When the bell rings at 9 o’clock, He Yue, 18, and a group of other students from Jiangsu Xishan Senior High School, crowd into the student community. They quickly put on their work uniforms and act as different kinds of workers. They could be a banker, a postman, a radio host or even a leader.

This is part of a project to create a simulated (模拟的) city run by students. Since last year, He Yue has been serving as an office worker for the students’ bank named K-bank. Unlike other students, she has a busy “job” during the 40-minute break: help prepare for change, fill in forms and record every deal. We might usually see this scene in science fiction or movies: people are traveling between cities in tubes. The tube trains are even faster than planes, and people arrive at their destinations in minutes. Well, one big step was taken to make this happen.

On May 11, 2018, the first open air test of the propulsion system (推进系统) for a tube train, which is called the Hyperloop, took place in the Nevada desert, US. The system went from 0 to 169 kilometers per hour in just over a second.

We may feel shocked at the fact but this isn’t the final goal. Elon Musk, founder of the US space company Space X, first had the idea for the Hyperloop in 2013. He wants passengers to travel in low-pressure tubes, propelled (推进) by magnets (磁铁), at a speed of around 1,200 Kilometers per hour. The common speed of Boeing airplanes is 800 to 1,100 kilometers per hour.

Musk calls the Hyperloop the fifth main kind of transportation for humans, after ships, cars, trains and planes. According to him, the Hyperloop is safe, produces fewer greenhouse gases and can work in any weather.

But right now, Hyperloop One is still far away from its final product. One major problem about making the inter-city Hyperloop available is that it could cost too much. “They’re up against airlines, and airlines don’t need to build hundreds of miles of tubes,” said Jose Gomez Ibanez, a professor of city planning at Harvard University, US. So we will have to wait and see.

If life can be compared to a meal, I think the mistakes are like salt and the success is a candy.

As the classes went on, I slowly found that I was making connections. My 10 years of playing the piano has allowed me to perform for others. My several years of writing has led me to become a school reporter. I knew that my Chinese classes would allow me to speak Chinese well. As the teachers helped me build up the confidence, I soon began tasting the sweetness. So what did my summer really taste like? It tasted like the Chinese food that, for the first time, I did not order in English, my mother language.
