Every day I pass by a homeless old man on the street. He usually sits near where I go to school. Whenever I pass by, he says “hello” in a cheerful manner, and I always say it back. I give him any extra(多余的)change I have.
The old man always wears an old watch. It is not an expensive watch by any means, but it serves its purpose. One day I noticed he wasn’t wearing it any more. I asked him why and he looked down and told me that the battery(电池)had died so he threw it away. I knew he couldn’t buy a new battery and he had no enough money to buy a new watch.
He stayed on my mind all day, and I knew what I had to do. I went out to a shop and bought him a watch. It was not an expensive one, but one that was very similar to the one he had.
When I saw him the next day, he was smiling and cheerful as ever. When I bent down to put some change in his cup, I also dropped the watch in. I didn’t say anything about it. I just smiled at him and kept on walking. He didn’t even notice it until I left. I looked back and watched as he pulled the watch from the cup. He looked to me and I just smiled and nodded. He put the watch on with a big smile on his face and I walked happily on my way.

The Big Lottery is giving money to groups of teenagers between 14 and 19 who want to become active citizens. The teenagers who would like to help make the area you live in better, cleaner, safer and friendlier can actually get money for improving your local community(社区). We have $80,000 to give away. We are looking for young people to take part in schemes(规划)and projects near where they live.
Here are a few easy things you could do to get started.
Meeting the neighbours: Everybody needs good neighbours. Knock on people’s door and find out what they would like to improve in your area. Set a date for a meeting and then make some plans together. If you don't want to go to their houses, then you could always put a note through their doors.
Neighbourhood Watch: Neighbourhood watch schemes are very popular in the UK. If you go away on holiday and leave your house, it’s very nice to know that a neighbour is keeping an eye on it. It’s a good way to make the area you live in safer. You could set one up easily and quickly.
Lending a hand: There are often elderly people living in the neighbourhood who may not be able to do the things that you can. Offer to do their shopping once a week, look after their garden for them or maybe walk their dog.
No littering: Nobody likes picking up other people's rubbish, but a clean street can make all the difference. Take turns to go out once or twice a week and see what you can find. You never know that one day you might find something valuable.
Recycling: Nearly two-thirds of your rubbish can be recycled. Some areas have already provided places for people to recycle bottles, tins, plastic and paper. Find out if this is done in your neighbourhood. If it’s not, do something about it.
So go on...Just tell us what kind of project you want to join in. Then well send you more details. Take positive action and help make your neighbourhood a better place to live.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (孤独症) is a disability that can cause serious social, communication and behavioral(行为的) problems. People with ASD may not look different from common people, but their ways of communicating, behaving and learning may be different. Some people with ASD even need a lot of help in their daily lives.
People with ASD often have many problems. They might do things for many times and might not want changes in their daily activities. Many people with ASD may also have difficulty learning, paying attention or telling their needs. Symptoms of ASD begin during early childhood and probably last throughout a person’s life.
Diagnosing(诊断) ASD can be very difficult because there is no medical test, like a blood test to decide if a person has ASD or not. Doctors make a decision by looking at the child’s behavior and development. ASD can sometimes be diagnosed at 18 months or younger. By age 2, an experienced doctor can be very dependable in diagnosing ASD.However, many children may not see a doctor until much older.
There is now no cure(治愈) for ASD.But studies show that early treatment(治疗) can improve a child’s development, so it is important to talk to your child’s doctor as soon as possible.
We do not know all of the causes of ASD.However, most scientists agree that genes(基因) have something to do with the possibility of developing ASD.
If you think your family might have ASD, or you think there could be a problem with the way he or she plays, learns, speaks or acts, go to a doctor and share your opinions. If you’re not sure who to ask, call Early Childhood Helpline at 674-664-0198, or visit our website http://echcenter.org.

A 10-year old boy decided to learn judo though he had lost his left arm in a car accident. The boy was doing well, so he couldn’t understand why, after three months of training, the master taught him only one move.
“Master,” the boy finally asked, “shouldn’t I be learning more moves?” “This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” the teacher answered.
Several months later, the teacher took the boy to his first competition. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent(对手) became impatient and charged; the boy skillfully used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the final.
This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger and more experienced. Soon after the match started, the boy seemed to lose. Thinking that the boy might get hurt, the judge called a time-out. He was going to stop the match when the teacher appeared. “No,” the teacher said. “Let him continue.” A short time after the match carried on, his opponent made a careless mistake. At once, the boy used his move to pin(压住) him. The boy won the match and the competition.
On the way home, the boy asked the teacher what was really in his mind, “Why could I win the competition with only one move?” The teacher answered “First, you’ve mastered one of the most difficult throws in judo. Second, your opponent can only attack your left arm to win you.”
