On Monday, I stopped my car in front of my daughter Juliet’s middle school. She jumped in the front
seat, feeling down. She asked me to help her study for her science test.
"Dad, I need to memorize a unit about the Reproductive Cycle of Plants. And I can hardly make it. "
"You know. memorizing seems like the best way to study, but in fact you can do better in tests if you
work on trying to understand the material. "
Juliet was open to my advice. It was Monday afternoon and we had two nights to study before the
test on Wednesday. I suggested a plan. "Tomorrow night, you are going to teach the material to me. Tonight, read the unit. Prepare to teach. "
Asking her to teach me was an unusual idea but I decided to do it Studies show teaching somebody
else is a very useful way to learn. Even if you don’t do the teaching, the act of preparing to teach leads to more learning than just trying your best to memorize the material.
On Tuesday afternoon, Juliet sat down with her science book facing me and said, "Okay Dad, let’s
study." wanted her to teach me. But false stars happened. I couldn’t be too hard on her. So instead we started with me asking her some simple questions. She knew some but not others. When she didn’t know the answers, I encouraged her to check the book.
She stared checking things that didn’t make sense. And she was actively trying to test her
understanding. I was happy to see it She wasn’t memorizing, she was trying to make sense of things, which was exactly what I had hoped she would do.

percent. " Zhang added.

"Monkeys do not follow. researchers in the same way as humans do. It is difficult to take high-
quality. pictures und videos of them, which are needed to improve the system, "said Li Baoguo, leader of the research team.

It seems that self-help books are becoming increasingly popular these days. Last year, sales of
these books in the UK rose 20 per cent. reaching three million. The Guardian reported.
Many of the self-help books are written by famous people or psychologists(心理学家) They teach you how to face problems in your life. But can self-help books really help people with their daily lives? People have different opinions about this. Julie Hall from London is a big fan of self-help books. After reading more than 300 of them, she sets up her own self-help website. Her site helps women achieve their goals in the business world. ''They (self-help books) can give you confidence and motivation(积极性) to do what you want to do, ''she said. However a recent study in Canada might not have the same opinion. Scientists surveyed two groups of people---one of the groups had rad many self-help books, while the other hadn’t. They found that people in the first group were more depressed(沮丧的).
There is no "quick fix " that can improve people’s daily lives. However, it’s always good to know
that kind of help is ready for people when they need it.
