Kailash knows the thought of public speaking is enough to send many people into a cold sweat-he’s been there. He made his first public speaking in Year 4 at a time when his confidence had been broken down by a bully(霸凌者). He still gets scared thinking about it today because he had to go in front of the whole class and recite a poem that made no sense whatsoever.

By Year 5, Kailash started to hone his skills with the help of his father so that he could run for school captain in Year 6, but he was very shy and he couldn’t speak very well. So he started to practise and practise. That’s a good point for kids-they don’t apply for leadership positions because they are nervous, even though they’d make great leaders.

Kailash went on to score the role of vice-captain, despite his speech not going to plan. He made a joke but he made it so poorly that they laughed at him, not at the joke. But he said making mistakes is a key part of the public speaking learning. Things like that happen and it’s OK. You have to have the confidence to be OK with that and the resilience(弹性)to get back up.

Kailash, who counts a 4000-strong Sydney Opera House crowd and a community-based TEDx event among his public speaking credits, said public speaking skills have huge benefits in day-to-day life, from interacting with teachers to going for a job interview. Public speaking teaches young people to be comfortable in themselves. So it teaches you about self-esteem, to accept who you are. Making eye contact and smiling to connect with your audience are other key steps in pulling off public speaking, along with wearing something that makes you feel comfortable and confident.

4What does the underlined word “hone” in paragraph 2 mean?

    ATest. BReview. CPerform. DExercise.

5What can we know about Kailash’s running for school captain?

AHe made it. BHe failed in it.

CHe gave it up halfway. DHe missed it.

6Which word best describes Kailash’s attitude to others’ teasing?

    AConservative. BSkeptical. COppositional DTolerant.

7What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    AThe benefits of public speaking.

BThe importance of eye contact and smiling.

    CKailash’s achievements in public speaking.

DThe comfort and confidence suitable clothes bring.

Traditionally, robots have been hard, made of metal and other rigid material. But a team of scientists at Harvard University in the US has managed to build an entirely soft robot-one that draws inspiration from an octopus (章鱼).

Described in science journal Nature, the “Octobot” could pave the way for more effective autonomous robots that could be used in searchrescue and exploration. “The Octobot is minimal system which may serve as a foundation for a new generation of completely soft, autonomous robots” the study’s authors wrote.

Robots built for precise, repetitive movements in a controlled environment don’t do so well on rough terrains (地形) or in unpredictable conditions. And they aren’t especially safe around humans, because they’re made out of hard and heavy parts that could be potentially dangerous to their users.

So researchers have been working on building soft robots for decades. They’re taken inspiration from nature, looking to animals from jellyfish to cockroaches, which are often made up of more flexible matter.

But creating a completely soft robot remains a challenge. Even if engineers build a silicone (硅酮) body, it’s still a grand challenge to construct flexible versions of essential parts, such as a source of power.

“Although soft robotics is still in its early stage, it holds great promise for several applications, such as search-rescue operations and exploration,” Barbara Mazzolai and Virgilio Mattoli of the Italian Institute of Technology’ Center for Micro-BioRobotics, wrote in a comment. “Soft robots might also open up new approaches to improving wellness and quality of life.”

8What’s the special feature of “Octobot”

AIt’s soft. BIt’s made of metal.

CIt’s very small. DIt looks like an octopus.

9What’s the disadvantage of traditional robots?

AThey’re hard to control. BThey’re too heavy to move.

CThey can’t predict conditions. DThey can’t behave well all the time.

10One of the biggest challenges is to build Octobot’s    ________.

    Asilicone body Bcomplex components

    Cprecise movements Dflexible power source

11What’s the possible application of “Octobot”

    AMedical research. BLife rescue.

    CMachine operation. DHouse cleaning.

In the US, many people prefer sports and sports are not just for fun. They’re almost a “religion”. Thousands of sports fans buy expensive tickets to watch their favorite teams and athletes play in person. Other fans watch the games at home, sticking to their TV sets, never missing a game. Many a wife becomes a “sports widow” during her husband’s favorite season. Americans’ devotion to sports has created a new class of wealthy people: professional athletes. Sports stars often receive million dollar salaries. Some even make big money by appearing in advertisements for soft drinks, shoes and almost everything.

Sports are an important part of American culture. Throughout their school life, Americans learn to play many sports. Many students try out for the school teams. Athletic events at universities attract scores of fans and benefit the whole community. Many people also enjoy noncompetitive activities, like hiking, cycling, horseback riding, camping or hunting.

Many sports were imported from other countries. Europeans brought tennis, golf, bowling and boxing to America. Football and baseball came from other Old World games. Only basketball has a truly American origin. Americans export sports fever as well. Satellites broadcast games to sports fans around the globe. NBA is a good example. The names of American superstars like basketball great Michael Jordan have become household words all over the world.

12Many a wife becomes a “sports widow” in the US probably because ________.

    Athey are serious in religion

    Btheir husbands stick to sports

    Cthey are devoted to sports

    Dtheir husbands are missing

13Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

AThe US sports stars can earn a large sum of money via the media.

BAmerican people like to exchange different sports from each other.

CLots of American people take part in noncompetitive activities.

DAmerican students go in for various sports and athletic events.

14We can infer from the passage that ________.

    Amost Americans like competition

Ball the Americans are sports fans

    Csports culture influences the world

    DAmerica has invented many sports

15The writer mainly intends to tell us that ________.

Ahow important sports are in America

Bwhere sports can help to make money

Cwhy sports are so popular in America

    Dwhat affect American’s everyday life

    二、七选五(共10分)

    Think Positive and Feel Positive

When you’re in a stressful situation, are you confident or unsafe? Do you react positively or negatively?

____16____A study by researchers at the University of Notre Dame found that negative thinking, and depression coming from it, can be catching in certain circumstances.

For example, the researchers studied 103 freshman college roommates who’d been paired casually.____17____ Specifically, the researchers measured the subject’s likelihood to see negative events as a reflection of their abilities and disadvantages.

After only six months, it became clear that thinking patterns and styles can be catching. ____18____And students paired with more positive thinking roommates were more likely to become more positive in their thinking and report less depression.

___19___So they might be particularly accessible to adopting the thought and behavior patterns of people around them —perhaps more so than people in less intense situations at other stages of life.

But maybe not. Other research has shown that, in general, people are affected by how those around them think. __20__

AThe answer may depend in part on whom you’re around.

BNow college freshman are in a unique, life changing environment.

CHowever, think positive and feel positive is quite important for college students.

DStudents paired with a negative-thinking roommate “caught” that style and became more depressed themselves.

EThey measured each roommate’s cognitive weakness, or tendency to give in to negative thinking and depression.

FSo surrounding a negative, depressed person with people who think positively could be a powerful form of treatment.

GBut what was to the researchers’ embarrassment was that the subjects never talked with each and stayed apart from each other for most of the time.

However, there was little Toddy could do, for his mother just couldn't buy him new clothes.

Two of the kids were Garrett and Graham, a pair of football players. But over time, they realized that their hurtful words at Toddy felt like bullying and seemed to be slowly destroying Todd's pride.

Graham thought that he needed to do something, so he and Garrett made a plan.

    46Dear Mike,

With the summer vacation drawing near, my class have come with a plan to get the most out of it. Our plan is to go to a mountain area and stay with the local families so that we can experience the local culture and customs. Additionally, while staying there, we intend to teach the children English, who are generally poor at English due to lack of proper training.

Join us, Mike. It's really a good opportunity for you to get a true Chinese experience from inside the local culture, and you can imagine how happy the children will be when you, an Englishman, teach them English.

    Looking forward to your reply.

    Y ours,

    Li Hua

47They went home and hunted through their own closets. The next day at school, they met Todd and asked him to come into the hall. Todd was anxious about being called out by the two boys. He wasn't smiling or anything. His reaction was perfectly understandable in the circumstances. "We are in the same grade, and I owe you an apology for laughing at you. I want to give something to you to compensate for it," Graham told him. He then handed a huge bag to Todd, inside which were clean shirts and shorts, plus a brand-new pair of New Balance sneakers. Todd was moved, his eyes filling with tears. And what Todd got was not only clothes, but also friends. He no longer sits alone at lunch. Now he eats with Garrett and Graham. "I have always been bullied in the past," Todd said. "Looking back on the day when Garrett and Graham called me into the hall, I think it is actually the best day of my entire life."
