Are children becoming addicted to the Internet?
Children are becoming addicted to the Internet and for many it is one drug that can’t be beaten. Not all children,but an alarming number of them are being swept up in this age of digital information.
Websites like MySpace,YouTube and Face-book,are becoming so popular that many kids can’t help being addicted to them just in order to fit. Why not become part of a society where you judge by how many friends on a friend list? What has become of the world,when instead of calling your best friend on the phone you send them a message electronically and wait around for hours to see if they get on and read it? Often on the web there just aren’t enough adults setting kids straight and too many teenagers are causing trouble.
However,it is biased to claim all kids are addicted,or even that all kids who are addicted to the web are negatively affected by it. While the web can be a large waste pool of negative influence,it is also a wealth of positive knowledge, friendly social networking,and even gateways to future employment. Perhaps it is not so important whether or not a child is addicted to the web and more important that parents know exactly what the kids are doing there.
Many computers have optional parent controls that allow parents to block the children from entering certain types of sites,or even individual ones. Such programs are unfortunately not used enough by today’s parents,who in many cases are caught up on computers themselves. All one needs to do is google search parental controls and you will be provided with any number of companies that can help with programs for tracing child activities and,if necessary,limit time spent on the Internet.

Talking to your children about the misinfor-mation they may find online is a great idea. Children don’t always have the judgment or critical thinking skills to test what they read or watch, but they’ll develop these abilities quickly if you help them figure out how to separate fact from fiction. 1
Don’t wait for your kids to approach you with questions—instead,take a few minutes to sit down with them. 2 With everything going on in the world,remind your kids that they might be seeing a lot of confusing,false information going around on social media and other parts of the web.
It’s a good idea to turn news reports and TV shows into teachable moments. 3 Take a TV show or newspaper article and transform it into a helpful,easy way to understand what misinformation is,and how to avoid it.
Misinformation can be really upsetting and stressful for your kids to think about. Let them know that you’re always available to listen and answer their questions if they’re feeling confused.

5 Remind your kids to be on the lookout for strange-looking websites,like those ending with“co”. Tell them to read through the headline. If it has a lot of mistakes,or if it’s written in all capital letters,there’s a good chance it might be misinformation. Additionally,introduce your kids to sites like Google,Wikipedia,and Snopes,which are quick and easy ways to fact-check information.
