At the age of 17 years 64 days, Mack Rutherford has become the youngest person to fly around the world alone! Mack’s journey around the world lasted five months and he flew across 52 countries in total. His record-breaking flight began in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, on 23 March, 2022. He was 16 years old when he took off and celebrated his 17th birthday by himself in his plane.
Mack faced many challenges during his adventure. Because of his small-sized aircraft, he had to land whenever the weather got too rough. However, at some points he literally (确实地) couldn’t land, such as when flying non-stop for 10 hours over an ocean. At other points, he faced extremely hot weather, such as in Dubai. In Sudan, a country in Africa, Mack also faced sandstorms which made it hard for him to see where he was going. Mack battled strong winds and pouring rain during his flight, but he never stopped smiling, joking and updating his flowers on his social media account along the way, and managed to expertly pilot his plane to safety.
And if Mack’s surname “Rutherford” sounds familiar, it’s because his elder sister Zara also flew around the world earlier this year, and still holds the female version of the record! The Rutherford siblings (兄弟姐妹) were inspired by their parents to become pilots. “I have known for certain I wanted to fly since I was eleven,” Mack said, “My dad Sam is a professional ferry pilot, my mum Beatrice is a recreational private pilot.”
Mack hopes to inspire young people to begin working towards their own goals, “No matter what background you have, I believe it is never too early to work towards your dreams and you shouldn’t limit yourself by others’ expectations.” With both feet firmly back on the ground now, it’s time for Mack to turn his attention towards catching up on his schoolwork!
    4. What can we know about Mack’s flight?
    A. It began when he was 17 years 64 days old.
    B. It made him the youngest person to fly alone.
    C. It was a successful record-breaking attempt.
    D. It took off in the capital of his home country.
    5. What challenges did Mack face?
    A. Limitation of flight hours. B. Darkness and safety issues.
    C. Loneliness of flying alone. D. Bad weather and long distance.
    6. Why did Mack and his sister want to be pilots?
    A. To model themselves on their parents.
    B. To encourage each other to dream big.
    C. To serve as examples for their siblings.

In today’s world, cultural heritage—a term Yale University President Peter Salovey referred to as “the record of humanity”—is increasingly under attack by threats ranging from climate change, theft, mass tourism, and war. Historic buildings, works of art, traditions, and even local languages are disappearing at an increasingly rapid rate.
Yale is leading a new organization, the Global Consortium for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (GCPCH), to work on the preservation of cultural heritage. The first official meeting of the organization took place in Milan, Italy, which gathered 36 international university officials and experts from around the world to determine next steps for advancing GCPCH’s mission (使命).

More specifically, GCPCH will create a map of education programs and field experiences, research projects, and funding sources.
The two-day meeting of GCPCH was hosted by Bocconi University. It kicked off with an address by UNESCO Director—General Irina Bokova. “Knowledge-sharing gets all stakeholders (有利益关系者)involved at a global level,”said Bokova in her inspiring speech. “Together we need to strengthen the networks and build more bridges between all actors,”
Stefano Baia Curioni, vice-president of ASK Research Center of Bocconi University, commented on what an honor it was for Bocconi to host the meeting. “It is with great pleasure that we gather such a set of leaders who bring so many valuable points of view on challenges related to the preservation of cultural heritage,” Baia Curioni said. “We know how important the work of this body is to advancing our collective work, and are honored to support such efforts.”
    8. Why is cultural heritage in need of protection?

Poaching (偷猎) is the leading threat to many of Africa’s species. It is reported that over the last ten years, a $23 billion global black market for illegal wildlife products has formed, and then the problem has turned into a race against extinction.
This new challenge means that new methods are needed. Luckily, WWF has been able to start the Wildlife Grime Technology Project (WCTP) to explore technological solutions to poaching. Through the WCTP, WWF set out to create an umbrella of technology tools to support rangers (护林人) in their anti-poaching efforts. A number of technologies have been tested over the years with different degrees of success, among which the thermal camera (热传感相机) has won its fame.
Poachers primarily operate at night under cover of darkness, getting into parks and reserves without being noticed. Some are killing wildlife for personal profit, while others are armed and backed by organized crime. Often equipped with little more than flashlights, government and community rangers have no chance of stopping them.
But what if park rangers could see in the dark? In an attempt to find a technology that can help rangers “see” at night, the WCTP identified thermal cameras as a solution. The technology has completely changed the way rangers operate at night. Since they began to use the camera in 2016, the reserve of Lake Nakuru has not had any elephants poached over the past 6 years. In Kenya’s 580-square-mile Maasai Mara National Reserve, long-range thermal cameras mounted on ranging vehicles allowed rangers to set up mobile outposts where poachers may appear. Since 2016, Mara Conservancy rangers have caught more than 300 poachers with the help of the camera.
    12. What challenge are wildlife species faced with due to poaching?
    A. They are losing their natural habitats.
    B. They are facing the danger of dying out.
    C. They are forced to give performances.
    D. They are sold to black markets for money.
    13. What problem did rangers have in their effort to protect wildlife?
    A. Poachers are well-organized.
    B. They don’t have flashlights to see things clearly.
    C. Poachers are armed with weapons.
    D. They have difficulty identifying poachers at night.
    14. How did WWF help rangers?
    A. It allowed them to drive ranging vehicles.
    B. It set up watchtowers for them.
    C. It equipped them with high-tech cameras.
    D. It observed their way of ranging.
    15. What can be a suitable title for die text?
    A. New Challenges Rangers Are Faced with
    B. Technology Supports Wildlife Protection
    C. Poachers Punished for Illegal Businesses
    D. Poaching—A Crime that Must Stop Now
B 13. D 14. C 15. B
根据第一段“It is reported that over the last ten years, a $23 billion global black market for illegal wildlife products has formed, and then the problem has turned into a race against extinction.”(据报道,在过去的十年里,一个价值230亿美元的非法野生动物产品的全球黑市已经形成,然后这个问题已经变成了一场与野生动物灭绝的竞赛。)
根据第三段中“Often equipped with little more than flashlights, government and community rangers have no chance of stopping them.”(政府和社区护林员通常只配备了手电筒,根本没有机会阻止他们。)、第四段中“But what if park rangers could see in the dark?”(但如果公园管理员能在黑暗中看到东西呢?)
根据第二段“Through the WCTP, WWF set out to create an umbrella of technology tools to support rangers (护林人)in their anti-poaching efforts. A number of technologies have been tested over the years with different degrees of success, among which the thermal camera (热传感相机)has won its fame.”(通过WCTP,WWF开始创建一个技术工具的保护伞,以支持护林员反偷猎的努力。 和最后一段“In an attempt to find a technology that can help rangers “see” at night, the WCTP identified thermal cameras as a solution. ”(为了找到一种可以帮助护林员在夜间“看到”的技术,WCTP确定热感相机是一种解决方案。)可知,WWF通过WCTP为护林员配备了高科技的热传感相机,有效地阻止了偷猎行为,保护了野生动物。故选C。
    【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Through the WCTP, WWF set out to create an umbrella of technology tools to support rangers (护林人) in their anti-poaching efforts. A number of technologies have been tested over the years with different degrees of success, among which the thermal camera (热传感相机) has won its fame.”(通过WCTP,WWF开始创建一个技术工具的保护伞,以支持护林员反偷猎的努力。

Learning a language doesn’t happen in a day. ____16____ To get to the point when you can communicate with native speakers, you should pay attention to the following top tips given by successful language learners.
•Study a little bit every day but efficiently
When you organize to learn a lot of vocabulary or study several grammar patterns that are pretty challenging, your mind can’t take all of them simultaneously (同时地). Therefore, it is better to start with little steps and learn a little bit every day. It is often more efficient to learn 10 new words every day instead of learning 100 new words in a day. ____17____
•Don’t be afraid of making mistakes
No one likes making mistakes. It affects your confidence and you are embarrassed (尴尬的) especially if there are more people around you. But when you learn a foreign language, making mistakes is something quite normal and expected. If you make mistakes, it isn’t the end of the world. Try to learn from your mistakes. ____18____ Look at them as a learning tool that helps you never make those mistakes again.
    • Track Your Progress
Checking weekly or monthly progress against your language goals is highly-recommended. You might track the sentence structures learned, the phrases memorized, or the lectures followed. Being aware of your progress can help you see how much your efforts pay off. ____19____ This strategy will keep you motivated (受到激励的) to continue learning.
____20____ You, just like them, one day can be proud of yourself and your achievements in language learning.
    A. Make them useful experience.
    B. Try hard, and you will finally succeed.
    C. It takes a lot of time, organization, and effort.

    E. It is not only challenging, but also full of fun when you enjoy it.
    F. You can also treat yourself with a small gift when you reach a new level.
    G. The previous tips are from successful language learners who gladly shared them with you.
C 17. D 18. A 19. F 20. G
上文“Learning a language doesn’t happen in a day. (学会一门语言不是一天就能完成的)”可知,作者认为语言一天是学不好的,反言之,学习语言需要付出很多时间精力。选项C“It takes a lot of time, organization, and effort. (这需要大量的时间、安排和努力)”承接上文,指出学习语言需要大量时间,安排和努力。故选C项。
    【17题详解】
上文“It is often more efficient to learn 10 new words every day instead of learning 100 new words in a day. (每天学习10个新词通常比一天学习100个新词更有效)”可知,作者认为坚持每天学习,可以少量,这样会比较有效。选项D“You won’t remember all the 100 words, after all. (毕竟,你不会记住所有的100个单词)”承接上文,指出,即使一天安排特别多得学习,但是可能根本就不会掌握好。故选D项。
    【18题详解】
上文“If you make mistakes, it isn’t the end of the world. Try to learn from your mistakes. (如果你犯了错误,那不是世界末日。试着从错误中吸取教训)”可知,作者认为语言学习者要善于从错误中吸取教训。选项A“Make them useful experience. (使它们成为有用的经验)”承接上文,指出别被错误打倒,要把错误当成经验教训,符合语境。故选A项。
下文“This strategy will keep you motivated (受到激励的) to continue learning. (这一策略将激励你继续学习)”可知,this strategy“这一策略”能激励人学习,但究竟为何策略,需要去上文找寻。选项F“You can also treat yourself with a small gift when you reach a new level. (当你达到一个新的水平时,你也可以给自己一份小礼物)”指出了一个激励自己的小策略,即购买礼物,下文是对这句话的延续。故选F项。
    【20题详解】
下文“You, just like them, one day can be proud of yourself and your achievements in language learning. (你,就像他们一样,有一天可以为自己和你在语言学习方面的成就感到骄傲)”可知,作者在本章结尾处,鼓励读者学习上文提及的学习策略,那读者有朝一日也能成为成功的语言学习者,但此处“成功的语言学习者”是通过代词them“他们”指代的,故前文肯定会提到them指代的名词。选项G“The previous tips are from successful language learners who gladly shared them with you. (前面的提示来自成功的语言学习者,他们很乐意与你分享)”指出前文的提示建议来自成功的语言学习者,即下文them指代的对象,因此下文是对这句话的延续。故选G项。
