Becky Czarnecki was in college last year when a friend invited her to go to a soup kitchen to serve food to people experiencing homelessness. As it turned out, there were actually too many volunteers that day and the kitchen was too crowded (拥挤的), so Becky sat and just talked to people.
She started to talk to one man in particular every week — conversing with him and the other people felt like it was what she was meant to do, she says.
People often don't know how to offer their time at a center for the homeless. “You don't have to know what to say or do or how to fix things,” Becky says. “Just be present for someone.”
Becky's advice for helping men and women experiencing homelessness is to look them in the eye: “Just smile and look them in the eye and treat them with respect (尊重) like you would with a friend.” People often wonder whether they should give money to the homeless, but she says “they'll be judged (评价) for what they spend it on, not me.”
Similarly, Siobhan Cooney's first experience volunteering involved (包括) making meals for the homeless. “I was very uptight the first time, but I trusted the adults I was with. They gave me confidence and calmed my mind,” Siobhan says.
Now Siobhan is on a team that addresses homelessness in Philadelphia. At every dinner, she is able to build a relationship with those people. She listens to their stories. “It is so interesting,” she remembers. “I've met someone with a law degree, an artist ...”
So if you're thinking about volunteering at a soup kitchen or center for the homeless, remember that all you have to do simply is being a good listener.
24.What did Becky do during her volunteer service last year?
A.Chatted with the homeless.
B.Prepared foods for the homeless.
C.Built a large kitchen for the homeless center.
D.Invited more volunteers to work for the homeless center.
25.What does Becky take into consideration when helping the homeless?
A.Their education levels.
B.Their interests.
C.Their feelings.
D.Their health needs.
26.What does the underlined word “uptight” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Excited.
B.Tired.
C.Confident.
D.Nervous.
27.What can we learn from Becky's and Siobhan's stories? A. Hard work pays off.
B.A listening ear matters.
C.Kindness is beyond all price.
D.Actions speak louder than words.

On September 13, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) put forward a plan. It would protect tricolored bats (三色蝙蝠). This follows a similar plan to protect the northern long-eared bat. The two kinds of bats are in danger, mainly because of an illness called white-nose syndrome.
White-nose syndrome is caused by a fungus (真菌). It shows up on the animal's nose and wings. White-nose syndrome has been in North America since at least 2006. In 2007, scientists began to notice the animals getting sick and dying from the fungus. The fungus grows in places that are cold, dark, and a little wet. Millions of bats have died as a result of the illness.
In the U. S. there are 47 species of bats. Most of them prey on (捕食) harmful insects. “They eat night-flying insects in much of the U. S.,” wildlife scientist Jeremy Coleman says. “In a single night, bats can eat up to half their weight in insect prey. The plan is a timely reminder of bat protection. This is good news for farmers since bats eat harmful insects.” According to the USFWS, the animals help U. S. farmers save more than $3 billion a year in controlling harmful insects.
There is no way to treat white-nose syndrome. But scientists are developing ways to help bats survive. A2018 study found that ultraviolet (紫夕卜线的) light can kill the fungus. Researchers are also testing a fungus-fighting substance (物质) that can be used in areas where bats live. And they're working on a vaccine (疫苗).
There are many ways to take part in bat protection, Marilyn Kitchell says. She's a public affairs specialist with the USFWS. One example: “A lot of people love bat boxes,” she says. Instructions can be found online. Local wildlife groups can also provide suggestions, since building methods may differ depending on the kinds of bats in your area. Remember: Bats are wild animals. You shouldn't keep them.
28.What do we know about white-nose syndrome?
A.It is a big risk to human health.
B.It always appears in warm conditions.
C.It is very deadly to bats in North America.
D.It was first found in North America in 2007.
29.What does Jeremy Coleman think of the plan?
A.It will draw strong support from farmers.
B.It should include more scientists.
C.It is quite costly to the USFWS.
D.It is of great importance.
30.What are scientists working on?
A.Studying more kinds of bats.
B.Looking for ways to help bats.
C.Offering expert advice to wildlife groups.
D.Drawing public attention to wildlife protection.
31.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.What puts bats in danger.
B.How to help bats in daily life.
C.How to discover wild bats in cities.
D.What would happen if bats die out.

In Orchestra (管弦乐队) class, we had on Fridays something called Chair Challenge. You could challenge the next higher-up chair. The teacher chose a passage from the music and the person you were challenging would play it first — then you would play it. The teacher would determine which of you won.If you won, you changed places with the loser and moved up one chair.
And at the end of December, whoever was first-chair violin, first-chair viola (中提琴) and first-chair cello (大提琴) would play the three separate solos (独奏) in the big New Year Concert.
Hearing this I was determined to be the one who played the cello solo in the New Year Concert. I was second-chair, third-cello. In order for me to become first-chair, first-cello I would need to do five Chair Challenges — and win all five! And I only had six weeks to do it.
The school allowed us to take instruments (乐器)home on weekends. I decided to take my cello home and practice hard. So every single Friday and then again on Monday, for six weeks I carried this big cello case onto and off the bus before and after school. Then I went home and practiced. I practiced any music we were playing in class. And I sounded terrible.
But I kept at it. And then a funny thing happened around the second week. I wasn't sounding that terrible anymore. And I realized I was getting better.
The first Chair Challenge the following Friday was a nervous affair. My hands were shaking badly. But when I finished the teacher smiled and said,“Challenge successful — change chairs.”I felt excited.
I didn't dare(敢)tell anyone about my goal. I knew they'd tell me it was impossible.
The girl who was first-chair, first-cello, Patricia, had been playing for years! Surely, to replace (取代)Patricia would be very difficult.
But I kept practicing and winning my challenges, week after week — until it was the last Friday of December. I was now second-chair, first-cello. The teacher asked if there were any Chair Challenges. Patricia turned to me and laughed.
“Well ...?”she said.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
“Challenge!”] called out.
The class cheered and clapped.

To raise students' awareness of carrying forward/Aiming at encouraging the students to inherit traditional Chinese culture, the Chinese Calligraphy Association of our school held a Chinese calligraphy exhibition on January 10th. The activity started at 2 p.m in the school lecture hall , lasting for 3 hours.
The activity began with an inspiring lecture given by a famous calligrapher, from which we had a deeper understanding of the importance of Chinese calligraphy. Then came the exhibition of excellent works, most of which were created by the students in our school. It was really a visual feast. The highlight of the activity is the hands-on session. The famous calligrapher taught us how to create wonderful works with a brush. We benefited a lot.
Not only did this exhibition provide us with an opportunity to get a better insight into Chinese calligraphy but also strengthened our determination to learn and promote it.
第二节(满分25分)
73.One possible version:
“Challenge!”I called out. Everyone laughed and cheered. The teacher pulled out two pieces of music. Patricia went first, being the challenged, and she played the passage beautifully. Only one little mistake. Then it was my turn. I was unfamiliar with this piece, but I'd been practicing, and my sight-reading had improved so much that I was confident I could do well. I took a deep breath and began. I played that passage so smoothly that it was like I'd been playing it all my life.
The class cheered and clapped. I was surprised. No one had ever clapped after a Chair Challenge. Even Patricia was clapping! The teacher had a smile as he nodded. “Challenge successful, change. And, congratulations, First-Chair, First-Cello.”It turned out that the piece he had given us to play was the actual cello solo for the New Year Concert. I learned, from my personal experiences, that you can achieve what you set out to complete.

M: Sorry, love, but I'm afraid I can't right now. I'll have to repair the car, you see.
(Text 2)
W: Let's leave home at six o'clock. The movie starts at seven. Are we walking there?
