When the great library of Alexandria (亚历山大图书馆) burned, the story goes, one book was saved. But it was not a valuable book, and so a poor man, who could read a little, bought it for very little money.
The book wasn't very interesting, but between its pages there was something very interesting indeed. It was a thin strip of animal skin on which was written the secret of the“Touchstone (试金石)”! The touchstone was a small pebble (鹅卵石) that could turn any common metal into pure gold.
The writing explained that it was lying among thousands and thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it. But the secret was this: The real stone would feel warm, while common pebbles were cold.
So the man sold his few belongings, bought some simple supplies, camped on the seashore, and began testing pebbles. He knew that if he picked up common pebbles and threw them down again because they were cold, he might pick up the same pebble hundreds of times. So, when he felt one that was cold, he threw it into the sea. He spent a whole day doing this but none of them was the touchstone. Yet he went on and on this way. Pick up a pebble. Cold—throw it into the sea. Pick up another. Throw it into the sea. The days continued over a long period of time.
One day, however, about mid-afternoon, he picked up a pebble and it was warm. He threw it into the sea before he realized what he had done. He had formed such a strong habit of throwing each pebble into the sea that when the one he wanted came along, he still threw it away.
So it is with opportunity (机会). Unless we are cautious (小心的,谨慎的), it's easy to fail to recognize(识别) an opportunity when it is in hand and it's just as easy to throw it away.
24. According to the story, the touchstone_______.
A. is a big pebble B. feels cold C. is magic D. is pure gold
25. The man threw pebbles into the sea_______.
A. to test how far he could throw B. to practice throwing pebbles
C. to avoid picking up the same pebble D. to express his disappointment
26. What message does the story want to express?
A. Good habits can lead to success.
B. Habits can only hold you back.
C. Opportunity prefers slow but strong mind.
D. Opportunity only visits the ready and cautious mind.

On Nov.16, seven astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) woke up to an alarm(警报). A Russian missile(导弹) test had just bombed a satellite into more than 1,500 pieces of space debris (残骸). Some got very close to the ISS.
NASA says space debris like this can travel at more than 28,000 km/h. That’s much faster than a bullet(子弹) (about 3,500 km/h). Even a pea-sized piece of debris could “wipe out” a space station or kill an astronaut if he or she is doing a spacewalk, says Live Science.
Since the 1950s, humans have sent thousands of rockets and satellites into space. Many are still there, and we now face an ever-increasing problem of space rubbish. In 2006, for example, National Geographic reported that a tiny piece of space rubbish hit the ISS, taking a small piece of glass out of a window. In June of this year, a piece of debris ran into one of the station’s robotic arms, which are just like the arms of a robot, and left a hole.
Scientists are trying different ways to deal with the problem. One way is to use a huge net. In 2018, the UK’s Survey Space Center caught some space rubbish with a net in an experiment. It first found the debris, and then collected it with a net and a harpoon(鱼叉).
Another way is to use robotic arms. Clear Space 1, the European Space Agency’s task to clean space rubbish, is going to be sent into space in 2025. It will use robotic arms to catch debris. This plans to throw the debris into Earth’s atmosphere(大气层), where it will burn up as it falls because of strong friction(摩擦).
27. According to NASA, space debris moves ____ as fast as a bullet.
A. eight times B. nine times C. seven times D. six times
28. The best ways to deal with space debris is ____ according to the article.
a. throwing it away into the planet
b. throwing it into the sun to burn up
c. collecting it with nets and harpoons
d. throwing it into Earth’s atmosphere to burn up
A. ad B. cd C. ab D. bd
29. What can we infer from Paragraph 3-4?
A. There is nothing we can do to deal with space debris.
B. The astronauts are quite safe in space even there is space debris.
C. More and more tasks are failing because we don’t want to cause space rubbish.
D. Thousands of old rockets and satellites are turning into space rubbish for years.

When we see babies or pets, we can't help gently touching them to show our love. And they give us happy feelings back. But a recent study shows that it’s different for plants.
A study, published in The Plant Journal, shows that plants don’t “like” to be touched. That’s because touching changes their genes(基因)and, even worse, can slow their growth.
Professor Jim Whelan of the La Trobe Institute in Australia gave an explanation. “The lightest touch from a human, animal, insect, or even plants touching each other in the wind, leads to a huge gene change in the plant,” Science Daily reported.
In order to test the theory, the scientists did an experiment on plants. They grew a number of plants to the age of four weeks. Then they touched them with a paintbrush every 12 hours over a 36-hour period.
They found that as a response to the touch, the mitochondria(线粒体)in the plants had been partly destroyed. The mitochondria, as Science Alert noted, are the “powerhouse of the cell. The mittochondria produce energy for the rest of the cell in both animals and plants.
If this “powerhouse” is weakened, the plants will lose a large amount of energy that should have supported their growth.
Whelan further explained to Science Daily, “If the touching is repeated, then plant growth is reduced by up to 30 percent.
Although the process does have a strong effect on plants, usually the plants survive. Touching changes the plants, but it’s not necessarily a bad change.
According to Science Alert, frequent touching or moving plants will make them grow shorter than other ones.
The researchers believe this change, in some ways, could be helpful. It may help plants fight threats to their health such as insects and bad weather.
The new research findings have led to a deeper understanding of the plants’ response to touching. And the research might “open up new ways to reduce sensitivity(敏感性)and optimize(优化) growth in the future”, Science Alert reported.
30. Why don’t plants like to be touched?
A. Plants’ genes will be changed.
B. Plants will grow much taller than others.
C. Plants growth will be reduced by up to 40 percent.
D. Plants will lose the ability to fight against bad weather.
31. What does the underlined word “weakened” in Paragraph 6 possibly mean?
A. Becoming stronger. B. Becoming less strong.
C. Becoming less changeable. D. Becoming more changeable.
32. What can we get from the new research?
A. A new way to increase sensitivity in the future.
B. A totally bad and strong influence on plants’ growth.
C. A wonderful method to help plants grow better and better.
D. A deeper understanding of the plants’ response to touching.
四、信息还原 (共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Do you want to be happier? Well, you can do something about it. Some psychologists(心理学家) believe that 10% of your happiness is due to life conditions and 40% is the result of your own choices. Your own choices include how you manage your time at school, your relationships, your friends, your activities and your health. So you have a lot of control over how happy you feel. 33 Here are some tips on how to do that.
Surround yourself with positive(积极的) people. Spend time with positive people and your ideas will become active. On the other hand, good friends will encourage, support, and lift you up when you're down. 34 That's also true for the people that we work with.
Don't try to be perfect. Remember that nothing can ever be perfect. 35 Instead think about what you already have. Think about what you've already done. Think of where you are today as a step towards tomorrow. Don't try to be perfect, just try to do things well-with excellence.
Focus on now. Don't think about all the things that can go wrong, like failing at school or your friend leaving you. Thinking like this only results in worry and stress, which is a waste of time and energy. 36 Just worry about making today great, because the best way to be happy is just to enjoy each day.
Compare yourself to yourself, not to other people. There will always be someone smarter, or richer, or better looking or more successful than you. There will always be someone with a bigger house and a bigger boat than you. Someone will always have more. Rather, look at what you have got and who you are, accept and value that. Work toward being a better one than you were last month or last year. 37 And you will feel a lot happier with, and about yourself.
A. They see the best in you, and that helps you see the best in yourself.
B. That way you will be pleased with the progress that you are making.
C. The key is to take control by making choices and developing habits that make you happier
D. You can control how happy you are, since giving always makes you feel happier.
E. If you can't control tomorrow, don't worry about tomorrow.
F. If you aim for perfection all the time, you will never be satisfied or happy.

It seems food deliverymen (送货员) are always in a hurry. They wear blue, red or yellow helmets (头盔) and many of them don’t follow traffic rules. They drive on the wrong side of the road and run red lights. They use mobile phones while driving.
These rude behaviors have caught the public's attention.
In the first half of 2017, food deliverymen had 76 traffic accidents in Shanghai according to Shanghai Public Security Bureau. That means every two and a half days, a food deliveryman will die or get hurt on the road.
What makes deliverymen take such risks? The strict rules of the food delivery service companies and the anxious customers may be the answer.
Many companies will fine a deliveryman-up to 2,000 yuan, if he fails to deliver an order on time, reported China Daily Fines also go to those who get bad reviews from customers.
To solve the problem, food delivery service companies need to improve their praising systems. Some cities are also taking action. Shanghai has asked companies to train their deliverymen on traffic rules and safety. Now in Shenzhen, if a deliveryman gets caught breaking traffic rules more than twice then he will be stopped from driving food service delivery transports for a whole year.
