Cavendish returned to London,England to live with his father. There,Cavendish built himself a laboratory and workshop. When his father died in 1783.Cavendish moved the laboratory to Clapham Common, where he also lived. He never married and was so reserved that there is little record of his having any social life except occasional meetings with scientific friends.

Spending his whole life in the laboratory and library,Cavendish's life was quite simple. He died in London on February 24,1810.But because he had a low regard for glory,he cared little about publishing his results and getting priority for discovery, and much of his work remained unpublished. It was not until the middle of the 19th century that some extremely valuable materials were found in his manuscripts(手稿),which proved that he had made a great contribution to the development of science.

The answer to traffic jams on the highways around airports could be electric air taxis. But this is not a futuristic dream.United Airlines is helping to make it a reality.
The carrier is ordering 200 electric air taxis, also called eVOTL planes.from Eve Air Mobility which designed vehicles for short distance-like going from city centers to airports-that can seat four passengers. The eVOTL planes take off and land like helicopters.
These vehicles that are due to be delivered in 2026 can fly from rooftop to rooftop. These types of vehicles are more environmental than using ground transportation. That's because the air taxis use electric engines that have no carbon emissions(碳排放),This will reduce pollution and noise levels by 90 percent, according to United Airlines and Eve Air Mobility.
"Our agreement with Eve shows our confidence in the urban air mobility market and serves as another important step toward our goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050,"said Michnel Leskinen.president of United Airlines Ventures."We'll get there not with empty gestures, but by taking the harder path of actually reducing the emissions from flying."If the company meets its goal of reducing its carbon footprint to net zero,it will be the first US airline to do so.
This isn't United's first try for environmental protection. The company started using bio-fuel(生物燃料)in flights from Los Angeles in2O16.It was the first airline in the US to promise to significantly use bio-fuel and this could cut emissions by 60 percent. From baby steps to flying ones, this airline is working on its commitment to the environment.Hopefully this is just one part of a global commitment to green the airline industry.
28.How does the author introduce the takeoff and landing of eVOTL planes?
A.By providing a long list. B.By using experts' words.
C.By making a comparison. D.By referring to a news report.
29.What can we learn about the eVOTL planes?
A.They make no noise when flying. B.They each can hold eight passengers.
C.They are designed for long distances D.They are friendly to the environment.
30.What can be inferred about United Airlines?
A.It promises to use bio-fuel in 2050. B.It has a pioneering spirit.
C.It stopped carbon emissions in 2016. D.It shows no interest in electric air taxis.
31.What might be the best title for the text?
A.The Promising Future of Air Travel Is Seen Now
B.More Companies Are Developing Green Technologies
C.Electric Air Taxis Will Make Getting to the Airport Easy
D.Electric Air Taxis Will Be Put Into Wide Use in the Future

"Public green natural spaces in cities are incredibly valuable, and even more so as temperatures rise and cities become more crowded,"said Ina Saumel,a principal investigator for the Edible Cities Network. She explained that Edible Cities Network's goal is to encourage people to get involved in their urban parks instead of only thinking of them as passive places.

For as long as I could remember.I had wanted to travel into the Amazon jungle.During the last summer break at university,I decided to travel there.I didn't have much money.so I found the least expensive flight to Lima.Peru.Once there.I planned on traveling to the town of La Merced. To get there, however,I had to take a taxi for the next fourteen hours.
By the time I reached La Merced,I found a hotel and asked the man at the front desk if there were any travel routes into the jungle. His simple answer was"no".In fact.there was no way to go farther into the jungle except by hiring a boat to travel down the Amazon. However,I found that an impossible choice.
At that point.I decided to go out and get something to eat.I had walked less than a minute from the hotel when a rainstorm swept across the town.I raced ahead to the closest restaurant to get out of the rain.
I took a table by myself and ordered a meal.I was very tired.I was also feeling sorry for myself.I had flown down to Peru and then taken a fourteen—hour journey in a taxi only to discover there was no way to get into the jungle.
Then.I saw an old man.He headed over to my table."Hi,my name's Fritz,"he said in English.with a smile.I introduced myself and we talked for half an hour.I told him my story. He could see I was tired and unhappy, and his eyes softened as he listened.
"Come with me and stay with me and my wife Helga at our home in the jungle. We have a coffee plantation(种植园)there. You can stay as long as you'd like.At six o'clock tomorrow morning.I'll pick you up at the hotel and take you on a trip into the jungle,"Fritz said.

W:Don't you think it is a part of international travel? If every country is the same.there won't be any fun to visit them.

Well.perhaps it won't surprise you.but I want to go to New Zealard and compete in the South Island Race, where you run, cycle and boat for 160 miles If the race sounds bard to you.remember it only takes 24 hours to finish the whole course.I say"only"because some of them go on for as long as ten days. That's really extreme.Id say that three days would be my maximum Competitors have to carry everything they need with them-clothes.food and drinks-and if they run out, they just go hungry and thirsty. On long races,my impression is that the greatest problem is to prevent falling asleep In fact,I've beard people go to sleep while they're riding a bike.

第二节
One possible version:
At 6:00 the next morning,I heard a car honking(呜喇叭)outside my hotel.I looked out and found Fritz sitting in a truck with a big smile.I hopped into his truck, and we were off.Within minutes,we were out of La Merced and into the jungle. The road quickly became a rough dirt road.Branches swept over the windows.and frightened birds took flight as we drove through forests. After a two-hour adventure,we emerged into a clearing with a wooden house and a large vegetable garden.
For the next five days I was treated as a special guest in his home.Fritz's wife Helga prepared meals for us.Fritz was more than anxious to show me around his coffee plantation.Their warmth and generosity were imprinted on my heart. When it came time to leave,Fritz drove me back to La Merced. As I said goodbye,I felt a wave of sadness wash over me.I realized I’d probably never see them again.I’d never forget the kindness of Fritz and Helga, and the amazing days I spent in their home.

During his lifetime,Cavendish made striking discoveries in chemistry, mainly between 1766 and 1788,and in electricity, between 1771 and 1788.In 1783,he published a study of the means of determining the freezing point of mercury(水银).In 1784.Cavendish determined the make-up of water, showing that it was a combination of oxygen and hydrogen.Cavendish's most celebrated investigation was that on the density (密度)of the earth. In 1798,he published a single famous paper on the density of the earth.

W:But where can I go?
M:You could go to an air-conditioned cafe and read for a while. You know, you don't have to spend much money there.
W:No,Most cafes around here only allow you to use their table for two hours. Then they will kick you out I'll be back in the house again.
M:Well.the downtown library is nice and cool. And you can stay there as long as you like.
W:That's the best idea.I'll go there this afternoon.
(Text 9)
M:Security again?I was checked when I left the airport in Shanghai W:Oh,the Los Angeles airport has to check, too.
Every country has its own security measures We are transferring through a new country·so we have to.
M:That doesn't make sense.Isn't security supposed to be the same everywhere?
W:No.In China, you can't take water but you can here.In the US,you have to take off your shoes when you go through the security cheek. When I went to Brussels, there wasn't any security check.Every country is different
M:I guess it makes sense that each country has its own rules for the checkpoints. But it is just a little bit annoying to keep doing this.
W:Don't you think it is a part of international travel? If every country is the same.there won't be any fun to visit them.
M:You are probably right
W:At least the security won't take us too long here.In Baghdad.they checked our cars and then us at the door and again when we went to the gates, and then another time when we got on the plane
(Text 10)
M:I’m going to talk to you about adventure racing as my part of the project. There were races as far back as a hundred years ago and some new ones were started in the 1970s and 1980s But people really have been doing adventure racing in large numbers since the early 1990s.Adventure racing is a mixture of different events—running, swimming, boating, climbing and cycling. Most of these races are held in mountains or deserts. The courses run over areas with little roads , few people.certainly no telephones or hotels. That makes a race more challenging.
