In order to kill time, many people have been trying to cope with the boredom by reading books, others have perfected their cooking skills and many others have tried their hands at craft projects, including tie dyeing (扎染).
Whether you think tie-dye is totally stylish or not your style, the unique print from the 1960s is back in a major way. It’s become a hot fashion trend.
“The last several years have seen the resurgence in craftsmanship and handmade goods, popularizing the hobbies in the 1960s (weaving, tie-dyeing), but in a modern way. People would connect with these handmade objects to feel connected to nature,” Stitch Fix color expert Ryen Anderson said to Today. Online searches for “how to crumple (压皱) tie-dye”, a popular technique, are u by 376 percent on Pinterest.
This homestyle creation can easily be made at home. The only things we need to prepare include fabric. light-colored clothes, dye, rubber, and water. In tie-dye, the fabric is colored by tying several parts of the fabric before dying to give certain color effects. While this seems relatively simple, it takes multiple steps and washes.
Some people make tie-dye adjust old-fabrics in an innovative way. Some others use tie-dye technique to create a new pattern as the color of their clothes fades. The typical current trend is that people use natural coloring for tie-dye and combine it with doodles (涂鸦) and natural printing ( eco-printing) by abstracting colors from the leaves.
The dyeing technique has deep roots from Africa. Many immigrants from various African countries brought their skills to the United States during the 1700s to 1800s. The popularity of tie-dye then was quite influential in the 1960s or commonly referred to as “flower power” generation. Tie-dye became a symbol in that times.

“To explore further and to learn about the solar system we live in, we need to take advantage of what’s on the Moon, so we don’t have to take everything with us,” said Jacob Bleacher, the Chief Exploration Scientist supporting NASA’s Artemis program at NASA Headquarters in Washington. Scientists at the University of Florida have made a breakthrough discovery — decades in the making — that could both enable further space exploration and benefit humanity. “Here we are, 50 years later, completing experiments that were started back in the Apollo labs,” said Robert Ferl, a professor of this university.
Arabidopsis, native to Africa, is a relative of vegetables like broccoli (西兰花). Due to its small size and ease of growth, it is one of the most studied plants in the world. Space scientists are doing research on how it grows in space.
To grow the Arabidopsis, the scientific team used samples collected on the Apollo 11, 12, and 17 missions, with only a gram of regolith (表土) from the Moon given to each plant. The team added water and then seeds to the samples. They then put them into boxes in a clean room. A nutrient solution was added daily. Every plant looked the same up until about day six. After day six, however, it was clear that the plants were not as energetic as the control group plants growing in volcanic ash, and the plants were growing differently depending on which type of sample they were in. The plants grew more slowly and had poor roots and leaves. After 20 days, just before the plants started to flower, the team harvested the plants and studied them.
The team found the plants reacted differently depending on which sample — each collected from different areas on the Moon — was used. Plants grown in the Apollo 11 samples were not as strong as the other two sets. Nevertheless, the plants did grow.
This research opens the door to someday growing more plants rich in nutrition in habitats on the Moon. Plants are what enable us to be explorers.
    8. What can be inferred from the first paragraph?
    A. It took 50 years to complete building the Apollo labs.
    B. More labs will be built on the Moon in half a century.
    C. Some supplies may be produced on the Moon in the future.
    D. The conservation of the Moon helps explore the solar system.
    9. Why is Arabidopsis a most studied plant?
    A. It is productive. B. It is easy to plant.
    C. It is rich in nutrition. D. It is harvested conveniently.
    10. How is the third paragraph developed?
    A. By giving examples.
    B. By following space order.
    C. By presenting procedures.
    D. By analyzing research findings.
    11. Which section of a website is the text most likely from?
    A. Wildlife. B. Education. C. Travel. D. Research.
    D
Nine milu deer babies were born in Daqing Mountain National Nature Reserve in April, after 27 deer were relocated in September from two reserves in Nanhaizi, Beijing, and Dafeng, Jiangsu Province.
The milu deer have been brought back from the edge of complete extinction in China since the mid-1980s. The National Forestry and Grassland Administration launched the ambitious conservation program in 2019 to expand the habitat of the species. Experts came to the Daqing nature reserve for inspection, and an area with plenty of food and water was chosen to release (放养) the deer.
For Ma, who works at the Daqing Mountain National Nature Reserve’s management station, it is a new responsibility, but he remains undiscouraged by challenges. He consults experts to understand the species better. According to his observations, the two groups of animals from Nanhaizi and Dafeng are getting along well, and even integrating into one close community. Ma keeps a record of the reserve’s ecological conditions. He has noticed that the plant cover has increased, thanks to the national protection policy and plenty of rainfall in recent years.
“The milu originally lived in the wetlands along the Yellow River and the Yangtze River. This is the first time they have been released in a cold mountainous region, where the winter temperature can drop to -30℃,” says Khorintavan, head of the nature reserve. “The staff had built winter shelters, but the deer never went there. The milu deer have a thick coat, which keeps them warm.” he adds. “The task ahead is to see how well the babies adapt to the new environment.”
The gold and iron mines in the mountains were shut down long ago. Locals are aware of the importance of wildlife conservation, which has enhanced the confidence of experts.
“The birth of babies means that the Daqing Mountain National Nature Reserve is a suitable habitat for the milu deer. It is a reference for us to better develop more potential habitats,” says Guo Qingyun, associate research fellow at the Beijing Milu Ecological Research Center in Nanhaizi.
    12. What can be known about the two different deer groups?
    A. They may combine to give birth to a baby.
    B. They struggle between each other for territories.
    C. They live in separate areas in the nature reserve.
    D. They were released in the wetlands along rivers.
    13. What helped the milu deer escape from the cold?
    A. The leafy trees. B. Their thick hair.
    C. The rich fat. D. The winter shelters.
    14. What is Guo Qingyun’s attitude towards the future of milu deer?
    A. Critical. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
    15. What is the suitable title of the text?
    A. Wildlife Conservation B. New Hope for Milu Dear
    C. Newly built Nature Reserve D. Healthy Growth of Baby Deer

It had been 5 years since Zahida’s husband passed away due to a heart attack. Every day, she buried herself in her embroidery (刺绣), feeling her waist ache due to the long hours of work. She would grow tired faster these days.
The doorbell rang. Her son Aamer returned from the office. Entering the house, Aamer threw his bag at a sofa. “I have told you again and again not to throw things everywhere!” Zahida complained. “Mom, why do you find fault with unimportant things every day? Boss at office, you at home... Oh so tiring!” Aamer slammed (砰地关上) the door to his room.
Such unpleasant exchanges always happened now. Zahida would often recall the days of Aamer’s childhood fondly, which would bring smile to her face. She could remember the days when the little Aamer had parted unwillingly on his first day to school or had shouted excitedly at spotting a sleepy bear during a visit to the zoo. Zahida wondered if Aamer too could recollect these memories or had piled them in a forgotten corner of his mind.
Following a quiet dinner that night, Zahida happened to pass Aamer’s room. She could hear Aamer’s voice floating out. “Yes, yes... you do understand that she is a picky woman. She cannot adjust easily anywhere. You must take care of that...”
Zahida was caught by a sudden sense of anxiety. A few days ago, a neighbor’s children sent her neighbor off to an old age home. They were too busy to have time for the old woman. What did Aamer talk of? Was she also...? No, surely Aamer couldn’t be doing that. Zahida retired to bed.
“Please be sure to deliver the tickets for our trip to Egypt as soon as possible,” Aamer continued.
    注意:1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
A few days later, a postman rang the doorbell when Aamer was away for work.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“Mom, here... Look what I’ve got in the envelope!” Aamer shouted with joy like a child.

Not trusting her fingers to tear open the envelope without harming the contents within and considering it as important, she placed it on the table. Aamer could check what was inside when he returned. Aamer, upon returning, spotted the envelope. Grabbing it swiftly, he began tearing it open, his eyes shining with excitement.
“Mom, here... Look what I’ve got in the envelope!” Aamer shouted with joy like a child. Zahida took the contents from her son’s hands. It contained air tickets bearing her and Aamer’s names and some other documents. She looked up questioningly. “Oh, Mom. We are going on a trip to Egypt. Remember how you used to tell me bed-time tales of the ancient Egypt? Let’s visit it for real this time. I know you are a little picky. I have taken care to get good accommodations in Cairo and...” Aamer went on and on talking while his mother smiled with a sense of happiness filling her heart.
