    A Real Hero

Mindy had a pet dog. She took him for a walk every day. Usually she took him to a park near her house. The park was next to a river. Many people took their dogs there. Almost all the dog owners knew each other. They often stopped and had a talk.

For Mindy, it had been a happy place until a homeless man moved into the park. He usually slept under a tree near the river. He was very dirty. He had no teeth, and his clothes were old. He even sometimes talked to himself. Mindy was a bit frightened. When she went to the park, she tried to stay close to other dog walkers. She was unwilling to meet the scary man.

Then winter came and it was cold and wet in the park. The homeless man didn’t have warm clothes and seemed as if he couldn’t bear to go through the winter.

One morning when Mindy was walking in the park, she encountered the homeless man again. To Mindy’s surprise, he was wearing a warm yellow hat that was quite new and clean. He walked towards her, smiling and pointing at his hat. Mindy was so scared that she ran as quickly as she could. “Mindy!” one of the dog walkers called out to her. It was Alison. Mindy ran towards her.

“Mindy! He is harmless! He won’t hurt you! He just wants to show you his new hat! He is so happy,” explained Alison. But Mindy still felt bad. “I’m sorry, but where did he get the hat?” Mindy asked. “I bought it for him. I saw it in the $2 shop. It is so cold and he is so poor. I wanted to do something for him,” answered Alison. “It’s very kind of you,” said Mindy with a smile.

Over the following few days the weather became even worse. It rained all day and all night, Mindy didn’t want to enter the park. Though she felt OK, she was still afraid of the homeless man. So she just took her dog for a walk along the streets outside the park instead.

One possible version:

One night when Mindy was watching the TV news, the words “Homeless hero saves a man and a child!” appeared. The newsreader explained how a car crashed into the river next to the park. Though people walking dogs in the park all ran to help, the homeless man ran faster than all of them. He swiftly jumped into the river without hesitation and helped the driver out of the car. Then he managed to pull the child on the back seat out of the car. He saved the little boy as well.

The car driver was moved to tears. He shook the homeless man’s hand tightly and said he could never have lived without his son. He then promised that he would give the homeless man a big sum of money in return to express his thankfulness. But the homeless man shook his head and refused. He said with a shy smile that he just did what anyone else would have done. After hearing the news, Mindy suddenly realized what a real hero the homeless man was. So Mindy decided to do something special as well.

Last winter, Linda went through a very messy divorce and was very depressed. So she quit her job and left Los Angeles, where she encountered her ex-husband in college. She flew to Boston on the east coast of the US. Later, she settled in a new neighborhood in East Boston. However, shortly afterwards, the company where she worked went bankrupt (破产). Suffering a series of bitter blows, she fell ill, a severe case of flu. She had to stay at home for the whole week, feeling extremely bad and hopeless.

Early one morning, Linda lay in bed, feeling painful all over. Then all of a sudden, there was an upsetting knock on her front door. Struggling out of the bed, she dragged herself to the window. There, outside, she saw a young lady carefully holding some leaflets(传单)and a TV set model. She knew of a large TV set establishment nearby and assumed a message was about to be gently delivered. “This is the last thing I need today.” She muttered to herself and hesitantly opened the door.

Coughing bitterly, Linda stuck her head out. “Excuse me, madam…” the young lady said with a smile. “I’m sorry but I am not the slightest bit interested in any TV whatever.” Linda interrupted her impatiently. “As a matter of fact, I am feeling terribly awful.” “Is there anything I can do for you, madam?” the young lady asked with concern. “No thanks, just leave me alone.” Linda then shut the door in her face. The young lady politely turned and left in silence.

I thought you may need this homemade chicken soup. Hope it might make you feel a little better. ”

Linda was surprised by this lovely action. After being refused so rudely, the lady still showed much kindness to her. A sense of shame creeping upon her heart, she could only force a smile with burning ears. But also, a warm current surged through her brain and body. Linda took the chicken soup gratefully, tears blurring her eyes and a lump in her throat. The lady wrapped Linda in her arms and patted her on the back. “It’s OK, dear. Everything will be fine.” Hearing these words, Linda felt a ray of bright sunshine lighting up her life.

“See you at Open House (学校开放日) tonight, Amy,” Evelyn shouted from the school bus window. “Don’t forget to ask your mom if I can come over tomorrow!” “OK!” I called back. I wished I could feel excited about my first Open House at my new school, but I was worried. What would other kids say when they found out my parents can’t hear?

And I wanted Evelyn to visit, but then she’d see how different my house was. My parents use a video phone so they can use sign language to communicate with callers. We also have a light on the wall that flashes when the phone or doorbell rings. Would Evelyn think my house was strange?

That night, Dad drove us to the brightly lit school. We stopped in front of the bulletin board in the hall. “Look at Amy’s picture!” Mom said, too loud! She does that when she’s excited, because she can’t hear herself. Some older kids turned to stare at us and I wanted to hide.

I led my family into my classroom and looked around. Evelyn was not there yet. Ms. Jennings walked over to us. I introduced her to my family and explained that my parents are deaf. “Oh,” she said. “Well, how do you say welcome in sign language?” “Like this.” I swept my open right hand in toward my body, palm up. She repeated the motion. “Thank you,” Mom said, smiling. “Nice to meet you.” Ms. Jennings looked surprised. “You speak very well,” she said. In sign language, I repeated what Ms. Jennings had said in case my parents hadn’t read her lips.

“Was it difficult teaching Amy to talk?” Ms. Jennings asked. “Not really,” Dad said in sign language, and I translated so Ms. Jennings understood. “She went to daycare with other hearing kids.”

Some of my classmates were watching us and whispering. Then I noticed Evelyn and her mom standing by the door. “Hi, Amy,” Evelyn waved to me and approached us. “I didn’t know your parents are deaf.”

I couldn’t think of anything to give a response, feeling embarrassed. I could feel blood rushing into my face and I was really eager to find a hole to hide myself in no time. Much to my surprise, Evelyn added that she thought it was cool when I talked to my parents with my hands. I breathed a sigh of relief. “Do you really think so?” I asked cautiously, still in doubt. Evelyn nodded with a serious look on her face. “It’s like a secret code. Would you teach me some sign language, please?” Staring at her with confusion, I hesitated.

“My new neighbor with a fantastic garden uses sign language too.” Evelyn explained. “Maybe I can surprise her with a greeting next time I visit her.” Admiration mixed with eagerness could be sensed in her voice. I felt a great weight taken off my mind. “Why not?” How foolish I was to have been worried about my family being different from everyone else’s. I turned to get my parents’ attention. “Mom, Dad,” I said, signing, “I’d like you to meet my friend Evelyn and her mom. Can I invite her to come over tomorrow?”

When Megan went into her local shop one day, a used jacket with gold thread was appealing to her. It was beautiful and cheap enough. She took the jacket home without a second thought. It was in such good condition that she couldn’t imagine why anyone would even sell it. She must have needed the money badly.

She grabbed her phone for a selfie(自拍)and stuck her other hand in her pocket. That’s when she felt something and took it out. It was a piece of paper with an address not far from her house. But something else caught her attention. It was a message that read: “Help my grandkids!” What could this mean? she wondered. She grabbed the note and reread the address. “OK, let’s do this,” she rushed out of the door with the jacket and got to the address.

A little kid answered the door. “Hello?” she said in a small voice.

“Hmmm… hi,” Megan started. “Is your grandmother or grandfather here?”

“We only have a grandma,” the little girl replied. Two other kids were standing there with wide eyes and confused expressions.

The house was untidy. There were tons of toys lying around.

The little girl guided Megan to a bedroom. An older woman was lying on the bed looking too pale. Megan said, “Madam, excuse me for coming in like this. But I bought this jacket and found a note inside.”

“Oh, thank you for responding to the note,” the older woman said. “I made a huge effort yesterday to reach the shop, sell it, and buy something for my grandkids to eat. But I was afraid that my disease would progress, so I wrote the note, hoping that someone would see it and help.”

Megan was puzzled. “I don’t understand. Couldn’t you call any family to help out?”

“We don’t have anyone else, and I’ve had to spend my pension(退休金)on medication that wasn’t working very well,” the older woman explained. “I’m sorry. I’m Erica, and I have chemical pneumonia(肺炎).”

“I’m Megan. Do you need me to call 911 or something?” Megan moved closer to the older woman. Erica shook her head, and tears gathered in her eyes.

One possible version:

Megan understood the older woman’s problemshe was simply scared of dying and leaving her grandkids behind without any help. She held Erica’s hand, nodding at her. “It’s going to be alright. You’re going to rest and get better.” Erica looked directly into the younger woman’s eyes, and her tears finally came. She said, “Thank you so much.” The kids were right outside and stared up at her expectantly. “OK, kids, we’re going to surprise your grandma! How about it?” The children smiled, nodded their heads, and followed Megan around. They cleaned the house. Eventually, the house was livable, and she ordered them some food.

Megan left their house that night, feeling great about helping out a strange family. She returned for several hours each day afterward. Luckily, Erica started getting better. Soon enough, Erica was back on her feet and gave Megan the biggest hug in the world. “You helped us although it really wasn’t your responsibility. I can’t thank you enough.” “Erica, sometimes, we all just need a little help. And next time you do, you don’t have to leave a note in a jacket. You can call me anytime,” Megan laughed. 1.

I first became conscious of my body image last year in fifth grade. One day I was walking by my mirror getting ready for bed and I noticed that my stomach looked big. I started to really hate that and think I was fat even though my family always told me how skinny I was. It wasn’t only my stomach—I started to think my nose was ugly and that my laugh was disgusting. I was even afraid to laugh or smile in public.

Then, in the sixth grade, a popular guy in my class named Luke made it worse. He told his table group that my body looked swollen in skinny jeans. I heard about it from someone else, but then Luke even told me to my face! I couldn’t stop thinking about what Luke had said. Even worse, I started to believe it was true, and I hid my skinny jeans all the way at the bottom of my drawer.

I know I cared too much about what other people said and thought about me. I guess I just wanted to be liked. In fact, I really wish I could have just brushed off comments like that, but I couldn’t change my personality and what I care about that easily.

Luke’s mean comment affected me in a big way. I lost confidence in more than just my body—I started to think that I didn’t matter and that I didn’t have a place in the world. To make it worse, some people also started telling me that I was not meant to be an author, which is what I really want to be. That especially hurt and I started to feel really sad all the time.

I hadn’t really told anyone how I’d been feeling until a couple of months ago when I got a call from my cousin. I’m really close to her, and hearing her voice and laugh made me feel so good inside. I thought about how I used to be that way too, and how I was so sick of feeling sad.

    注意:

    1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Then I started telling her and it all came out.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

When I went back to my bedroom, I looked at myself in the mirror for a long time.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Then I started telling her and it all came out. She seemed so surprised and said how special I was. She started listing all my good qualities, saying I shouldn’t listen to people who say mean things because they were probably just feeling bad about themselves or trying to look cool. Definitely, she added, I shouldn’t let them tell me how to feel about myself or my body. It was like a sudden wake-up call: focusing on what other people thought of me only made things even worse, and I must learn to love and accept myself for who I am.

When I went back to my bedroom, I looked at myself in the mirror for a long time. I saw what I had never seen in myself before, like my nice grey eyes, my cute smile, and the fact that I am beautiful in my own way. I know some people might still make hurtful comments again, and sometimes I may feel like I am fat again, but next time I will be prepared. I will only think well of myself even when I am feeling sad, and stand up for myself when someone puts me down. In my eyes, I am perfect myself—no one can change that.

It was only a dollar. Dylan Belscher noticed it on the floor as he sat at the back of his English class in March. When the school day ended, Belscher wandered back to the classroom. The wrinkled old bill was still there. He could have pocketed it easily without thinking twice. But he picked it up and brought it to his English teacher. Katie Mattison. “It wasn’t my money,” Belscher said, which he saw as a sufficient explanation.

Mattison, 54, was a little surprised he should turn the dollar in, knowing a lot of people would have just kept it. She suggested that Belscher tape it to the whiteboard at the front of the classroom, where she always put lost things. Maybe the dollar was the money for lunch or bustickets for the student who lost it. “You can always tell when someone is looking for something,” Mattison said. A day or two later, the school shut down for the holiday break. Neither the teacher nor her student thought twice about the dollar.

Hunter Rose, then a senior, was in an English class after break when she spotted the dollar on the whiteboard. It was a bit of a mystery, Rose said. After class, she asked Mattison why it was there. The teacher was still waiting for the original owner to claim it, so she replied, “I don’t know.” Rose took the tape from Mattison’s desk and taped a second dollar to the board. That got it rolling.

The sight of the two dollar bills, side by side, awakened something in Mattison’s students. They started asking about the purpose of the money. to which Mattison always gave the same answer: She didn’t know. At that point, it was true. Several other students, feeling it interesting, taped up single dollar bills. Mattison—an experienced teacher who recognized a phenomenon in the making-wrote the initial of each student on each specific bill, and she started to leave the tape beside the whiteboard. The effort snowballed.

One morning, Mattison asked her students if they’d like to use the money for something good.

    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Even with no specific purpose, many students wanted to participate. Belscher said everyone decided Mattison had some unspoken goal and that there would be some mysterious point at which she would reveal the secret. They figured larger donations could help them get there faster. One student taped a $20 bill to the whiteboard. Another student dug into her birthday savings and taped up another $20. The amount continued to grow over several weeks until it reached $175. As for the original dollar, the person who lost it never came looking. That left Mattison to decide upon the best resolution.

One morning Mattison asked her students if they’d like to use the money for something good. They all agreed delightedly, waiting for Mattison’s plan. She continued to ask the teens whether they minded if she donated the dollars in their names to a non-profit for cancer cure. Their answer was to tape more money to push the amount up to $320. Mattison, choking back tears as she recalled the moment, carefully took the cash off the board and made a donation before the beginning of May. That was Saturday. By Monday afternoon, eight more dollars had been taped to the board.

Sports are important in our family. Both of our sons were high-school athletes in our town of Verden. So I shouldn’t have been surprised when Lauren announced she was going out for the girls’ Dear Jack, Yours, Li Huabasketball team. But I was. At just five feet, one inch tall, our daughter’s lack of height wasn’t my worry. She has Down syndrome

My wife and I never told Lauren that she was different. We treated her like our other children. We didn’t want her to feel disabled or different because she had Down syndrome.

“I’m gonna play basketball, Daddy.” Lauren ran to meet me when I came in from work. She flew into my arms and lingered long in my embrace. Unlike some sixteen-year-olds, Lauren was outwardly affectionate (亲切的).

“That’s nice, honey,” I replied automatically, and patted her shoulder. Walking into the kitchen, I kissed my wife Laura on the cheek. Laura spoke slowly, her tone steady. “What Lauren’s trying to tell you is that she’s joining the girls’ high-school basketball team.”

Just as my wife’s words sunk in, I heard Lauren behind me.

“I’m gonna be a Lady Tiger,” she whooped, skipping into the room and throwing her arms in the air. She raced out of the kitchen to one of her favorite activities, watching cartoons on television. Everything that could happen flashed through my mind. What should we do? Parenting seldom had clear-cut answers, and bringing up a child with a disability was an additional challenge.

Mid-November, the season’s first basketball game arrived. I settled into a seat on the second row with the rest of my family. Before the game, cheerleaders (啦啦队) were running on the court, dancing and jumping. The game got off to a good start, but soon Verden was behind. Even after a rally (反弹) in the second half, I knew the Lady Tigers were certain to lose. Just less than two minutes were left, and Verden was down by seventeen points. Coach called a time-out. The announcer’s voice echoed over the public-address system. “Number thirty-three, Lauren Wray, in for the Lady Tigers.” My heart pounding, I watched wide-eyed. Lauren was in the game.

Lauren kept pace with the others fairly well. She was struggling to gain an opportunity to score. However, the opposing team scored again. With less than a minute left, the Lady Tigers were near their goal. I saw the coach shout and flash a signal to her teammates. Then something I consider sacred happened on the court. They passed Lauren the ball. She caught it and moved toward the goal. Lauren went in for a layup. Amazingly, the opposing team did not block her. She shot. She scored!

Applause exploded and the thunderous sounds echoed on the court. “Lauren, Lauren, Lauren,” shouted the cheerleaders. Instead of reacting to the noisy crowd, my daughter kept her head in the game. The final buzzer sounded. Verden lost by seventeen points. A few minutes later, Lauren joined us in the stands. “Did you see? I scored!” Her brown eyes shone as she wiped sweat from her forehead. “I made a basket!” I wrapped my arms around her and hugged her tight. Lauren was different. My daughter wasn't like everyone else. And I was glad.

Now one foot, now the other

Bobby was named after his grandfather, Bob. Bob was the one who helped Bobby learn to walk. “Hold on to my hands, Bobby,”his grandfather said. “Now one foot, now the other.”

One of the best things Bob and Bobby did was to play with the old wooden blocks that were kept on a shelf, in the small sewing room under the front stairs. The blocks had pictures of animals on them. Bob and Bobby would put the blocks one on top of the other very slowly, building a tall tower. Sometimes the tower would be almost finished. “Just one more block,” Bob would say.“And that’s the elephant block.” And they would carefully put the elephant block on the very top. But Bob would sneeze and the tower would fall down. Bobby would laugh and laugh. Then Bob would sit Bobby on his knee and tell him stories.“Bob, tell me the story about how you taught me to walk,” Bobby would say. And his grandfather would tell Bobby how he held Bobby's hands and said, “Now one foot, now the other. And before you knew it ...”

Then one day Bobby came home from school and his grandfather wasn’t there. “Bob is in the hospital,” Dad told Bobby,“He’s had a stroke (中风) and he is too sick to see anyone.” Months later, his father told him that Bob was coming home.

“Now, Bobby,” Dad said, “Bob is still very sick. He can’t move or talk. And he can’t remember us.”Bobby just nodded and didn’t say anything.

One day, Bob tried to say something to Bobby, but the sound that came out was awful. Bobby ran out of the room.“Bob sounded like a monster!” Bobby cried. “He can’t help it, Bobby,”Mom said. So, Bobby went back to the room where Bob was sitting.

“I didn’t mean to run away, Bob. I’m sorry,” Bobby said. “Do you know who I am?” Bobby thought he saw Bob blink (眨眼睛) his eyes.

“Mom,” Bobby called. “Bob knows who I am.”

“Oh Bobby,” Mom said. “Your grandfather doesn’t recognize any of us.”

Jesse and Vern used to be totally strangers living in two towns hundreds of miles apart. Their friendship started with an orange shirt in a bottle 22 years ago, when computers and Internet were not available.

8-year-old Jesse lived a simple and happy life in a small town with his parents. School was starting next week. The family would get Jesse a new set of clothing. Jesse was not so passionate for new clothes. After his father’s persuasion, Jesse finally agreed to the shopping. Jesse tried on a pair of new pants, new shoes, and an orange shirt. He didn’t like the pants and shoes much. But he did like the orange shirt.

School started, and Jesse put on his new orange shirt. All the other kids had new clothes too, but his orange shirt, in Jesse’s mind, was the most handsome of all. He wore it almost every day. Even when it was dirty, he would insist that it be washed and ready, so he could wear it the next day.

Time passed quickly and Jesse had grown over two inches. But his orange shirt was not growing with him. One day, his mother asked him to go to the grocery store to pick up some things for supper and reminded him not to wear that small orange shirt any more, which looked funny on Jesse.

Jesse ignored what his mother told him. In the store two little girls laughed at his tight orange shirt. Feeling embarrassed, Jesse picked up his groceries and hurried home. Getting home, he told his mother that he wouldn’t wear that shirt any more. His mother said, “Jesse, since the lovely shirt is too small on you, maybe someone else needs it.” “I really hope it goes to a lovely boy. But who can it be?” said Jesse. The next morning, Jesse’s father told Jesse that he had a good idea, saying he would take Jesse to the river.

Little Vern was fishing with his father in a small boat down the river.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

One possible version:

When they got to the riverbank, Jesse’s father took out a large plastic bottle together with the orange shirt. “Here’s my idea,” he said. “Let’s put your orange shirt in this bottle and float it down the river.” He also told Jesse to write his name and address on a note. Jesse said, “I hope whoever finds it will know it’s my favorite shirt. I expect to hear from them someday.” They put the shirt and the note into the bottle and tightened the cover. Away it floated.

Little Vern was fishing with his father in a small boat down the river. Suddenly they spotted something floating. They approached it. It was a plastic bottle. When Vern’s father opened it, he found a lovely orange shirt, just what he had always wanted for his son. Vern tried it on. It was perfect. Then they discovered the note with Jesse’s name and address. “It’s a miracle,” Vern said joyfully. Vern wrote a letter to Jesse. After so many years, they became lifelong friends, which was all because of the orange shirt.

After Justin Gordon came back from his last delivery, the kitchen was clean and empty and the lights were off. He was changing his clothes when the restaurant’s landline rang. He wasn’t supposed to answer the phone, but he was afraid it might be his boss, Mr. Kelso. So he picked up the phone and said, “Gourmet Restaurant, may I help you?” An old woman’s voice was on the other side, “I’m so glad you’re still open! I’ve just returned from a long trip and I have no food in the house. I really want to order some dinner!” Justin hesitated fora moment, then he wrote down the woman’s name and address and headed for the kitchen.

Fortunately, Justin was an excellent cook. In fact, his late father was a good chef and his dream was to become another, but he couldn’t afford to enter the Culinary Academy(烹饪学院).

The food was ready soon. He wouldn’t have time to clean up the kitchen if he was to de- liver the food quickly. So he decided to come into work early the next morning. He jumped onto his motorbike and headed for the customer’s address.

A woman in a wheelchair answered the door. “Good evening, Madam, this is a special delivery from Gourmet Restaurant. It is free of charge!” Justin said.

Early the next morning, the first thing for Justin was to clean up the kitchen.

He had nearly finished when Mr. Kelso walked in. “You’re not the chef! You’re allowed in the kitchen only if it’s to pick up deliveries!” he screamed, “you acted against the rule! YOU’RE FIRED!” Justin was close to tears, but he knew that he had broken the rule. There was nothing he could say more.

Mr. Kelso was extremely angry. When he went to dinner at his mother’s that evening, he told her all about it. “Some woman phoned in an order after hours, and he left the kitchen in chaos!” he scoffed, “can you believe it?”

“Yes,” his mother said, “I phoned him, son.”

    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

His mother told him what happened that evening. She came back home from her trip and there was no food in the house. She was so hungry that she placed an order even though she knew the kitchen was closed. But the food the young man delivered was a lot better than what the current chef cooked. In addition, he wouldn’t let her pay for the dinner. Mr. Kelso apologized to his mother for forgetting to do some shopping for her.

Mr. Kelso managed to find Justin and invite him to lunch at Gourmet Restaurant. Justin was astonished to see his former boss on his doorstep the next day. That day, Mr. Kelso and Justin had a lovely lunch. He asked Justin where he had learned to cook. Justin explained his father had been a chef and he learned cooking from his father. Mr. Kelso smiled and said that his mother loved the food Justin had cooked for her, and Gourmet Restaurant was taking him back as a part-time assistant chef on the weekends, what’s more, he would pay for his tuition at the Culinary Academy starting next semester!
