Julia Koch began her second year as a first-grade teacher in a virtual classroom at Edgewood Elementary School in Muskegon Heights,Michigan. One September afternoon a few weeks into the school year, she received a call from Cynthia Phillips, who was having technical difficulties with her granddaughter’s tools for online learning.
Koch immediately knew something was wrong with Phillips. The two women had spoken numerous times before, but Koch had never heard the grandmother sound quite like this. Her words were so jumbled that Koch could barely understand her, though she was able to make out that Phillips had fallen four times that day.Koch called her principal,Charlie Lovelady, who assured her that he would call and check on Phillips himself.
Just like Koch,Lovelady could barely understand Phillips. He suspected she might be having a stroke—he recognized the signs from when his own father had suffered one.Lovelady was able to make out the word kids and immediately became concerned that Phillips’s two grandchildren, ages six and eight, were probably home alone with her—she is their primary guardian—and scared.Lovelady asked his office manager to send an ambulance to the grandmother’s home. Then Lovelady called Vandiebilt Mathews and Keytria Burt-Walker,two deans in the school district,to tell them what was going on.Both of them dropped everything and drove to the family’s home.
When they pulled up less than ten minutes later, the EMTs were treating Phillips while the two girls, looking visibly shaken, were outside with a neighbor. The quick response from Koch and Lovelady saved Phillips’s life. She arrived at the hospital in time to get treatment and before chronic damage occurred.
“If it wasn’t for them,I wouldn’t be here,” said Phillips from her hospital bed about a month after her stroke. Thanks to an extended stay in the hospital, she has regained most of the movement throughout her body except for one hand and a portion of her mouth, which affects her speech.
Virtual learning has been a challenge across the country, but it’s fair to say that in Muskegon Heights it has helped the community grow closer. Many teachers there gave their personal phone numbers to students and families in case they needed extra help.In this case, the exchange was literally life-altering.
4.What did Koch found when she received Phillips’s call?
A.Phillips had difficulties with online learning.
B.Phillips could barely understand her.
C.Phillips had fallen for a long time.
D.Phillips couldn’t express herself clearly.
5.How did Lovelady help to save Phillips’s life?
A.He sent an ambulance to her home.
B.He offered her treatment in time.
C.He drove her to the hospital immediately.
D.He made a quick response to her disease.
6.What is one of the bad effects the stroke left on Phillips?
A.She could not move about properly.
B.She could not speak clearly.
C.She could not have meals properly.
D.She could not use her hands as before.
7.What does the underlined word“they”(Last Paragraph) refer to?
A.Phone numbers. B.Teachers.
C.Students and families. D.Communities.

On Sept.21,2020,scientists announced that Arctic sea ice has already lost two-thirds of its amount over the past four decades. It is part of a shocking trend in polar heating that is already seeing impacts across the globe.
Throughout the spring and summer,Arctic sea ice melted away faster than it usually does, causing the largest loss of Arctic sea ice cover since satellite records began in the 1970s.This year’s minimum was reached on September 15,at 3.74 million m2 compared with the previous low—4.17 million m2—set in 2007.
What’s causing this loss of sea ice? The short answer is our heating climate.A recent study showed that the influence of heat has more than doubled over the past decade or so,which means the melting of nearly a meter thickness of sea ice each year.
The biggest effects of the loss of Arctic sea ice,of course, will be felt locally:from the more possible snowfall to more storms with stronger winds. These will also cause waves as well as rising temperatures. In fact, the increased temperatures transformed northern forests into tinderboxes ready to burn. That melt also means polar bears are losing critical habitat and Inuit hunters are losing ice to preserve their traditions and culture.
On a larger scale, the greatest impact may be the changes in the Arctic’s ability io function as a cooling system for the global ocean.A warmer Arctic will affect the temperature differences between the northern polar region and areas further south. That may,in turn, create stronger heat waves, droughts, floods and potential impacts on farming. And all of us will be more exposed to the disastrous effects of climate breakdown.
We need to hit the reset button right now on how we look after each other and Arctic sea ice to help our planet cope with the climate breakdown.
8.What do the figures in paragraph 2 show us?
A.The ways of sea ice melting. B.The reasons for sea ice melting.
C.The big fall in the amount of sea ice. D.The great damage of sea ice melting.
9.What may happen due to the Arctic sea ice loss?
A.The reduction of snowfall. B.The global climate emergency.
C.The direct outbreak of forest fires. D.The disappearance of Inuit hunters.
10.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Stressing the importance of oceans.
B.Warning people of the possible risks.
C.Putting forward some useful measures.
D.Appealing to the public to protect Arctic sea ice.
11.Which can be the best title for the text?
A.The earth is facing a catastrophe.
B.Climate breakdown is on the way.
C.Global heating sees Arctic sea ice loss.
D.Arctic sea ice is important for mankind.

It was May 23,2016.Arnot,the 32-year-old mountain guide, reached the top of Qomolangma without the use of oxygen (O2) equipment. It was achieved after seven years, three previous attempts, and fourteen straight hours of climbing.
After 15 minutes at the top,Arnot began her descent(下坡).Eight hours later, she reached the camp at 7,600 metres and became the first American woman—and only the seventh woman ever—to successfully reach Mount Qomolangma without oxygen equipment.
“There are so many reasons for her impressive achievement, especially the physical and emotional efforts that she has put forth over the years to make this happen,” says the professional climber and photographer Richards.“The mental courage that it requires is something very few people have.”
Arnot didn’t start climbing until she was 19 years old.Money was tight in her family, and climbing mountains never occurred in her mind. After graduating from college,Arnot was invited by her friend to climb a mountain.“It totally changed my life,” says Arnot.“I always know that if you want something, you can achieve it,but knowing what you want is a whole different thing,” she says.“I am athletic but not competitive. After my first climbing,I knew immediately that mountains are what I want—as that is where I felt home for the first time in my life.”
After that first climb, she devoted herself to learning how to climb and move through mountain. It was during her second trip to Qomolangma in 2009 that she first set her sights on a no-oxygen attempt. However, while hiking into Qomolangma Base Camp that year, she hurt her leg and wasn’t able to climb without oxygen. In 2013 she nearly made it to the top,but was forced to take oxygen at 8,504 metres while helping another climber.
When Arnot finally stood atop Qomolangma, she called her best friend,“I reached the top and I’m not using any oxygen.” Then, tears began to stream down from her eyes.So much of Arnot’s life has been about pushing the limits of her abilities, and in this case, she has also pushed up against the outer limits of the human spirit.

Practice self-control by setting goals and sticking to them
Make your goals specific and long-term.Psychology studies have shown that abstract(抽象的),big-picture thinking leads to self-control.Instead of focusing on the moment, look toward bigger goals like success in school or sports. 16
●Write down your goals and hang them up where you can see them regularly. 17
●Make behavioral goals too.Commit to behaving yourself in public and not having any unintended outbursts.
● 18 Get straight A’s,keep practicing guitar until you’re comfortable enough to play a gig,or exercise four times a week.Stick to your goals seriously.
●When you are to break a promise or a goal, take a deep breath and think about why you set the goal in the first place. That long term commitment is more important than your momentary impulse(冲动).
●Make sure your goals are specific. 19
●Try setting up a punishment and reward system for yourself. 20 Likewise,if you decide to skip a workout, make up for it by working out twice as long the next day.Practices like these will lead to control over your desires and actions.
●Make specific long-term goals with specific short-term ways to achieve them.
A.Keep your goals positive.
B.Remind yourself of your goals regularly.
C.General goals are much easier to forget about.
D.Focusing on the future will help you behave in the present.
E.Move up to harder goals like making the starting basketball team.

One sunny afternoon,Janes,a seven-year-old girl whose parents went to their farm to harvest corns, was left home with their dog,Yeller.Feeling rather bored, she decided to go out for an adventure alone. With a toy gun in her hand and a whistle around her neck,Jane crossed a large area of grassland into the woods before she realized that she was lost.
Sitting on a rock and wondering what to do,Jane began crying. After a while, she decided to walk along a wide path lined with tall trees and thick bushes. It was getting dark, but she still couldn’t find her way home.Suddenly, she heard a strange noise, which was actually the sound of wind blowing leaves. She ran quickly in the woods until there was no road ahead but a river. She lost her toy gun while running.Cold and scared,Jane sat down near the river and fell asleep against a tree.
Her parents were back from work but could not find their daughter.Deeply worried about Jane’s safety, they locked the door and went out to search for her.
Their dog,Yeller, was left at home.He noticed something was wrong because it was dark but there was nobody home.He sensed that Jane was in danger. He tried to get out,but the door was locked. He jumped through a window, looked in the fields but couldn’t find her anywhere. However, from the ground came a familiar smell as he lowered his head.He followed the smell and walked across the grassland until he found the toy gun.But Jane was not there. The dog circled around the woods, barking loudly into the air.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。

To encourage students to take exercise and relax their mind,we’re going to organize a mountain-climbing activity on April 10.
We’re to gather at the school gate and start off at 7:20 a.m.by bus and get back at 7:00 p.m.We’ll climb Mountain Tai in the morning,at the top of which we’ll have a picnic at noon.In the afternoon we’ll be divided into groups and have some free time.
Remember to take photos and keep a record for the photo exhibition or the essay contest to be held later at our school.Besides, take your lunch and drinking water with you.
第二节
Jane opened her eyes and heard Yeller barking nearby.Excitedly, she tried to yell to make herself heard but in vain because her voice was too weak.Suddenly,it occurred to her that she brought with her a whistle. She blew it with all her strength and the whistle pierced through the night sky.Yeller heard it and rushed towards the river. They were very glad and Yeller jumped around and licked her face.
Weak and hungry,Jane walked back home with Yeller leading the way.Approaching home, she found her parents waiting anxiously out of the door. They were just about to call the police when they heard Yeller’s barking.Seeing their daughter and dog coming back, they burst into tears of relief. That night,Jane had a large piece of cake while Yeller had a hero’s supper:a huge meal of steak.
