Jason Ahn’s favorite parts of Marvel’s Iron Man movies are scenes showing inventions being developed. Many of these scenes are similar to the experiences he went through himself before winning national recognition for an innovative classroom whiteboard design.
For Ahn, 17, a rising senior at Ames High School in Iowa in the US, there was a good month’s worth of nights staying up until 4 am—before going to school the next day—during which he first gained the idea for an auto rolling and erasing whiteboard, or ARE Board. He then submitted it to the Raytheon Technologies Invention Convention US Nationals.
All that work paid off for Ahn in 2022 when he was among inventors from across the country to win awards at the competition.
In his advanced placement physics class—and throughout most of his time in school—he noticed his teachers struggle with having to write and erase the same notes for each of their classes; that was if they could even reach the top of their traditional whiteboards. However, electronic whiteboards are too expensive.
He made a working prototype (原型) of a whiteboard on a motorized conveyor belt system that can be scrolled (滚动) up and down. It is more time and space efficient than a traditional whiteboard. He wanted to make something similar to an electronic whiteboard but far cheaper and easy to use.
“I’ve seen my friends kind of joking, ‘Isn’t this kind of a step backward? We’ve evolved all the way to electronic whiteboards’.” Ahn said.
“In some cases, it’s good to keep the traditional aspects and characteristics of some fundamental tools,” because markers and erasers are more tangible (有形的) and accessible to people, he added.
One of the awards he won at the competition provided him with a patent lawyer to help him get a patent application with the fee covered. He’d be willing to sell a patent to a company.
Ahn thinks of things in daily life that might make the world a better place. “I’m making a notebook of all the ideas that I’m thinking of,” he said.
24. What about Marvel’s Iron Man movies interests Ahn the most?
A. Iron Man’s hi-tech suit. B. The hi-tech fight scenes.
C. The various hi-tech inventions used. D. The scenes of hi-tech products being made.
25. What inspired Ahn to invent ARE Board?
A. His teachers’ struggles to erase whiteboards. B. An electronic whiteboard he came across.
C. A motorized conveyor belt system he found. D. His cooperation with other inventors.
26. What advantages does Ahn’s ARE Board have over other electronic whiteboards?
A. It is smaller and lighter. B. It is cheaper and more user-friendly.
C. It is more futuristic. D. It is mobile and easier to use.
27. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. How to Upgrade Your Classroom
B. Teenagers Can Make a Big Difference
C. An Inspirational Inventor Creates Motorized Whiteboard
D. ARE Board—Whiteboard’s Bright Future
C
Have you ever wondered why you might be a little shorter than your friends or family? Perhaps you’re at the other end, sick of people asking “What’s the weather like up there ?”. Well, scientists believe the mystery of why humans are growing taller and reaching puberty (青春期) earlier is due to a sensor in the brain.
A joint research, carried out by the University of Cambridge, Queen Mary University of London, the University of Michigan, Vanderbilt University and the University of Bristol, showed that there is a brain receptor—MC3R—responsible for signals from food reaching a part of the brain called the hypothalamus, which was already well known for being responsible for keeping things in check like body temperature and managing appetite and weight.
MC3R not working properly tends to mean that people are shorter and start puberty much later. Professor Sir Stephen O’Rahilly, one of the authors of the study, said :“ It tells the body we’re great here, we’ve got lots of food, so grow quickly, have puberty soon and make lots of babies .” “ It’s not just magic—we have the complete wiring diagram for how it happens .”
There is an awful lot about the brain we still do not know. However, this research could lead to further development of drugs for children with delayed growth and puberty starting much later. But then, more understanding of the receptor won’t mean that we can make ourselves taller. That all still depends on genes, but it could help people with chronic illnesses who need to build up muscle .
“Future research should investigate if drugs that selectively activate the MC3R might help redirect calories into muscle and other lean (瘦肉) tissues, with the prospect of improving the physical functionality of such patients ,” O’Rahilly said .
28. What ’s the function of MC3R?
A. To analyze data from food .
B. To manage appetite and weight .
C. To keep body temperature in check .
D. To send food signals to the hypothalamus .
29. What can we infer from O’Rahilly’s words ?
A. Shorter people tend to lack MC3R.
B. There is solid evidence for the findings .
C. The findings are based on belief of magic .
D. MC3R takes charge of people’s inner feeling .
30. What will the researchers probably be devoted to in the future ?
A. Directions guiding people to gather calories .
B. Improvement of the fitness of cancer patients .
C. Drugs awaking the MC3R for building muscle .
D. Investigation into the selection of proper MC3R.
31. What’s the author’ s attitude towards this research ?
A. Objective . B. Doubtful .
C. Cautious . D. Enthusiastic .

Did you watch the popular TV series Meet Yourself (《去有风的地方》) during your winter vacation? In the TV series, the heroine Xu Hongdou travels to a village in Yunnan province and volunteers at a local cafe. She gets free meals in return. As the show finds a growing audience, volunteer travel—an old-yet-modern form of travel similar to Xu’s type of work—has attracted more attention.
Volunteer travel refers to taking a trip where all or part of the purpose of the trip is to participate in an arranged service opportunity to help others, according to Wise Tour, an online provider of tourist information.
It seems as if these long journeys could only be made possible in recent years by modern transportation. Nevertheless, volunteer travel dates back to the 1960s, when Alec Dickson and his wife Mora from the UK founded Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), an international volunteer organization.
Traditionally, the volunteer activities take place in a foreign country. However, just as what Meet Yourself depicts , more volunteer trips have taken place within the same countries or regions the volunteers originate from in recent years. Sanlian Lifeweek magazine commented that volunteer projects in rural areas are now attracting more urban visitors as a break from the fast and stressful pace of urban living. Yang Yan, a founder of a volunteer platform, told the magazine that it has indeed been a growing trend for urban residents to volunteer in rural areas.
People try volunteer travel for several reasons. By working voluntarily while traveling, travelers may make a real, positive impact on the world. The services volunteers provide can be through charities with lower costs for the communities they serve. Another benefit of volunteer travel is that it helps urban dwellers (居民) to get a taste of rural life. For those who are sick of urban pressure but can’t make up their minds whether to move permanently to the countryside, volunteer travel can be a solution.
32. Why does the author mention Meet Yourself in the beginning of the article?
A. To introduce a new way of travel.
B. To raise readers’ interest in the TV series.
C. To lead up to the topic — volunteer travel.
D. To show the popularity of this TV series.
33. What does the article tell us about volunteer travel?
A. It dates back to the 19th century in the UK.
B. Travelers can earn money on their trips.
C. It requires travelers to be highly educated.
D. It combines travel with meaningful work to help others.
34. What does the underlined word “depicts” mean in the fourth paragraph?
A. describes B. advocates C. generalizes D. comments
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. A new trend of volunteer trips.
B. Different reasons for volunteer trips.
C. The significance of volunteer trips.
D. The current development of volunteer trips.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Separation, money troubles, and transitional (过渡的) adjustments are all stressful events to the members of a family. Learning effective skills is key to solving the disagreements.
Schedule a time to talk as a group. When working together, you are more likely to solve family differences. 36 . Then, once tempers are cooled, everyone needs to plan to come together and think out a solution to the problem .
Focus on the issue at hand. When disagreements occur, people tend to bring up any and every unresolved issue they have ever faced with the other parties. This blurs (使模糊) the point of the discussion. Try to uncover what is important about the current problem. 37 .
Have everyone state what they truly mean. Direct communication is essential to effective conflict resolution. 38 . Such “I” statements allow everyone to express themselves while they show respect for other’s listening.
39 . Let another know you recognize, value, and accept his thoughts, opinions, or beliefs. Of course, your own opinions may differ greatly, but using validation (确认) demonstrates that you see the other as a human, worthy of respect. Validate your family members by saying something like “ I’m really glad that you feel comfortable enough to share this with me ” or “ I appreciate your willingness to work towards a solution ”.
Decide on a solution together. Once everyone has shared their needs, wants, and concerns, consider all the suggestions that each party has provided and look for a middle ground. 40 . If necessary, develop a contract or written agreement .
A. Seek professional advice.
B. Show respect for each person’s point of view.
C. Raising old misdeeds will not help resolve this issue.
D. Conflict in the family can affect everyone’ s functioning.
E. The first step is calming down and agreeing there is a problem.
