2022年体育单招英语真题阅读理解之A篇
I travel a lot in my work, and one of the things I dislike about this part of my job is eating alone. It always makes me feel lonely to see others laughing and talking.
After having room service three nights in a row at a Wyndham Hotel in Houston, I needed to get out. Although the restaurant opened at 6:30, I arrived at 6:25.The maître(领班)met me and commented on “my really being there early.” I explained my dislike of eating alone in restaurants. He then seated me at a lovely table and handed me the menu, “You know,” he said, “People don’t usually start coming to our restaurant until after 7:00. I wondered if you’d mind if I sat down with you for a while.”
I was delighted! He sat and talked with me about his hobbies. After about 15 minutes, he spotted some customers at the front desk and excused himself. I noticed that before he went to the front he stopped in the kitchen for a moment.
As my new friend went on to seat the arriving party, one of the waiters came out of the kitchen and over to my table. “My station is way in the back this evening. And I’m sure no one will be seated there for a while.” He said, “Do you mind if I sit down with you for a while?” We had a wonderful chat. After he left, out came one of the young busboys(收盘工).We had great fun talking about his experiences. Before I left that night, even the chef had come out of the kitchen and sat with me!
When I asked for my check, they all came over in a big group to my table and presented me with a red rose and said, “this was a nicest night we’ve never had in our restaurant”. And I cried! What had begun as a lonely night ended as a beautiful experience—for both employees and customer.

Sequoia trees are one of the largest and oldest of living things. Some of these trees are three thousand years old. The great sequoia tree grows along the western part of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Sequoia can grow to be almost 32 feet tall.
Another type of tree, called bonsai, grows in a pot in homes. A bonsai is a miniature (微型)form of a tree as it might be found in nature. Some bonsai trees have lived for more than 200 years.
To begin a bonsai garden you plant a very small tree in a small pot. As it grows, you cut back the roots to keep the tree small. Branches are also cut back or forced to turn in order to form them into a special shape. In this way the branches can be kept from growing too long.
A bonsai tree doesn’t grow to be more than 2 feet. Compare this with the largest living sequoia known, the General Sherman Tree in Sequoia National Park, which measures 275 feet tall and 103 feet around. Nobody ever cut its roots!
Because sequoias have been around for millions of years, dinosaurs(恐龙)may have even rested beneath them. Bonsai trees were first created about one thousand years ago in China and were introduced into Japan two hundred years later.
Would a sequoia make a good bonsai tree? Probably not. Unless, of course, you had a few thousand years to take care of it!

Summer is almost here, which means it is time to sign your children up for swim classes again at the Community Pool. Classes begin on Monday, May 1, and will continue throughout the summer. Fifteen swim classes are being offered. Each class lasts ten hours. A new class starts each week of the summer. Each class costs $20. The pool is big enough for six students per class.
Classes will increase in difficulty each week. The first week is for children up to six years old. The last week is for advanced swimmers who want to improve their race and endurance skills.
Students can sign up for as many classes as they like, but they must pass the skills level test. For example, students who sign up for Level 4 (Stroke Readiness) must show their certificate(证书)for completing Level 3 or must demonstrate the front crawl and backstroke. Children cannot sign up for a level they are not ready for. Children who have never attended Community Pool classes must show up April 29 or 30 for a swim skills evaluation. Instructors will rate the students and assign them to a particular skill level.
Swim classes are fun for all. Children learn new skills and make new friends. Parents get to meet other parents in the community. Swimming, like bicycling, is a healthy and valuable skill that, once learned, is never forgotten.
