第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
For some of us who long to travel, it can be difficult to find someone to journey with. Friends and family members are tied down in jobs, struggling to save money, and don't always want to go to the same places. The solution, of course, is to go it alone.
Melbourne, Australia
Melbourne is a hot-spot travel destination, which has beautiful beaches as well as busy and lively city life. Australia as a whole is considered a safe destination for international travel, and because of that, many solo (单独) travelers go there. Melbourne is incredibly easy to get around because you can walk or bike practically anywhere!
Thailand
Thailand is great for solo travelers-perhaps because it is one of the Buddhist mentality, which promotes equality among the sexes. Thailand is known for its friendly hospitality, and as a travel hot-spot, there are plenty of chances to meet other like-minded travelers. Overall known for being very cheap, especially in the north, it's a good choice if you want to get away on a budget.
Bhutan
Bhutan is one of the most cultural countries in the world. It is also home to the world's highest unclimbed peak,Gangkhar Puensum. The mountain is sacred(神圣的)and entry is only possible on a pre-booked tour, where you are accompanied around by your own personal guide. Plastic bags are not permitted in Bhutan. In 2004, it became the first country in the world to outlaw tobacco.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a great place if you're looking for adventure, with surfing, volcanoes and other recreational activities. You'll never get a chance to feel lonely because there's an abundance of exciting adventures to experience! Costa Rica has never seen political unrest, class struggles or revolutions commonly associated with other Latin American Countries. What's more, it doesn't have or need an army because it's such a peaceful country.
21. Which place is suitable for travelers short of money?
A. Melbourne, Australia. B. Thailand.
C. Bhutan. D. Costa Rica.
22. What can we learn about traveling in Bhutan?
A. You can climb the mountain without looking ahead.
B. You can experience water adventures, such as surfing.
C. Smoking is allowed at the foot of the mountain.
D. You shouldn’t use plastic bags for your rubbish.
23. Where does this text probably come from?
A. A historical textbook. B. A science magazine.
C. A travel guide. D. An advertisement.

When Tara Wood brought her daughter to a grocery store to buy the four-year-old some cupcakes, she had no idea that would be a life-changing experience.
As Tara pushed her daughter Norah around the store last month, she passed an old man who was by himself. The old man looked cold, until Norah shouted to him, “Hi! It’s my birthday today!” The man stopped and his demeanor changed from distant and serious to warm and friendly. “How old are you today?” the man asked. After some time talking together, Norah asked her mom to take a picture of her with her new friend “Mr. Dan”, Dan Peterson, 82. They hugged and after ten minutes went their separate ways. That could have been the end of the story. But it is actually the beginning of a special relationship.
Tara posted the picture of her daughter and Mr. Dan on Face book and someone who recognized him reached out to her with his contact information. It turned out that Mr. Dan’s wife died in March and he had been suffering from depression and anxiety ever since. The person on Face book told Tara that it was the first time they had seen Mr. Dan smile since the death of his wife. Knowing that, Tara contacted Mr. Dan, and ever since Norah and the 82-year-old have developed a friendship unlike any other. “She has shown me a depth of love, a depth that I didn’t know existed,” Mr. Dan told the reporter.
Mr. Dan told Tara that before meeting Norah, he hadn’t had one night of uninterrupted sleep. Anxiety kept him up at all hours and made him restless. After meeting Norah, he said he now sleeps soundly. For Mr. Dan’s 82nd birthday on October 20, the mother and the daughter brought balloons and presents—and, of course, cupcakes. Mr. Dan will also spend a day around Thanksgiving with Norah and her family. “If you don’t take the time to notice people, you will never know how you can positively impact a life,” Tara Wood said.

Chinese cuisine(菜肴) is widely known and enjoyed all around the world. Who doesn’t long for a favorite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East—the ancient custom of “tonic food”.
Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s well-being or avoid sickness. For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil (麻油) hot pot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach, are seen as “hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radish, are seen as “cold”. One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or “cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health.
The custom of employing tonic foods for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry (枸杞), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as over-worked office staff, in need of a modest pick-me-up.
So, whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup, or increase your mental powers with a serving of pig’s brain soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you were looking for.
28. What is the present situation of tonic food?
A. It is enjoyed by many young people. B. It is catching less attention.
C. It is becoming increasingly popular. D. It is well known worldwide.
29. What is believed to benefit new mothers?
A. Chinese cabbage. B. Fruit tea.
C. Sesame oil hot pot. D. Pig’s brain soup.
30. Which of the following best explains “catering” underlined in Paragraph 3?
A. Medicine. B. Restaurant.
C. Education. D. Fashion.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Charm of Chinese Cuisine
B. The Popularity of Tonic Food
C. Differences Between hot Food and Cold Food
D. An Introduction to Chinese Tonic Food
D
We all have one shirt in the closet that we don’t want to get rid of, yet keeping around because we can’t bear to just throw it in the garbage. We don’t wear it anymore. Being a little out of style, your old T-shirt needs a new home where it can be appreciated. One city in Toronto has started a project to give it one.
Earlier this year the Toronto suburbs of Markham introduced a new program encouraging its citizens and citizens of nearby suburbs to donate their old unwanted clothing. The program is exceptional because unlike most of those second-hand stores, they are accepting old clothing that isn’t quite in perfect condition. It is breathing new life into these typically-trashed items. Contrary to common belief, textiles(纺织品)are not only used for clothing, and these items are being re-purposed in a variety of interesting ways.
The city has set up many different donation centers around the suburbs and citizens are encouraged to donate any unwanted textiles they happen to have lying around their house. It’s volunteers’ duty to divide the donations into different types. Those items in usable and good condition are donated to local homeless shelters and other aid centers. Those which are not shipped off to be used for industrial purposes. Only when there is no more industrial need for fabric and textiles will they begin to use their last place — a landfill outside the city.
The program isn’t the city’s only green initiative (倡议). It has already had one of Canada and the world’s largest solar panels, and it is said that they are steadily working towards a shift to 100% renewable energy. The city also has subsidized (补助) farmers’ markets and over 125 miles of bike paths. As a result, Markham also has a much lower rate of obesity than other Canadian cities. Now, it’s working towards another goal — 100% recycling of unwanted textiles.
32. What does the underlined word “one” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. A shirt. B. A city. C. A home. D. A closet.
33. What do the volunteers do with the unwanted clothing?
A. Sell them in good condition. B. Share them with poor kids.
C. Sort out the donations. D. Send them for industrial use.
34. What does the author want to say in the last paragraph?
A. The city is working hard to be a green one.
B. The citizens have fallen in love with the city.
C. The program is more successful than expected.
D. The city has been the best place to live in Canada.
35. What is the main idea of this text?
A. One Canadian city is giving old clothing a new life.
B. Old clothes are becoming more useful in Canada.
C. Rubbish has been put into wide use in Canada.
D. Donation centers become popular in Canada.

M: I don’t think I have any valuable autographs, but I still like them a lot.
W: What’s your favorite autograph? I would love to get an autograph from Chris Hemsworth. I loved him in the Thor movies!
M: My favorite autograph is from Marlin Brando. I met him at a restaurant once. I really want to get an autograph from Tom Hanks, though. He is the best actor and I love all of his movies.
W: Oh yeah. He is great. The movie Forrest Gump is one of my favorites.

Text 10
In July 2012, an American man named Erden Eruc completed a 5-year journey, becoming the first person ever to travel all the way around the world with no help of cars or trains. All he used was his own arms and legs, to cycle, row and walk around the world. His plan before beginning the trip was to climb the six highest mountains on earth. The weather on the mountains was terrible but it didn’t stop him. However, he was only able to climb three of them, not because of his health condition, but for money problems. Erden spent most of his time on the trip in his boat. Being alone on the sea for that much time was not at all easy, but he kept busy by listening to music and studying Spanish. He took dried food with him and had a water machine to make fresh water out of seawater. However, it only worked on sunny days. Erden is sure he will take more trips one day. But at the moment all he wants to do is rest and spend time with his wife Nancy.
