There is a story about a man who lost his legs and left arm in an accident. After the accident, only a finger and thumb on his right hand remained.
He was a brilliant, creative, and educated man. He had gained a lot of experience while traveling around the world, so he became very depressed after his accident. He was afraid that he would spend the rest of his life suffering and would no longer be able to spend his life in a meaningful way. Then, he realized that he still had partial function of his right hand and could still write even though it was very difficult. An idea occurred to him. “Why not write to other people who need encouragement?”
He wrote to the prison ministry about sending letters to the prisoners. The prison minister replied, “Writing to the prisoners is acceptable, but your letters will not be answered.”
Filled with excitement, the man knew he could write his letters. He began sending one-way messages of God’s love, hope, strength, and encouragement. He wrote twice a week, testing his strength and ability to the limit. He poured his heart and soul into his words and shared his experience, sense of humor, optimism, and faith.
It was difficult to write those letters, especially without hope of a reply. One day he received a letter from the prison ministry. It was a short note from the officer who monitored and checked the prison mail.
The letter said, “Please write on the best paper you can afford. Your letters are passed from cell(囚房) to cell until they fall to pieces!”
No matter what circumstances life may present, we all have unique experiences, abilities, and God-given talents. We can discover ways to reach others who desperately need messages of encouragement and strength.

For many people, moths(飞蛾)are dust-colored pests that eat our clothes and disturb us by flying around lights after dark. Not for artist Joseph Scheer. The pictures he creates bring out the beauty of moths, with colors, shapes, and patterns that have never been seen before so clearly. “Digital tools let you see things you'd never see just looking with your eyes,” Scheer says. Scheer's pictures have been displayed around the world, and one reaction is heard everywhere: “People insist,'No,that can't be a moth,'” says Scheer.
Scheer's work began with a moth hunt in the state of New York. Scheer would leave the lights on and the windows open overnight at his university office, and then collect the moths that had flown in. When the building cleaners at the university complained, he moved the hunt to his friend Mark Klingensmith's yard. They set up two lights shining over a plastic container on a white sheet. Then moths appeared from the darkness, flew into the sheet, and fell into the plastic container. “We got a different species every night,” Scheer says. “The patterns and colors were unbelievable.”
After the hunt, they used a powerful scanner (扫描器) to get detailed pictures of moths. Small moths presented special challenges.
The scanner records so much information that a single moth can take 20 minutes to scan. A scan of just two small moths fills an entire CD. All that information means the size of the picture can be increased by 2, 700 percent but still keep all the details and appear perfectly clear. You'd need a microscope(显微镜)to see the details shown in Scheer's prints.
Scheer's work is not only a new form of art. He has also made a valuable contribution to the record of the moths around him. He has helped identify more than a thousand different species. “Not from Alaska or the Amazon,”Klingensmith says, “All from one backyard.”
8. What do people mean by “No,that can't be a moth”?
A. Scheer is highly skilled at drawing.
B. The pictures seem too beautiful to be moths'.
C. The moths in the pictures are too strange.
D. They don't like the pictures of moths.
9. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Scheer's working environment.
B. How Scheer caught moths.
C. How Scheer found moths' beauty.
D. Scheer's friendship with Klingensmith.
10.The figures mentioned in Paragraph 4 show that
A. local moths have bright colors and clear patterns
B. a microscope should be used to prepare the pictures
C. high quality paint must be used to create the pictures
D. clear pictures result from much detailed information
11.What does the author think of Scheer's work?
A. It benefits research on moths.
B. It is a common form of art.
C. It'll get popular in Alaska or the Amazon.
D. It needs to overcome geographical limitations.

Every person has their own way of saying things, their own special expressions. Many everyday American expressions are based on colors.
Red is a hot colour. Americans often use it to express heat. They may say they are red hot about something unfair. When they are red hot they are very angry about something. The small hot tasting peppers found in many Mexican foods are called red hots for their colour and their fiery taste. Fast loud music is popular with many people. They may say the music is popular with many people. They may say the music is red hot, especially the kind called Dixicland jazz.
Pink is a lighter kind of red. People sometimes say they’re in the pink when they’re in good health. The expression was first used in America at the beginning of the 20th century. It probably came from many babies who were born with a nice pink colour showing good health.
Blue is a cool colour. The traditional blues music in the United States is the opposite of red hot music. Blues is slow, sad and soulful. Duke Ellington and his orchestra recorded a famous song---Mood Indigo—about the deep blue colour, indigo. In the words of the song: “You aren’t blue till you’ve had that Mood Indigo.” Someone who is blue is very sad.
The colour green is natural for trees and grass. But it is an unnatural colour for humans. A person who has a sick feeling in his stomach may say he feels a little green. A passenger on a boat who is feeling very sick from high waves may look very green.
Sometimes a person may be upset because he does not have something as nice as his friend’s, like a fast new car. That person may say he is green with envy. Some people are green with envy because a friend has more dollars of greenbacks. Dollars are called greenbacks because that is the colour of the back side of the paper money.
The colour black is often used in expressions. People describe a day in which everything goes wrong as a black day. The date of a major tragedy is remembered as a black day. A blacklist is illegal now. But at one time, some businesses refused to employ people who were on a blacklist for belonging to unpopular organizations.
- If you had your wallet stolen while doing some shopping, you may call it ________.
A. a white day B. a green day C. a black day D. a red day
13. Suppose Mr. Brown says his three children are all in the pink. This means they are ________.
A. gentle and modest B. fit and healthy
C. creative and energetic D. lucky and wealthy
14. When she got home and found nothing had been done by her husband, Jane was really ________.
A. blue B.black C. green D. red hot
15. In the follow paragraph, the writer might tell the reader something about ________.
A. more words about a colour, such as brown

One day, as he was walking from house to house as usual, he felt very hungry and weak. He felt that he couldn't walk even a few steps. He decided to ask for food at a house. So he knocked at the door. He was amazed to see a very beautiful young girl open the door for him. He asked the girl for a glass of water instead of a meal.
The young girl thought he must be hungry and thirsty. So she offered him a huge glass of milk. With a surprised look, the boy drank the milk very slowly. At once, he felt he was full of energy.
“How much do I pay you for this milk?” he asked the girl.
“I do not want any money for this,” she replied. “Mom has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.”
The boy thanked the girl from the bottom of his heart and left the place. As the boy left that house, he felt stronger physically. He thought he must do something else to help others.
Years passed by quickly. Both the boy and the young girl grew up. In the girl's youth, unluckily, she fell ill. She suffered from an uncommon disease. It was hard for the local doctors to cure her.
