People who do not work out are like a red light.

On his first day, he didn't talk to anyone or try to make friends, and during the mealtime, he sat at the corner table in the cafeteria and ate his lunch alone. No one in the class stepped forward to welcome him. Instead, they ignored him and refused to sit next to him in class.
The next day, he was sitting alone in the classroom when a boy approached him and asked, “Can I sit next to you?”
    “Sure, ”Liam smiled.
    “I'm Joel. And you?”
    “Liam. ”
“Is it your first day today?”
“No, it's my second day. I recently moved into this neighborhood. ”
“Oh, I didn't know that. I skipped school yesterday, so I thought it was your first day today. ”
As days passed, Liam and Joel discovered that they lived on the same street. After school, they often played catch in the nearby park, a game they both loved playing. It only took Liam a few weeks to become best friends with Joel.
One day, Joel skipped school, and Liam had to sit alone in class, wondering why. Feeling worried, he went to ask his class teacher.
“Liam, I'm so sorry, but your best friend got into an accident last night, ” the teacher put her hand on Liam's shoulder. “He lost his parents in the car crash. ”
“Oh no!” Liam covered his face with his hands.
Two months later, Joel was allowed to go home after a spinal surgery. However, he couldn't walk and was restricted to a wheelchair. The day he arrived home with his grandmother, Liam rushed to Joel's house with a candy bar and the ball they used to play catch with.
Joel's eyes lit upon seeing Liam. The boys talked to each other for hours before Liam's mother came to pick him up at night.
While he was happy to see his friend after months, he felt terrible knowing Joel could never walk again. Moreover, seeing his elderly grandma struggle to push the wheelchair made Liam feel even worse.
“Mom, I feel so bad for Joel, ” he told his mother at the dinner table later that evening.
“I can understand, sweetheart. But you don't have to feel sad. You can help your friend
adjust to his new lifestyle and make him feel better. Pitying him would make him feel worse. ” 注意:

A week later, Liam asked Joel to play catch with him outside and he agreed. However, when the boys started playing, Joel was missing most of the catches since he couldn’t run around. Later that night, Liam kept thinking about what his mother had said at the dinner table last week. He thought of all the ways he could help Joel and then realized the best option was to buy an electric wheelchair, which would allow Joel to move around without his grandma’s help, to play catch and do other tasks independently.
“How will I get an electric wheelchair for him? It must be so expensive! ” Liam was thinking hard when he came up with an idea of setting up a charity contest at school to raise funds. To his delight, many teachers, students and their parents took part in the contest. The money in the donation box was enough to buy Joel the latest electric wheelchair. Thanks to it, Liam and Joel continued playing catch and Joel even attended school. Eventually, Liam made more friends and never had to eat lunch alone, not even when Joel skipped school.

W: So, we are finally moving to our new house. You’ll be happy to be leaving this place. As you said, it’s far too small.

W: Hi, Todd! This is Gayle Harper. Do you remember me from high school?
M: Hi, Gayle. Of course, I do. You were our class president.
W: I still am! That’s why I’m calling. We’re organizing an event for our class. It’s a chance for all of us to get together again. We can remember the old times and talk about what’s happening in our lives now. Would you be interested in attending?
M: Count me in! When will it be held?
W: In March. If you give me your email address, I’ll send you more information.
    M: Great, thanks!

M: May I know when it leaves?

M: When will the 9:10 flight land in London?
    W: At 1:15 p.m.
M: OK. I’d like to book a ticket for this one.
W: All right, sir. Please confirm your flight no later than 12 o’clock two days before you set off. Otherwise, your reservation will be canceled.

M: Today we welcome Mary Jones to our show.
    W: Thank you.
M: Now Mary, you are about to do an amazing thing. You are going to row a boat alone across the Atlantic Ocean.
W: That’s right. We finished testing the boat on Monday. She’ll be taken to the port on Wednesday, ready for the journey the next day.
    M: It’s crazy, isn’t it?
W: Ha-ha, a lot of people say that, so I suppose you are right.
M: One woman rowing thousands of miles alone. Didn’t you think of taking someone with you?
W: Well, the original plan was for three of us to go. Then it was down to two, and finally just me.
M: Do you enjoy your own company?
W: Well, I’ll have my teddy bear Billy with me. He protects me on all my adventures. Plus, radio and a good GPS map.
    Text 9
    W: Hello. 4421.
M: I’ve got a hold of you at last. I’ve been trying to reach you all morning.
W: There’s something wrong with the telephone. What’s the matter?
M: There’ve been some changes to the email I sent.
W: OK. Wait a moment, I’ll get a pen and some paper so I can pass on the information to Ron. He’s gone to the sales department, but he’ll be back here to have a meeting soon. OK. I’m ready.
M: There’ll be 10 more people attending the show, so you’ll need more copies of the report to hand out. Please make up the difference before we leave for the Wilton Hotel.
W: Sure, I’ll tell him. And how are we getting to the Wilton Hotel?
M: There’s a regular bus service from the station, but I think it might be safer for us to take a taxi. It shouldn’t cost much.
    W: Can’t we walk? I mean it’s not far.
M: Well, I guess we can…OK. Please pass the information to Ron and see you later.
    W: OK, bye.

The Academy Awards are annual awards that honor the highest achievements in cinema.
Although the official name of the ceremony is the Academy Awards, it is most commonly referred to as the Oscars. Since 1929, they have been one of the most watched television events of the year. There are over 7000 members in the Academy Awards as of 2018. Together, they vote who should win in the 5 major categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay. To qualify for the ceremony in late February, films must open in California between January 1st and midnight of December 31st the previous year. The award itself is a statue of a golden man holding a sword and standing on a wheel of film. Academy rules state that the winners are allowed to refuse the award, but they are not allowed to sell it. Although it is an American awards show, anyone from any country can win an award. Chinese-born director Ang Lee has won the “Best Director” award twice. Although he almost won for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), he did for his films Brokeback Mountain (2005) and Life of Pi (2012).
