Tears can ruin make-up, bring conversation to a stop, and give you a runny nose. They make you uncomfortable. Still, crying is a fact of life, and your tears are very useful. Even when you’re not crying, they make a film(薄膜)over the eye’s surface. This film protects your eyes.
When tears fall, they can make people feel less stressed or anxious; but we tend to fight them for all sorts of reasons. “People worry about showing their emotions(情绪), afraid that once they lose control they’ll never get it back,” explains Doctor Dorothy Rowe. “As children we might have been punished for dropping tears of expressing anger; as grown-ups we still fear for showing emotions. The fact is, no emotion lasts forever.” After we cry, the feelings that caused the tears often disappear.
Almost any emotion—good or bad, happy or sad—can bring on tears. Crying is an escape mechanism(机制)for built-up emotions. Tears help you when you feel you are ready to explode because of very strong feelings. How many times have you laughed until you cried? That is an example of how tears express feelings. This may explain why men, who are usually afraid to cry, suffer more heart attacks than women. Women cry. Men explode.

Culture(文化)shock happens to all people who travel abroad. Usually, there are five phases (or stages) of culture shock.
During the first few days of a person's stay in a new country, everything usually goes fairly smoothly. The newcomer is excited about being in a new place. This first stage of culture shock is called the “honeymoon phase”. Unfortunately, this often comes to an end fairly soon.
The second stage of culture shock is known as the "rejection(排斥)phase". The newcomer starts to reject the foreign country, complaining about and noticing only the bad things. At this stage the newcomer either gets stronger and stays, or gets weaker and goes home.
If you don't get through stage two successfully, you may find yourself moving into stage three: the "regression phase". The word "regression" means moving backward. In this phase, you spend much time speaking your own language, watching DVD from your home country, eating food from home.
If you get through the third stage successfully (or miss it completely) you will move into the fourth stage of culture shock: "recovery phase". In this stage you become more comfortable with the language and the customs of the foreign country.
Much later, you may find yourself entering the fifth phase. It is called "return culture shock" and occurs when you return home. You have been away for a long time and may find that you are no longer completely comfortable in your home country.

I think parents particularly want a Single recipe(良方)) for raising a straight-A child, and there's a lot of pressure, " he says
Here are some reasons why children are over-programmed. First, double income families have more money available for extra activities. The ideas of doing everything as perfectly as possible have affected (影响 )our ways of raising children, too. 2016年体育单招英语真题阅读理解之C篇
How many things can you see in the night sky? A lot! On a clear night you might see the moon, some planets, and thousands of shining stars. You can see even more with a telescope(望远镜)。
But scientists believe there are somethings in the sky that we will never see. We won't see them with the biggest telescope in the world, on the clearest night of the year. They're dead stars called black holes.
You might find it hard to imagine that stars die. After all, our Sun is a star. Year after year we see it up in the sky, burning, brightly, giving us heat and light. The Sun certainly doesn't seem to be getting old or weak. But stars do burn out and die after billions of years.
As a star's gases burn, they give off light and heat. But when the gas runs out, the star stops burning and begins to die.
As the star cools, the outer parts of the star pull in toward the center. The star squashes(拼压)into a smaller and smaller ball. If the star was very small, it ends up as a cold, dark ball. If the star was very big, it keeps squashing inward until it's packed together tighter than anything in the universe.
Imagine if the Earth were crushed until it was the size of a tiny stone. That's how tightly this dead star, a black hole, is packed. What pulls the star in toward its center with such power? It's the same force that pulls you down when you jump the force called gravity(引力). A black hole is so tightly packed that its gravity pulls in everything even light. The light from a black hole can never come back to your eyes. That's why you see nothing but blackness.
So the next time you stare up at the night sky, remember. There's more in the sky than meets the eye!
39.When will a star begin to die?
    A. When it bums brightly. B. When it becomes too hot.
    C. When it runs out of its gases. D. When it gives off light and heat
    答案:C
解析:根据文章第四段:But when the gas runs out, the star stops burning and begins to die.可知答案为C
40.What do we know about black holes?
    A. They are nice to watch at night. B. They have strong pulling force.
    C. They are heavier than the sun. D. They form the outer parts of sun.
    答案:B
解析:根据第六段第四句:It's the same force that pulls you down when you jump the force called gravity(引力)可知答案为B
41.What will happen when a star cools?
    A. It has a hole inside. B. It grows heavier.
    C. It loses its gravity. D. It grows smaller
    答案:D
解析:根据第五段第一句:As the star cools, the outer parts of the star pull in toward the center. The star squashes(拼压)into a smaller and smaller ball.可知正确答案为D

    2015年体育单招英语真题阅读理解之C篇
The Rockford police chief and some city officials want to put video cameras in all 100 police cars. They think this will reduce the number of lawsuits(诉讼)filed against the city. In the last five years, Rockford has paid out more than five million dollars to settle about 40 lawsuits.
The chief said, "If cameras had been in those cars, we wouldn't have had to pay any money. We're always pulling over drunks or drug users who try to fight the police officers or shoot them. Then they always say that the police started beating them first or started shooting at them first."
The cost of fixing cameras will be about$500 per car. The city council(市政厅)will make a final decision on the proposal(提议)next Monday. Ten of the 13 council members, when asked about the proposal, said that they liked the idea. One member said that it is money-saving and it makes common sense. If this is agreed, cameras can be fixed in all the cars within six weeks.
The police officers fully support camera use. One officer said that too many people think the police are liars; cameras would show citizens that police tell the truth. “The money that we've been spending on lawsuits will be better spent our more cameras,” said one officer.
The citizen response to the idea of police car cameras is mixed. One person said that the police should have started doing this years ago when video cameras were invented(发).
But an elderly man said that cameras might be misused. "These police are trying to stick their nose into everything," he said. He was going to attend the council meeting to stop the proposal. He hoped that other citizens would join him.
39.What is the purpose of fixing video cameras in cars?

    2014年体育单招英语真题阅读理解之C篇
A group of graduates got together to visit their old university professor. The conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and a variety of cups-some plain-looking, some expensive and some beautifully designed-telling them to help themselves to the coffee.
When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said, "If you have noticed, all the nice-looking expensive cups have been taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress.
“The cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. What all of you really want is coffee, not the cup, but you still would like to go for the best cups...And then you began eyeing each other’s cups.”

They are just tools to hold and contain life, and the type of cup we have does not define(界定),nor change the quality of life we live. 2013年体育单招英语真题阅读理解之C篇
Are men better drivers than women? The answer is yes...and no.
Men take more risks(风险). In studies, men as a whole are less careful than women, such as driving at higher speeds and closer to other cars, and not wearing seat belts. They even make risker turns and take less time when parking.
BUT... how someone drives doesn’t necessarily equal how well he drives. Men do seem to be better than women at certain driving tasks. However, this slight edge in ability doesn’t translate into better driving records. The kinds of accidents men get into are generally the result of their riskier driving. According to one study, men are more than three times as likely to be ticketed for “risky driving” than women, and more than 25 percent as likely to be at fault in an accident.
The ability to make good judgement is a powerful thing. Despite the research, scientists point out that it’s difficult to determine whether men are truly born to be better drivers than women, or if they’re simply more confident in their driving because they’re thought to be better, and thus show better skills. Similarly, the traditional view that women are weaker drivers may unfavorably affect(影响) their performance behind the wheel.
Women are catching up... which isn’t necessarily good news. Men may be responsible for more accidents than women, but the gap(差距)is getting smaller. Today, more women drive than ever before, which has the unfortunate increase in speeding, risky driving, and even death among women.
The take-home: Learn from the strengths of both sexes. Drive confidently and carefully. And don’t forget to wear your seat belt.
    38. Which of the following is a risk mentioned in Paragraph 2?
    A. Driving with careless women. B. Driving in another person’s car.
    C. Driving without seat belts. D. Driving in a parking lot.
    答案:C
解析:根据第二段第二句:In studies, men as a whole are less careful than women, such as driving at higher speeds and closer to other cars, and not wearing seat belts.可知,答案为C
    39. What does the word “edge” in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Improvement. B. Advantage.

When we think of Valentine’s Day we think of romance(浪漫) and couples showing their love for each other. What if you are single and aren’t dating someone? Valentine’s Day can be pretty lonely. As Valentine’s Day is coming soon I think it might be good to give suggestions of ways you might be able to have a fun Valentine’s Day if you are single.
Find a friend or friends who are single and plan something fun. Maybe you could go out to dinner or lunch. You could come up with ideas regarding how you could show each other you value the friendship. This is not only helping you but also someone else.
