In June 2015, Alice Grace, a young entrepreneur, founded her business AilieCandy. By the time she was 15, her company was worth millions of dollars with the invention of a super-sweet treat that could save kids’ teeth, instead of destroying them, which is beneficial.
The story began when Grace paid a visit to a bank with her dad. On the outing, she was offered a candy bar. However, her dad reminded her that sugary treats were bad for her teeth. But Grace was bored with missing candies. So she intended to ignore the warning, “Why can’t I make a healthy candy that’s good for my teeth so that my parents can’t say no to it?” With that in mind, Grace asked her dad if she could start her own candy company. He recommended that she do some research and talk to dentists about what consist of a healthier candy.
Fortunately, with her dad’s permission, she spent the next two years researching online and conducting experiments to get a recipe that was both tasty and tooth-friendly. She also approached dentists to learn more about teeth cleaning. As a result, she succeeded in making a kind of candy—CanCandy, only using natural sweeteners, which can reduce oral bacteria. That is the special part of it.
Grace then used her savings to get her business off the ground. Afterwards, she and her father secured their first business meeting with a supermarket owner, who finally agreed to sell Grace’s product—CanCandy.
With her success growing, so does Grace’s credibility as a young entrepreneur. Grace is enthusiastic about the candy she created, and she’s also positive about what the future might bring. She expects that every kid can have a clean mouth and a broad smile.
At the same time, with her parents’ help, Grace is generally able to live a normal teenage life. Although she founded her company early on in life, she wasn’t driven primarily by profit. Grace wants to use her unique talent to help others find their smiles. She donates 15% of AilieCandy’s profits to Big Smiles.
4. After hearing her dad’s warning, how did Grace react?
A. She fought with him. B. She accepted his warning.
C. She had no option. D. She tried to find a solution.
5. What is special about CanCandy?
A. It doesn’t contain sweeteners at all. B. It is beneficial to oral health.
C. It is the sweetest candy. D. It is produced to a dentists’ recipe.
6. What is Grace’s expectation from her business?
A. To help others seek smiles. B. To make a fortune.
C. To make herself succeed. D. To beat other candy companies.
7. What can we learn from Alice Grace’s story?
A. To be famous is a great eagerness of the young. B. A youth is to be treated with respect.
C. Positive and helpful action lead to success. D. Success means getting personal needs satisfied.
D 5. B 6. A 7. C

The COVID-19 has led to a great demand for bikes and biking. Bikes stores are struggling hard to keep up with the demand. In the United States, bike sales have seen their jump since the 1970s. Sales of adult bikes in April of 2020 were three times as high as last year. The situation is similar in Asia and Europe. Around 90% of the bikes sold in the US are made in China. But because of the COVID-19, even the normal supply of bicycles wasn’t being created. That demand began to go up in mid-March, as people began looking for ways of getting around that didn’t involve crowded public transportation. Because biking happens in the open air, and the chance of catching the disease while riding is very low.
Biking has also grown more popular because it is one of the few forms of exercise allowed in many lockdowns. With gyms and fitness shut down, biking fills a need for many active people. Families appreciate biking, too. With school closed and kids unable to hang out with their friends, biking is a welcome activity. Bikes are also practical. Many cities are seeing this as an opportunity to make their streets safer and greener. Cities around the world are adding mils and miles of bike lanes to their streets to encourage biking. New York says it will close off up to 160 kilometers of roads so they can be used by bikers and walkers. Paris has set up over 650 kilometers of new bike lanes. The United Kingdom plans to double its number of bike lanes. In Milan, Italy, 35 kilometers of roads have been metamorphosed.
Though many of these bike lane additions are temporary, and some people assume these additions seem to destroy the overall beauty of cities, if changes in biking habits become permanent because of additions, they could seriously cut down car traffic and help make cities a lot greener.
12. What can we conclude about the present bike situation?
A. It is more expensive. B. It is safer than a car.
C. It is in short supply. D. It is all made in China.
13. What does the underlined word “metamorphosed” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Repaired. B. Changed. C. Protected. D. Designed.
14. What is the author’s attitude toward the bike lane additions?
A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Indifferent. D. Positive.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Increasing Interest in Biking B. Ride Bikes, Clean the Earth
C. More Bikes, Fewer Traffic Jam D. A Great drop for Bike Exercise
C 13. B 14. D 15. A

根据第一段中“The COVID-19 has led to a great demand for bikes and biking. Bikes stores are struggling hard to keep up with the demand.(新冠肺炎导致了对自行车和自行车的巨大需求。自行车商店正在努力满足需求)”可推知,现在的自行车供不应求。故选C。
13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“New York says it will close off up to 160 kilometers of roads so they can be used by bikers and walkers. Paris has set up over 650 kilometers of new bike lanes. The United Kingdom plans to double its number of bike lanes.(纽约将关闭多达160公里的道路,用以自行车和步行者使用;巴黎新建了650多公里的自行车道。英国计划将自行车道的数量增加一倍)”可知,这些措施说明城市在改变道路,供骑车使用,而划线词所在句与前文在意义上是并列的,也应该在谈意大利的米兰已经改建了35公里的道路(用于骑自行车)。故划线词意思是“改变”。A. Repaired.修理;B. Changed.改变;C. Protected.保护;D. Designed.
根据最后一段“Though many of these bike lane additions are temporary, and some people assume these additions seem to destroy the overall beauty of cities, if changes in biking habits become permanent because of additions, they could seriously cut down car traffic and help make cities a lot greener.(尽管许多新增的自行车道都是临时的,而且有些人认为这些新增的自行车道似乎破坏了城市的整体美感,但如果新增的自行车道改变成为永久性的,它们可能会严重减少汽车交通,帮助城市变得更环保)”可推知,作者对城市增加自行车道持赞成态度。
根据第一段中“The COVID-19 has led to a great demand for bikes and biking. Bikes stores are struggling hard to keep up with the demand.(新冠肺炎导致了对自行车和自行车的巨大需求。 故选A。
You may have grown up living with sisters and brothers, or this may be your first time sharing your living space with someone else. Having a roommate surely has its challenges. ___16___ Follow these tips to make sure you and your roommate keep things pleasant and supportive throughout the year.
Be clear from the beginning.
Maybe you hate it when someone interrupts you when you are sleeping every morning. ___17___. Let your roommate know about your preferences. It’s not fair to expect him or her to pick up on them right away, and communicating what you need is one of the best ways to get rid of problems before they become problems.
Respect your roommate’s things.
This may seem simple, but it’s probably one of the biggest reasons why roommates experience conflicts. Don’t you think he’ll mind if you borrow his shoes for a quick soccer game for all you know, you just stepped over an uncrossable line.___18___
Be open to change.
You should expect to learn and grow and change during your time at school. And the same should happen to your roommate, if all goes well. ___19___ Be comfortable addressing things that unexpectedly come up, setting new rules, and being flexible to your changing environment.
___20___
Treat your roommate like you’d like to be treated. No matter what your relationship is at the end of the year, you can take comfort knowing you acted like an adult and treated your roommate with respect.
A. Don’t borrow, use, or take anything without getting permission first.
B. As the term progresses, realize things will change for both of you.
C. Getting along well with a roommate is really a difficult job.
D. Maybe you need moments to be silent after you wake up.
E. You should correct your bad habits first.
F. Follow the Golden Rule.
G. However, it can also be a great part of your college experience.
G 17. D 18. A 19. B 20. F
“However, it can also be a great part of your college experience.”(然而,它也可以是你的大学经历的一个重要部分。)
根据空缺处前面内容“Maybe you hate it when someone interrupts you when you are sleeping every morning. ”(也许你讨厌别人在每天早上打扰你睡觉),以及后面的内容“Let your roommate know about your preferences.”(让你的室友知道你的偏好),已知前面谈到了一种情况,那么至少还存在另一种情况,有所选择才能称为“偏好”。故D项“Maybe you need moments to be silent after you wake up.”(也许在你醒来之后你要保持沉默。)
“Don’t borrow, use, or take anything without getting permission first.”(在没有得到允许的情况下,你不要借、使用或拿任何东西。)故选A。
“As the term progresses, realize things will change for both of you.”(在学期进程中,意识到你们都会改变。)故选B
此处是要为接下来这一段写小标题,根据“Treat your roommate like you’d like to be treated. No matter what your relationship is at the end of the year, you can take comfort knowing you acted like an adult and treated your roommate with respect.”
例如,第1题,上文提到“this may be your first time sharing your living space with someone else. Having a roommate surely has its challenges. ”(这可能是你第一次和别人分享你的生活空间。有室友肯定有挑战。)可知,和室友一起生活会是一个很大的挑战。而下文“Follow these tips to make sure you and your roommate keep things pleasant and supportive throughout the year.”

It is said that the best time of playing the piano is when he or she is a kid. But when Max came to his first piano lesson in his mother’s car, he was already 11 years old. I preferred students begin at an earlier age, but due to his insistence (坚持), I took him as a student. As much as Max tried, he lacked the sense of tone and basic rhythm. At the end of each lesson, he’d say, “My mom’s going to hear me play someday.” But it seemed hopeless. I only knew his mother from a distance as she waited in her aged car, but never stepped in.
After 2 months, one day Max didn’t come to our lessons any more. I thought about calling him but assumed, because of his lack of ability, that he had decided to quit. I also was glad that he stopped coming — he was a bad advertisement for my teaching!
Later, in order to celebrate the New Year, I mailed to the students’ homes a letter on the upcoming concert. Surprisingly, Jackie received and asked me if he could be in the concert. I told him that the concert was not for dropouts (辍学者), but for current pupils. He said that his mom had been sick and unable to take him to piano lessons but he was still practicing. I didn’t know what led me to agree eventually.
At the concert night, the hall was packed with parents and friends. I put up Max last in the program. I thought that any damage he would do would come at the end of the program and the negative effect would reduce to the least.
Surprisingly, the concert went off successfully. Then Max came up on stage. His clothes were wrinkled and his hair looked messy. “Why didn’t his mother at least make him comb his hair for this special night?” I thought.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version
Unexpectedly, Max chose Beethoven’s works. Max walked onto the stage confidently, then pulled out the piano bench and began his performance immediately. In fact, I didn’t get well prepared for what I heard next. His fingers were dancing on keys, which made me extremely astonished. Never had I heard Beethoven played so well by people of his age. After about six minutes, he ended up very well. Everyone present was crazy with excitement and rose to their feet, breaking into loud applause. After the performance, he stepped off the stage.
Immediately, I rushed to the stage, and held Max firmly with delight, asking “How did you do it? Do you still remember that my mom was ill seriously?” He explained, with tears rolling in her eyes, “In the past few months, she has always accompanied and encouraged me. Actually she had cancer, with little chance to survive. Today, I didn’t let her down” After I heard his words, tears were welling up in my eyes. And at that moment, I realized it was Max that taught me the true meaning of insistence and love.
