    Searching the OED
How to use the quick search
The quick search bar can be found on the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) homepage and at the top of every entry page, and finds main dictionary entries, such as alphabet, break, xylophone. It also finds phrases and compounds listed within main entries, such as to look up or alphabet book, and different forms of spellings such as dictionaries.
    Wildcard searches
A wildcard is a symbol which stands for any character. The question mark?represents the occurrence of any one single character, and the asterisk * represents the occurrence of any number of characters (or no character at all) . Wildcards are useful if you do not know how to spell a word, or if you want to find several terms beginning with the same root.
How to use the advanced search
An advanced search is a full search of the entire dictionary text which is for readers who have logged in or subscribed to the dictionary. Advanced search can be especially useful for very specific searches. You can use the search area functionality to search by each section of an entry. You can also use filters to narrow your search to match certain criteria.
    Browsing by categories
Categories allow you to explore the dictionary through groupings of words in, for instance, a subject or from a particular origin. If you want to find all the Carribbean borrowings in English, or find the first word related to espionage to enter the dictionary, this is the function for you.
Further explore your search by using the options that appear on the right-hand side of the results page.
21.What will you use if you are not sure of the spelling of a word?
    A.The quick search. B.Wildcard searches.
C.The advanced search. D.Browsing by categories.
22.What’s the requirement of using the advanced search?
A.Registering for the dictionary. B.Matching certain criteria.
C.Searching with specific words. D.Searching with purpose.
23.Where is this text probably taken from?
    A.A dictionary. B.A brochure. C.A website. D.A textbook.

This year’s flu season is shaping up to be a bad one. The new type of flu virus is more severe than most. In addition many people find the vaccine this year to be less effective, and others are wondering if they should still get a flu shot. The answer is yes.
Each summer, scientists try to make a best guess on which variants (变体) are going to be more common in the coming year. They look at data from other countries, and then they make the shot to match.
Sometimes a vaccine doesn’t work well because some variants change too much. That’s why in any year, even when you’re vaccinated, you can get the flu. The shot is about reducing your risk, not getting rid of it.
“Less” and “more” effective are relative terms, so we need to focus more on absolute risks. In 2010, researchers published an in-depth analysis of all flu shot studies. They showed that when a vaccine was considered effective, 1.2% of vaccinated people had the flu, while 3.9% of unvaccinated people had the flu. That’s an absolute risk reduction (ARR) of 2.7 percentage points. In studies in which the flu shot was considered ineffective, 1.1% of vaccinated people had the flu compared with 2.4% of unvaccinated people. The ARR was 1.3% points.
Let’s say this year’s flu vaccine is even worse than we think. Maybe the ARR will be as low as 1 percentage point. That’s still not that bad. Given the millions who are likely to suffer from flu and the thousands of deaths each year, this is a big payoff in public health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that 9 million to 36 million people become ill with the flu each year in the United States. Somewhere between 140,000 and 710,000 of them require hospitalization, and 12,000 to 56,000 die each year.
No vaccine is perfectly protective in any year. But to minimize your chances of illness, yes, you should still get the flu shot this year, and any year.
24.What is the paragraph2 mainly about?
A.Why some vaccines are ineffective. B.Why people should get vaccines.
C.How a new vaccine is developed. D.How people survive flu in summer.
25.What can the ARR tell us according to the text?
    A.How dangerous flu could be.
    B.The risk of a vaccine.
    C.How flu spreads.
D.The effectiveness of a flu vaccine.
26.Why does the author provide the CDC’s figures?
A.To show many people suffer from serious diseases each year.
B.To show flu vaccines are sometimes ineffective.
C.To show flu is a major cause of human death.
D.To show vaccines can still save many people.
27.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To report a threatening type of flu virus.
B.To persuade people to receive flu vaccines.
C.To explain the spread of flu viruses.
D.To give an introduction to this year’s vaccine.
    C
For more than 60 years, Lego bricks (乐高) have sparked children's imaginations. Now, a new version of these toys is in the works. They’re Lego Braille Bricks, and they’re being tested around the world.
Lego Braille Bricks are designed to help people learn Braille. That’s a system of writing in which letters are represented by raised dots. People who are blind or visually impaired use their fingertips to read it.
According to the World Health Organization, 36 million people worldwide are blind. In the United States, it’s estimated that only 10% of blind children learn Braille. Lego Braille Bricks can help change that. The small dots on the bricks are arranged as Braille letters. Blind children can use these dots to learn Braille.
Lego plans to launch Braille Bricks next year. For some schools and institutions, Braille Bricks will be free. Each will contain about 250 bricks. Along with the alphabet, the bricks will feature numbers and math symbols.
The Danish Association of the Blind was one of the first organizations to come up with the idea of using Lego bricks to teach Braille. Thorkild Olesen is the president of the group. Olesen is blind. He says many teachers don’t have the tools and skills to help kids learn Braille. So they teach with audio tools, such as audio books. “Like any other people, we need to express ourselves in writing,” Olesen said. “Audio is great. But it can never replace Braille. Braille is the single most important tool for us in order to learn to spell correctly, write, and gain literacy like sighted people.”
    28.Braille is .
A.a new toy for blind children.
B.a new version of Lego bricks.
C.a writing system for blind people.
D.a kind of book for blind people.

    A.raised dots.
    B.numbers and math symbols.
    C.Braille letters.
    D.printed letters.
30.Through Lego Braille Bricks, blind children can learn about different ideas EXCEPT .
    A.art.
    B.numbers.
    C.math symbols.
    D.English letters.
31.Which of the following sentences is WRONG according to the article?
A.In the US, one in ten blind children learn Braille.
B.Lego will send Lego Braille Bricks to some schools for free.
C.Lego Braille Bricks will help more blind children learn Braille.
D.Many teachers are now teaching Braille with Lego Braille Bricks.

Just like happiness and sadness, anxiety is part of everyone's lived experience—but it's not always tolerated as such. “People often spend too much time and effort trying to rid anxiety,” says Dr Joel Minden, a clinical psychologist. “I encourage them to remember that anxiety is a normal emotional response.”
If you try to banish anxiety, all you're doing is putting it more at the forefront of your mind. But if you accept anxiety as part of life, you can learn to relate to it with self-pity or even with humour. This is a cornerstone of acceptance and commitment therapy(ACT), which has been gaining clinical validation, including by the American Psychological Association. ACT guides people to see their unpleasant emotions as just feelings and to accept that parts o£ life are hard. Sufferers are encouraged to begin a dialogue with anxious thoughts, examining their causes while also keeping in mind their personal goals and values.
This way of relating to anxiety has been a powerful strategy for John Bateman, the 52- year-old host of the podcast Our Anxiety Stories. When negative thoughts arise, he acknowledges them but doesn't let them drive his decisions. Over the years, Bateman has noticed that if he submits to his thoughts, they don't go away but dramatically increase. But if he recognizes them for what they are, just a passing thought and not a fact that needs to be acted on, they gradually go away.
Learning to live with anxiety is an individual process and one that requires trial and error to get just right. While acceptance is the first and most important step to take, some lifestyle changes have been proven to take the edge off, as well. Since tiredness, increased tension and stress leave us much easier to fall into anxiety, a well-balanced diet, sufficient rest and, especially, regular exercise can help us manage it better.
32.What may Dr Joel Minden agree about anxiety?
A.It goes hand in hand with joy. B.It should be seriously taken.
C.It is easily-earned experience. D.It is often improperly treated.
33.What can explain the underlined word “banish” in Paragraph 2?
    A.Ignore. B.Hide. C.Recognize. D.Control.
34.Why does the author mention John Bateman in Paragraph 3?
    A.To explain a strategy. B.To describe a phenomenon.
C.To present a successful case. D.To introduce a public figure.
35.What is advised to deal with anxiety in the last part?
A.Concentrating on the process. B.Making lifestyle adjustments.
C.Avoiding exposure to pressure. D.Learning to get things in place.

W: Well… I have a lot of experience helping people shop. I like to help people and I’m very good at finding things that they might like.
    M: Who have you helped?
W: Let me see… I’ve helped my mother, my aunt, and many of my friends.
M: I see. Well, you should know that it is difficult to satisfy our customers. They are busy people who want nice clothes, but don’t have time to do a lot of shopping themselves.
W: That sounds perfect for me. I don’t mind spending my days in stores. I choose things very carefully.
M: You should know that our customers have high expectations. You may find working with them quite challenging.
W: I’m prepared for that. When will you be doing interviews?
M: Well, today is Wednesday… So, I think we’ll start them from tomorrow. If you are chosen for an interview, we’ll call you within a few days.

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m pleased to announce the winner of the 2018 song-writing competition. As you probably know, every year, young songwriters from our town enter our annual spring competition held here in the beautiful Brook Theater. When local musician Fred McGill started the event four years ago, we had no idea how much it would grow. In 2017, over 100 people sent in their songs. This year the number of people who participated doubled. It’s wonderful to see the talent and energy of the next generation. Our judges were amazed by the musical skills they saw and heard. Congratulations to all the teenagers who sent in their songs. It was a difficult choice, but our committee has made a selection. Let’s clap our hands for Maryanne James! Maryanne, where are you? Please join me on stage! There she is! Maryanne, we loved the way you sang about everything from the colors of your garden to the eyes of children. Please accept this prize. We hope it encourages you to continue writing songs when you start music school in the fall. Finally, we’d like to ask you to perform a song for our audience.

根据Wildcard searches部分中“Wildcards are useful if you do not know how to spell a word, or if you want to find several terms beginning with the same root.(如果你不知道如何拼写一个单词,或者如果你想查找几个以相同词根开头的术语,Wildcards非常有用)”可知,如果你不确定一个单词的拼写,你可以使用Wildcard searches。故选B。
根据倒数第三段中“An advanced search is a full search of the entire dictionary text which is for readers who have logged in or subscribed to the dictionary.(高级搜索是对整个词典文本的完全搜索,这是为已经登录或订阅了词典的读者提供的)”可知,使用高级搜索需要注册,故选A。
根据第一段“The quick search bar can be found on the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) homepage and at the top of every entry page, and finds main dictionary entries, such as alphabet, break, xylophone.(快速搜索栏可以在《牛津英语词典》的主页和每个词条页面的顶部找到,可以找到词典的主要词条,如字母表、break、xylophone)”,第二段“The question mark? represents the occurrence of any one single character, and the asterisk * represents the occurrence of any number of characters (or no character at all) .(问号?表示任意单个字符的出现,星号*表示任意数量字符的出现(或者根本不出现字符))”,第三段“An advanced search is a full search of the entire dictionary text which is for readers who have logged in or subscribed to the dictionary.(高级搜索是对整个词典文本的完全搜索,这是为已经登录或订阅了词典的读者提供的)”可推知,文章选自网络。

根据第四段第三、四句“ They showed that when a vaccine was considered effective, 1.2% of vaccinated people had the flu, while 3.9% of unvaccinated people had the flu. That’s an absolute risk reduction (ARR) of 2.7 percentage points.”(他们显示,当疫苗被认为有效时,1.2%的接种者患流感,而3.9%的未接种者患流感。
根据第五段前四句“Let’s say this year’s flu vaccine is even worse than we think. Maybe the ARR will be as low as 1 percentage point. That’s still not that bad. Given the millions who are likely to suffer from flu and the thousands of deaths each            year, this is a big payoff in public health.
根据最后一段最后一句“you should still get the flu shot this year, and any year.”(你今年跟每年一样,仍然应该注射流感疫苗)可知,文章的目的在于让读者接种疫苗。故选B项。

根据第四段的“Each will contain about 250 bricks. Along with the alphabet, the bricks will feature numbers and math symbols. (每一套将包含大约250块积木,除了字母表外,积木还带有数字和数学符号。)”可知,Lego Braille Bricks除了字母表,还带有数字和数学符号,故选B。
30.细节理解题。根据第四段的“Each will contain about 250 bricks. Along with the alphabet, the bricks will feature numbers and math symbols. (每一套将包含大约250块积木,除了字母表外,积木还带有数字和数学符号。)”可知,盲人孩子们可以通过Lego Braille Bricks学习数字、数学符号以及英文字母。由此可知,Lego Braille Bricks不可以用来学习艺术,故选A。
31.细节理解题。根据最后一段的“He says many teachers don’t have the tools and skills to help kids learn Braille.

根据第一段中“'People often spend too much time and effort trying to rid anxiety,' says Dr Joel Minden, a clinical psychologist.'I encourage them to remember that anxiety is a normal emotional response.'(临床心理学家Joel Minden医生说:“人们常常花费太多时间和精力试图消除焦虑。我鼓励他们记住,焦虑是正常的情绪反应。”)”可知,Joel Minden医生对焦虑的看法是它经常被不恰当的处理。故选D。

Ignore.忽视;B. Hide.隐藏;C. Recognize.识别;D. Control.控制。故选D。
根据第三段“This way of relating to anxiety has been a powerful strategy for John Bateman, the 52- year-old host of the podcast Our Anxiety Stories. When negative thoughts arise, he acknowledges them but doesn't let them drive his decisions. Over the years, Bateman has noticed that if he submits to his thoughts, they don't go away but dramatically increase. But if he recognizes them for what they are, just a passing thought and not a fact that needs to be acted on, they gradually go away.(对于52岁的播客“我们的焦虑故事”主持人John Bateman来说,这种与焦虑相关的方式是一种强有力的策略。当消极思想出现时,他会承认它们,但不会让它们驱动他的决定。多年来,贝特曼注意到,如果他听从自己的想法,这些想法非但不会消失,反而会急剧增加。但如果他认识到它们的本质,它们只是一个短暂的想法,而不是一个需要采取行动的事实,它们就会逐渐消失)”可推知,作者在第三段提到John Bateman是为了提出一个成功的案例。故选C。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“While acceptance is the first and most important step to take, some lifestyle changes have been proven to take the edge off, as well. Since tiredness, increased tension and stress leave us much easier to fall into anxiety, a well-balanced diet, sufficient rest and, especially, regular exercise can help us manage it better.(虽然接受是第一步,也是最重要的一步,但事实证明,一些生活方式的改变被证明可以减轻压力。

故填who。
根据短语discourage sb. from doing sth.

作状语要用when, where, why。
故填who。

故去掉on。
本句为it做形式主语的句型:it is +n.for sb. to do sth.
    1.It + be +形容词+ (for sb.)+动词不定式这类句型常用形容词easy, difficult, hard, important, possible,wise等作表语,有时候为了强调不定式动作的执行者,常在不定式前加for sb,如:
It’s necessary for the young to master two foreign language.
    2. It + be +形容词+ of sb.
It’s very kind of you to help me with the work.
=You are kind to help me.
    3. It + be +名词词组(for sb.)+动词不定式,如:
It is not a good habit to stay up too late.
本句为it做形式主语的句型之一:it is +n.for sb. to do sth.故developing改为develop。
