Every New Year, many people make promises to themselves, only to see them fall by the wayside within a few months, weeks, or even days. However, 26-year-old Luke Cameron is not among those people. After losing a close friend known for her generosity(慷慨)died of cancer in 2013, the young man decided to do at least one good deed every day for 365 days and he has not missed one yet.
Cameron performed his first good deed on January 1st, 2014, with the simple act of greeting a waitress at a cafe he visited. The next day he bought food and drinks for some homeless people. Cameron’s good small deeds have been recorded in an online diary, like taking out the garbage for an elderly neighbor or spending a few hours helping a disabled lady pick out a dress for a party. What’s more, the young man has also spent close to £4000 of his own money, buying gifts for children in need.
Cameron has created a series of some cards, which he has called “Cards for Kindness”. Each card suggests a simple act of kindness — things like giving a stranger a hug or making peace with an enemy, which is to encourage others to perform good deeds.
Cameron’s generosity has not gone unnoticed. To reward the young man as he nears the end of his journey, pizza chain Domino’s recently awarded him a year’s supply of free pizza. Not surprisingly, the big-hearted young man has decided to use the gift to hold special pizza days for charity. His kind deeds have also won him a competition for the job of “National Philanthropy(慈善事业)Manager”.
4. What made Cameron determined to do good deeds every day?
A. The need of a competition. B. The requirement of his job.
C. The death of a close friend. D. The influence of his families.
5. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The influence of simple acts of kindness.
B. The good things that Cameron has done.
C. The importance of having close friends.
D. The awards that Cameron has received.
6. Why did Cameron create “Cards for Kindness”?
A. To record his good deeds. B. To make peace with an enemy.
C. To raise money for some charities. D. To encourage people to show kindness.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. No Pains, No Gains B. The Power of Dreams
C. A Good Deed Every Day D. The Best Man in Britain

Have you ever considered all the English expressions that include words about clothes? Let's have a look.
People wear pants to cover the lower part of their bodies. We sometimes say that people who are nervous have ants in their pants. Sometimes, people may get caught with their pants down. They are found doing something they should not be doing. And, in every family, one person takes control. Sometimes a wife tells her husband what to do. Then we say she wears the pants in the family.
Pants usually have pockets to hold things. Money that is likely to be spent quickly can burn a hole in your pocket. Sometimes you need a belt to hold up your pants. If you have less money than usual, you may have to tighten your belt.
I always praise people who can save their money and not spend too much. I really take my hat off to them. Yet, when it comes to my own money, I spend it at the drop of a hat, which means I instantly spend it.
Boots are a heavy or strong kind of shoes. People who are too big for their boots think they are more important than they really are. I dislike such people.
My father is an important person. He runs a big company. He wears a suit and tie, and a shirt with sleeves that cover his arms. Some people who do not know him well think he is too serious and never shows his feelings openly. But I know that my father wears his heart on his sleeve.
8. What is this passage mainly about?
A. What pants mean in English
B. Some special English expressions
C. Some English expressions related to clothes
D. Some funny English expressions
9. Which of the following expressions can show someone is nervous?
A. Have ants in one’s pants
B. Get caught with one’s pants down

10. If we say someone has to tighten his belt, we probably meant that he_______
A. has done something wrong
B. used to live a rich life
C. has put on the wrong pants
D. is short of money
11. Someone who spends his money at the drop of a hat most probably________
A. doesn’t save money.
B. earns much money.
C. never wastes his money.
D. spends more than he earns.

A nickname is a shortened form of a person's name. A nickname can also be a descriptive name for a person, place or thing. Many American cities have nicknames.
Los Angeles has several nicknames. One is simply the city's initials, LA. It is also called "The City of Angels" because Los Angeles means “the angels” in Spanish.
Los Angeles often has warm, sunny weather. So another nickname is “City of Flowers and Sunshine”. New York is called “The Big Apple”. So Los Angeles is sometimes called “The Big Orange” because of the fruit that grows in that city's warm climate.
The American motion picture and television industries are based in Los Angeles. So it is not surprising that it is called “The Entertainment Capital of the World”. Many films are made in the area of Los Angeles called Hollywood. Millions of people visit the area. No trip to Los Angeles is completely without seeing the word “Hollywood” spelled out in huge letters on a hillside.
Many movie stars live in Los Angeles. The city is sometimes called “Tinseltown”. This nickname comes from the shiny, bright and often unreal nature of Hollywood and the movie industry.
Another nickname for Los Angeles is “La–La Land”, using the first letters of Los and Angeles. This means a place that is fun and not serious, and maybe even out of touch with reality.
The city of Los Angeles is part of Los Angeles County. There are many smaller cities in the county. Beverly Hills, with its rich people, is one of them. So is Pasadena, with its Rose Parade each New Year's Day.
A good place for watching unusual-looking people is Venice, an area on the west side of Los Angeles. A system of waterways designed after the Italian city of Venice has been built there.
12. What's the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To tell us what a nickname is. B. To prove that nicknames are popular.
C. To lead us into the topic to be presented. D. To tell us some people's nicknames.
13. Which of the following is NOT the nickname for Los Angeles in the passage?
A. LA. B. City of Flowers and Sunshine.
C. The City of Angels. D. The Big Apple.
14. Why is Los Angeles called “The Entertainment Capital of the World”?
A. Because Los Angeles often has warm, sunny weather.
B. Because many movie stars live in Los Angeles.
C. Because there are many smaller cities in the county.
D. Because the American motion picture and television industries are there.
15. The underlined part “out of touch with reality” in Paragraph 6 can probably be replaced by “______”.
A. fantastic B. false C. real D. practical

第二节:读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Be kind to others. I realize this is simple and very basic. However, it is necessary and it does make a difference. I often have people who cross my daily path to whom I can show kindness. It is often just a smile. A smile often says, “I see you. You aren’t invisible to me. You are important.” People need someone to care about them.
I read a story many years ago about a man who had decided to commit suicide. He’d lost a fortune, his job, his family and nearly everything he owned. He went to a local pawn shop to buy a gun. He planned to take the gun back to his apartment in New York City, and kill himself.
As he was getting on the elevator, a little old lady was slowly getting on too. She had a small cart she was pulling behind her and was having a little trouble getting it into the elevator. He said that he was actually a bit angry because he wanted to hurry up, get to his apartment and end his own life. He reached out to the old lady’s cart and forced it as it had become stuck. He got it free easily and she got on the elevator.
After the door closed, she looked up at him with a big smile and said, “If we had more young men like you in this world, the world would be a better place. You are so kind to help. Such a sweet young man. ”
Of course, it changed his thought of going back to kill himself. He wanted to go around New York and find people that he could help and people who were struggling even with something that was as small as the little old lady’s cart.
