Cantonese Opera is a theatre art that developed in southern China. It is especially popular in Guangdong, Guangxi, HongKong and Macau, but has been performed all around the world. With a history that dates back to the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, this beautiful art form has pleasedaudiences for hundreds of years

Cantonese Opera developed during the 16th century by mixing many different opera styles that were popular at the time. It combined forms of opera from the northern provinces with local performance traditions in Guangdong. The unique combination of these different influences created a new kind of theatre.

In the early days of Cantonese Opera, many performances were held on small stages in the countryside of the south-eastern provinces. As the art became more popular, performances were more often seen in city theaters. During the 20th century, Cantonese Opera became increasingly popular across the country, and many performers became quite famous.

Cantonese Opera is a wonderful mix of storytelling, music and fighting. The performances are often based on well-known traditional stories or events from Chinese history. The colourful sets serve as the background for these performances, and actors appear on stage in similarly colourful costumes and face paint. Fights are a common and important part of many shows with actors performing difficult and exciting martial arts movements.

There are four key skills in Cantonese Opera: singing, acting, speeches and martial arts. Performers are usually trained in each of these areas, which makes this a very difficult art form. Because of its long tradition and its importance in the development of Chinese arts and culture, Cantonese Opera was included on the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list in 2009.

Computers, smart-phones, and other machines are the perfect servants. They always do what they are "told". We usually "tell" them to do things by using a mouse or keyboard. But what if we could just talk to them normally and truly tell them what to do?

This type of technology, known as voice control or voice recognition, has been shown in films and TV shows since the 1960s. The Star Trek TV series, which debuted (首播) at this time, showed spaceships that could reply to human voice commands.

The 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey "starred" HAL 9000, a computer that human astronauts could talk to. It was mainly used to play chess and repair the astronauts' spaceship.

Real-world voice recognition, on the other hand, is used for more  everyday tasks. You might be familiar with Siri and Alexa, two examples of voice recognition software made by Apple and Amazon. They can  be asked to do many things, from setting alarms and playing music to placing online grocery ( 日 常 采 购 ) orders and activating household appliances (家用电器).

One of the nice things about voice recognition is that it can be used when we're on the go. When you're driving a car or walking down the sidewalk, it can be inconvenient or even dangerous to pick up your smartphone and type away on the keyboard. Voice recognition allows you to focus on whatever you're doing at the moment while still doing other tasks.

People with hearing disabilities can also benefit (获 益), as speech recognition software can be used to "listen" to spoken words and turn them into text that deaf people can read. Advanced speech recognition software can even hear words spoken in one language and then translate them into another language.
