When I was five or six years old,I remember watching TV and seeing other children suffer in other parts of the world.I would say to myself,“When I grow up,when I can get rich,I will save kids all over the world.”
At 17,I started my career here in America, and by the age of 18,I started my first charity organisation.I went on to team up with other organisations in the following years, and met, helped, and even lost some of the most beautiful souls, from six-year-old Jasmina Anema who passed away in 2010 from leukemia (白血病),whose story inspired thousands of people to volunteer as donors,to my grandmother, who lost her battle with cancer in 2012,which is the very reason and the driving force behind the Clara Lionel Foundation(CLF).We’re all human. And we all just want a chance: a chance at life,a chance in education,a chance at a future, really. And at CLF,our mission is to impact as many lives as possible, but it starts with just one.
People make it seem too hard to do charity work. The truth is,you don’t have to be rich to help others. You don’t need to be famous. You don’t even have to be college-educated.But it starts with your neighbour, the person right next to you,the person sitting next to you in class, the kid down the block in your neighbourhood. You just do whatever you can to help in any way that you can.And today,I want to challenge each of you to make a commitment to help one person, one organisation, one situation that touches your heart. My grandmother always used to say,“If you’ve got a dollar, there’s plenty to share.”

Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal.Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.
Different cultures emphasize the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust.Even with people at work,it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”,usually over a cup of tea, before they do any job.In many European countries—like the UK or France—people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafés rather than at the office.
Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures.I once made a speech in Thailand.I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion;instead, there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better,I realised that they thought I was talking too much.In my own culture,we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.
Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems.Certainly,English and German cultures share similar values;however,Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude.In fact, this is just because the culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.
People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However,if we can understand them better,a multicultural environment will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.

The hit movie Notting Hill begins with a famous scene.Hugh Grant knocks into Julia Roberts and spills orange juice all over her. After it happened,Grant repeatedly says,“I’m so sorry.I’m so sorry.”
His actions in this scene are very British. If Roberts’ character were from Britain, then she would probably apologise repeatedly as well—even if it were not her fault. But this doesn’t happen in the movie,as Roberts is from the US.
A report in The Telegraph once said that three quarters of British people apologise when they ran into someone in the street—regardless of whether they are responsible or not.In fact, the British use “sorry” in many situations. For example,if they mishear someone, they say “Sorry?” The person they are talking to will also apologise by replying,“No,I am sorry!” This can go on for up to five minutes as they compete for who is the most sorry.
Why are the British so sorry?Mark Tyrrell,a psychology writer in the UK,thinks that their apologetic tendencies are rooted in the British class system.“We say sorry because historically the new middle class in Britain had to apologise for not being the working class, but also for not really being the upper class.” Another theory is that they apologise to avoid conflicts. For example,if they bump into someone,he might get angry. To avoid this, they instantly say “Sorry!”
True manners are about being considerate, and today’s constant use of apologising shows that we are perhaps not as thoughtful as we once were. The word “sorry” has lost some of its meaning.Do you see my point?Sorry,it might just be a British thing.

B.Americans care less about manners than British people do.
C.That British people apologise so much is linked to the class system.
D.British people care too much about which social class they are from.
答案C

34.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.It’s unnecessary for British people to be so polite.
B.The overuse of apologising shows Britons are truly sincere.
C.People should give up the traditional use of the word “sorry”.
D.Using “sorry” more doesn’t necessarily mean people are more polite.
根据第四段的内容以及最后一段中的“today’s constant use of apologising shows that we are perhaps not as thoughtful as we once were.”
35.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To explore the best way of saying sorry.
B.To explain why the British overuse the word “sorry”.
C.To show how saying sorry has changed over time.
D.To suggest many British people lack traditional manners.

How to start a conversation with
someone you don’t know
Introduce Yourself
It’s not necessary to be clever when you introduce yourself.Simply focus on being genuine and sincere. When you approach the other person to start the conversation, give him a warm smile and clearly state your name. 36 Remember to speak at a regular pace, taking care not to speak too quickly or slowly,so that the other person will have no difficulty understanding you.
Begin the Conversation
37 A comment about the weather or a current event may be most appropriate.Avoid beginning the conversation with anything too personal,as this may make the other person feel uncomfortable to continue the conversation. After you make your opening comments, give the person enough time to respond.Show a sincere interest in the thoughts he expresses about the subject.
Continue the Conversation
If you are building a rapport, feel free to move on to a bit more personal topics to continue the conversation. 38 Open-ended questions—those that can’t be answered by a simple “yes” or “no”—help to keep a conversation going.
39
When you have run out of things to say or need to move on to do something else, prepare your exit strategy. You may say that you need to use the bathroom or catch up with someone else.Let the other person know how much you enjoyed talking to her. 40
A.End the Conversation.
B.Bring up a general topic to begin the conversation.
C.This will help keep the conversation flowing freely.
D.If appropriate, make plans to talk again at a later date.
E.Your conversational partner will feel valued and appreciated.

59.was found 考查语态。由After careful assessment可知,此处用一般过去时,又因noise与find之间是被动关系,故填was found。
warn sb/sth to do sth意为“提醒某人/某物做某事”。
on the other hand
62.or/otherwise 考查连词。
63.that/which 考查定语从句。

I always wondered how people would react if I tried to approach a total stranger for help in a busy place like a street corner or in a bustling mall.I personally have always hurried past a stranger who tried to catch my attention in a busy place or when I am rushing around.
Yesterday I had a taste of being stuck in such a desperate situation where my only hope of help would have to come from a total stranger.
I was in a busy shopping mall buying a large piece of luggage. After the purchase in one of the large, fancy, expensive shops,I picked up my phone from my pocket to call my driver waiting in the parking lot and my phone was dead.
I then requested the shop assistant who had just sold me the luggage, which was not cheap at all,if she could ring the number of my driver for me.She replied, still all smiles,“I’m sorry sir,but it is the shop policy that we cannot use mobile phones while working in the shop.”
As I was wondering what kind of policy that was,I saw a nice-looking teenage boy coming toward me.Remembering my wife’s interesting theory that beautiful people are more likely to give you a hand when you’re in trouble,I thought I might have a chance. But before I could say a word,he walked past me.It turned out he simply didn’t see me.
I waited a bit longer in the mall but it seemed nobody bothered to look at me.Disappointed and tired,I got out of the shop onto the busy street in front.I stood there with people rushing by,looking at their faces to see if there was a sign of kindness on their face.I began wondering how many times I had reacted to strangers like the shop girl and the teenager.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
At that point I saw a young mother with her two kids.
Finally,a man wearing a cheap T-shirt and dirty jeans seemed to notice me.
At that point I saw a young mother with her two kids.I thought that a beautiful woman with charming blue eyes must be willing to help me.So,with great expectation,I trotted briskly towards her with an appropriate smile on my face, and requested courteously if she could be kind enough to make a phone call for me.However, what I saw was a woman’s face disfigured by frowns and what I heard was a sound of dismay and suspicion under her breath.Without a word, she pulled her kids to escape from me,as if scared by a murderer.I stood there, motionless, with a blank face and a sinking heart.
Finally,a man wearing a cheap T-shirt and dirty jeans seemed to notice me.I squeezed a smile though it failed to mask my weariness, and requested him the same thing.Unexpectedly,he took out his mobile phone for me without hesitation or any probing questions.Dancing in his eyes was the real kindness that I had been struggling to seek for so long. From that day on,I began helping other strangers in distress, just like the poor-looking but kind man, with the aim of passing kindness and melting the ice in many people’s hearts.
