M: OK. Please sit down. What’s the letter for?
W: I’m applying for an appointment as a visiting scholar at MIT.
    M: Oh, that’s wonderful.

I have hitchhiked (搭便车) around the world, but one of my most memorable and unusual hitchhiking experience happened in Africa. I was backpacking there by myself, and I somehow ended up in the middle of nowhere in Botswana. I was planning to travel to Namibia, but I had no idea how to get there because there was a national park between me and the Namibian border. I spoke to the local people and they told me that there were no buses, but it was possible to hitchhike. I got one to the entrance of the national park, where I then waited for my next ride.
I didn’t have to wait for long; the first car that drove past picked me up. It was a pickup truck already carrying loads of people, but I managed to squeeze in. The journey through the national park was exciting and we saw elephants and giraffes on the way. Then something un-expected happened, a hippo (河马) traffic accident. Yes, you read that right! There was an-other car driving towards us when a hippo that appeared out of nowhere ran suddenly to and hit the car heavily. Hippos are the most dangerous animals in Africa, and yes, they are often found to attack cars passing by. I had gotten terrible meetings with hippos before, but this was the first time I saw a hippo traffic accident.
We stopped to check that everyone was alright. The people were fine, but the hippo was lying on the ground on its back, legs pointing straight up. People were trying to turn the hippo around so that it could walk away, but it was so heavy that they were having a hard time. They finally made it and the hippo was only slightly injured. I don’t know what happened to the hippo later but it made my hitchhiking experience so much more interesting.
    24. How did the author get to the national park?
    A. By walking. B. By hitchhiking. C. By bus. D. By air.
    25. Why are hippos considered the most dangerous animals?
    A. They are the largest animals. B. They always ruin crops.
    C. They often attack cars. D. They often eat people.
    26. How did the accident happen?
    A. The hippo hit the car on purpose.
    B. The car hit the hippo accidentally.
    C. The truck hurt the hippo’s baby.
    D. The truck woke up the hippo accidentally.
    27. What does the writer think of this hitchhiking in Africa?
    A. He feels it is moving.
    B. He feels it is boring.
    C. He thinks it is a terrible experience.
    D. He thinks it a fun experience.
B 25. C 26. A 27. D
根据第一段最后两句话“I spoke to the local people and they told me that there were no buses, but it was possible to hitchhike. I got one to the entrance of the national park, where I then waited for my next ride.(我和当地人谈过,他们告诉我没有公共汽车,但可以搭便车。我在国家公园门口搭了一辆,然后在那里等待下一辆车)”可知,作者是搭便车去的国家公园。故选B。
    【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段倒数第二句话“Hippos are the most dangerous animals in Africa, and yes, they are often found to attack cars passing by.(河马是非洲最危险的动物,是的,它们经常袭击路过的汽车)”可知,作者认为河马是非洲最危险的动物是因为它们经常袭击车辆。
根据第二段第四、五句话“There was an-other car driving towards us when a hippo that appeared out of nowhere ran suddenly to and hit the car heavily. Hippos are the most dangerous animals in Africa, and yes, they are often found to attack cars passing by. (另一辆车朝我们驶来,一只不知从哪里冒出来的河马突然跑过来,重重地撞上了车。河马是非洲最危险的动物,是的,它们经常袭击路过的汽车)”可推知,河马故意的撞到了车上导致了这次事故。故选A。
根据最后一段最后一句话“I don’t know what happened to the hippo later but it made my hitchhiking experience so much more interesting.(我不知道河马后来发生了什么,但这让我的搭便车经历变得有趣多了)”可知,作者认为他的搭车经历非常有趣。故选D。
    C
Billionaire Sir Christopher Hohn expects the greatest “demand disruption (中断)” for oil since the 1970s shock to cause an increase in renewable energy investment.
He said high oil prices are “a positive thing” for the climate as the energy crisis results in a “dramatic speed-up” in decarbonisation (碳减排). “The whole world should now be focused on seeking alternatives, whether they’re renewables or hydrogen fuels. All of these things are far more economic.”
He pointed to the recent boost of EU (欧盟) for renewable energy funding, as part of a plan to reduce imports of gas. Even as oil and gas companies obtain record profits from the high prices at present, Hohn said climate-focused investors will ultimately benefit from the energy price shock.
“The oil price increase leads to plans for accelerated decarbonisation,” said Hohn. “I personally believe that we’ll have demand disruption as we had in the 70s, and that there will be a dramatic acceleration in decarbonisation. I actually view it as a positive thing.”
Hohn has pressured companies to give shareholders a vote on their climate plans. Spanish airport operator Aena and aircraft manufacturer Airbus improved their emissions (排放) tar-gets as a result. Hohn has also pushed for stricter regulation on corporate climate promises. “Corporate decarbonisation isn’t going to happen through voluntary methods,” Hohn said.
Hohn is also backing a new rating agency that will grade company emissions strategies, through his charity, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation. The Climate Action-plan Rating Centre (Climate-Arc) will analyse public company data and publish climate plan ratings.
Investors often struggle to analyse corporate climate plans. “Because though some organizations declare their commitment to environmental protection, they actually do the opposite,” Hohn said, “I expect a large proportion of companies will get graded F if they’re not doing enough. Even companies with net zero emissions targets have failed to set out plans about how to reach those goals. The impact is going to be a bit like, ‘the emperor has no clothes’.”
    28. Why are high oil prices a positive thing according to Hohn?
    A. They will reduce energy demand.
    B. They will bring economic benefits.
    C. There will be a shift to clean energy.
    D. There will be a reduction in energy imports.
    29. What does Hohn argue for in paragraph 5?
    A. Climate regulation should be stricter.
    B. Decarbonisation should be voluntary.
    C. Emissions targets should be debated.
    D. Climate plans should be informed to the public.
    30. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
    A. The method of avoiding being graded F.
    B. The suggestion about helping investors.
    C. The method of reaching zero emissions targets.
    D. The suggestion about reducing carbon emissions.
    31. Which would be the best title for the text?
    A. Energy crisis—a hard nut
    B. Energy crisis—a wakeup call
    C. Energy crisis—a cruel circle
    D. Energy crisis—a cause of economic depression
C 29. A 30. D 31. B
根据第二段中“He said high oil prices are “a positive thing” for the climate as the energy crisis results in a “dramatic speed-up” in decarbonisation (碳减排). “The whole world should now be focused on seeking alternatives, whether they’re renewables or hydrogen fuels. All of these things are far more economic.”(他说,高油价对气候是“一件积极的事情”,因为能源危机导致碳减排“急剧加速”。“现在全世界都应该集中精力寻找替代能源,无论是可再生能源还是氢燃料。所有这些都要经济得多。”)”可知,Hohn认为高油价导致碳减排急剧加速,由此会使得全世界寻找可替代的经济型能源,即人们将转向清洁能源。故选C。
    【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“ Hohn has also pushed for stricter regulation on corporate climate promises. “Corporate decarbonisation isn’t going to happen through voluntary methods,” Hohn said.( Hohn还推动对企业气候承诺进行更严格的监管。“企业的碳减排不会通过自愿的方式实现,” Hohn说)”可知,Hohn认为通过自愿的方式是无法实现碳减排,需要对企业实施更严格的监管才能推动碳减排的实现。由此推知,Hohn认为应该实施更加严格的气候规定。故选A。
根据最后一段中“Because though some organizations declare their commitment to environmental protection, they actually do the opposite,(因为尽管一些组织宣称他们致力于环境保护,但实际上他们做的恰恰相反)”以及“I expect a large proportion of companies will get graded F if they’re not doing enough. Even companies with net zero emissions targets have failed to set out plans about how to reach those goals.
由此可知,B选项“Energy crisis—a wake up call(能源危机——一记警钟)”符合文章标题。故选B。
    D
For centuries, people in Baltic nations have used amber(琥珀) for medical purposes. Even today, children are given amber necklaces that they chew to lighten toothache, and people put amber powder in some medicine for its special effects.
Now, scientists have found compounds(化合物) that help explain amber’s effects and that could lead to new medicines to combat antibiotic-resistant(耐抗生素的) infections. Each year in the U.S., at least 2.8 million people get antibiotic-resistant infections, leading to 35,000 deaths, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “We knew from previous research that there were substances in Baltic amber that might lead to new antibiotics, but they had not been systematically explored,” says Elizabeth Ambrose, Ph. D., who is the main investigator of the project. “We have now identified several compounds in Baltic amber that show activity against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.”
Ambrose showed interest originally while she visited a family in Lithuania. She collected amber samples and heard stories about their medicinal uses. The Baltic Sea region contains the world’s largest deposit of the material, which formed about 44 million years ago. Ambrose and graduate student Connor McDermott, who are at the University of Minnesota, analyzed commercially available Baltic amber samples, in addition to some Ambrose had collected. “One major challenge was preparing a similar fine powder from the amber that could be got,” McDermott explains.
Through trial and error, dozens of compounds were identified. Because these compounds are difficult to purify, the researchers bought pure samples and sent them to a company that tested their activity against nine bacterial species, some of which are known to be antibiotic resistant. “The most important finding is that these compounds are active against gram-positive bacteria,” McDermott says. Gram-positive bacteria have a less complex cell wall than gram-negative bacteria.
    32. Why do the people in Baltic nations give their children amber necklaces?
    A. They can help relieve toothache.
    B. They are beautiful decorations.
    C. They can cure common disease.
    D. They symbolize good luck for children.
    33. What does “combat” underlined in the second paragraph mean?
    A. Combine. B. Resist. C. Produce. D. Affect.
    34. What does Elizabeth Ambrose find?
    A. Antibiotic-resistant infections cause many deaths.
    B. Something in Baltic amber might lead to new antibiotics.
    C. People haven’t explored the real uses of Baltic amber.
    D. Baltic amber can fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
    35. What inspired Ambrose’s enthusiasm about the research?
    A. The success of former researchers.
    B. The encouragement of her family.
    C. The amber could be applied medically.
    D. The beauty of the amber she had collected.
A 33. B 34. D 35. C

Lisa Holman was a 45-year-old mother. One night, she told her family that she would visit and get dinner with one of her old friends in the area of Helena, Alabama. Helena was usually only about a half an hour’s drive from her house where she lived in Chelsea, Alabama.
When Lisa hadn’t returned home by 11 pm, the family started to get a bit worried because Lisa rarely stayed out that late. They called Lisa’s phone but didn’t get any answer. Next they texted her saying please call back as soon as she saw the text but never heard back. Her family knew that something wrong might have happened to Lisa.
The family then reached out to Lisa’s friend with whom she had dinner that evening. When they got in contact with her, she was surprised that Lisa had not come home yet. According to Lisa’s friend, she hadn’t heard anything from Lisa and just assumed that she had gotten home safely after she left to drive home at around 9 pm. Lisa left in fine spirits and was totally normal. She was not drunk or under the influence of anything so there was no concern for her safety of going home alone.
The family sat up all night wondering what was happening and their biggest fear began to sink in. They thought about calling the police that evening but the police typically don’t define a person missing unless there is no contact for 24 hours so all the family could do was sit home and wait.
It was a very long night for the whole family. The family sat up all night pondering if something happened to her. Was she kidnapped? Who would want to hurt her?
Early the next morning, Lisa’s sister Kathy, and Lisa’s 17-year-old son, Jackson couldn’t sit around waiting any longer and decided to go looking for Lisa.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
They drove along the route that Lisa would take after dinner for any clues. In the beginning, they saw nothing that stood out when they were driving. They wondered if this was a big waste of time. But a few minutes later, Jackson spotted what looked like a car. The car looked as if it had crashed off the side of the road, so he told his aunt to pull over. Jackson and Kathy began calling out Lisa’s name in the hope that they would hear a response. However, they heard nothing so they decided to go in the woods.
As they got closer, they realized it was Lisa’s car. However, they didn’t find Lisa in the car. Based on the condition of Lisa’s car, Kathy thought it was a bad crash. Therefore, they started looking around the area for Lisa thinking she might have been thrown out of the car on impact. Suddenly, Jackson found a woman lying on the ground nearby. It turned out to be Lisa, but she had no consciousness. They called 911 immediately, and Lisa was sent to the hospital a few minutes later. Fortunately, Lisa was not seriously injured and recovered well in hospital.
