Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. For example, New York City is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson, Canada, was unmapped wilderness (荒野). But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000.
Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris. People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warming. An avalanche (雪崩) once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives.
But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food and wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come. Today, people still come and go — to see where the Canadian gold rush happened. Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City — its present population is 762.
1. What attracted the early settlers to New York City?
A. Its business culture. B. Its small population.
C. Its favourable climate. D. Its geographical position.
2. What made Dawson become a big city with a large population in the west?
A. Communications and trade. B. Gold discovery.
C. Comfortable living conditions. D. Natural harbors.
3. What do we know about those who first dug for gold in Dawson?
A. Two-thirds of them stayed there. B. Almost everyone gave up.
C. One out of five people got rich. D. Half of them died.
4 What was the main reason for many people to leave Dawson?
A. They found the city too crowded. B. They were unable to stand the winter.
C. They were short of food. D. They wanted to try their luck elsewhere.
5. What is the text mainly about?
A. The rise and fall of a city. B. The gold rush in Canada.
C. Journeys into the wilderness. D. Tourism in Dawson.

Country music is one of the most popular kinds of music in the United States today because it is about simple but strong human feelings and events — love, sadness, good times, and bad times. It tells real-life, stories and sounds the way people really talk. As life becomes more complicated (复杂), it is good to hear music about ordinary people.
Country music, sometimes called country-western, comes from two kinds of music. One is the traditional music of the people in the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern Unite States. The other is traditional cowboy music from the west. The singers usually play guitars, and in the 1920s they started using electric guitars. At first city people said country music was low class. It was popular mostly in the South.
But during World War II, thousands of Southerners went to the Northeast and Midwest to work in the factories. They took their music with them. Soldiers from the rest of the country went to army camps (军营) in the South. They learned country music. Slowly it became popular all over the country.
Today country music is also popular everywhere in the United States and Canada — in small towns and in New York City, among black and white, and among educated and uneducated people. About 1, 200 radio stations broadcast country music twenty-four hours a day. English stars sing it in British English, and people in other countries sing it in their own languages. The music that started with cowboys and poor southerners is now popular all over the world.
6. It can be learned from the passage that country music comes from ____.
A. the Northeast and Midwest B. real-life stories in small towns
C. factories and army camps in the South D. the Appalachian Mountains and the West
7. Before World War II country music was popular mainly in _____.
A. the Northeast B. the north C. the Midwest D. the south
8. During World War II many Southerners went to the Northeast and the Mid-west because ___.
A. they wanted to take music with them B. they wanted to work in the factories there
C. they wanted to make country music popular D. they wanted to make other people like country music
9. Country music is one of the most popular kinds of music in the world today because ______.
A. city people said it was low class B. it started with cowboys and poor Southerners
C. people could sing it in many different languages D. it is loved by different kinds of people in the world
10. Which of the following is wrong according to the passage?
A. City people didn’t like country music at first.
B. Country music is sung by stars all in English.
C. Country music is about human feelings and events.
D. Country music is popular among city people today.
D 7. D 8. B 9. D 10. B
根据第二段中的“Country music, sometimes called country-western, comes from two kinds of music. One is the traditional music of the people in the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern Unite States. The other is traditional cowboy music from the west.”(乡村音乐,有时被称为西部乡村音乐,来源于两种音乐。
根据第二段中的“At first city people said country music was low class. It was popular mostly in the South.”(起初城里人说乡村音乐是低级的,主要在南方流行。)和第三段中“But during World War II, thousands of Southerners went to the Northeast and Midwest to work in the factories. They took their music with them.”(但在第二次世界大战期间,成千上万的南方人前往东北部和中西部的工厂工作。
根据第三段中的“But during World War II, thousands of Southerners went to the Northeast and Midwest to work in the factories.(但在第二次世界大战期间,成千上万的南方人去东北部和中西部的工厂工作)”可知,二战期间,很多南方人去了东北部和中西部的工厂工作,故选B。
根据最后一段中的“Today country music is also popular everywhere in the United States and Canada — in small towns and in New York City, among black and white, and among educated and uneducated people. About 1, 200 radio stations broadcast country music twenty-four hours a day. English stars sing it in British English, and people in other countries sing it in their own languages.”(今天,乡村音乐在美国和加拿大也很流行——在小城镇和纽约市,在黑人和白人之间,在受过教育和没有受过教育的人之间。
根据最后一段中的“English stars sing it in British English, and people in other countries sing it in their own languages.”(英国明星用英语唱,其他国家的人用他们自己的语言唱。)可知,明星唱乡村音乐时并不都用英语,所以B选项“Country music is sung by stars all in English.”(明星唱乡村音乐时都用英语。)

According to Jessica Hagy, author of How to Be Interesting, it’s not difficult to make yourself interesting at a dinner party.
___16___, if you’re out of your comfort zone or if you’re wandering into somebody’s house for the first time. So the main thing is just to show up and be adventurous, trying different foods and talking to strangers.
People love to talk about themselves. If you can start the conversation with a question other than “What do you do for a living?”, you’ll be able to get a lot more interesting conversation out of whomever it is you’re talking to. ___17___, it can bring in “I have this old, broken-down vehicle” or “I rode the bus with these crazy people who were laughing at silly jokes in the back.” It just opens up conversation.
___18___? If you can’t take their wine away, you should certainly try to take away their soapbox (讲台). If you’re the host, you can ask them to help you in the kitchen with something and just remove them from the situation.___19___.
And what about that other dinner-party killer: awkward silence? If you’re faced with an awkward silence at a dinner party, the only thing that always gets everyone talking again is to give the host a compliment(赞扬). ___20___. Just quickly turn around and say, “This cake is extremely delicious and you have to tell me all about it.”
So being interesting at a dinner party isn’t that hard.
A. How do you know the host
B. The first step is to go exploring
C. If you ask the question “How did you get here?”
D. Be prepared to have awkward conversations with strangers
E. Or turn the conversation into a topic where they have little to say

B 17. C 18. F 19. E 20. G
根据上文“it’s not difficult to make yourself interesting at a dinner party (在晚宴上让自己变得有趣并不难)”可知,下文应主要讲述如何在晚宴上让自己变得有趣。下文“So the main thing is just to show up and be adventurous, trying different foods and talking to strangers. (所以最主要的事情就是去尝试,去冒险,尝试不同的食物,和陌生人交谈)”可推知,本段主要说明想在晚宴上让自己变得有趣,就要勇于冒险,勇于探索。由此可知,B项“The first step is to go exploring(第一步是去探索)”承上启下,符合题意。故选B项。
根据下文“it can bring in “I have this old, broken-down vehicle” or “I rode the bus with these crazy people who were laughing at silly jokes in the back.” It just opens up conversation. (它可以带入“我有这辆破旧的车”或“我和那些在后面嘲笑愚蠢笑话的疯子一起乘坐公共汽车。”它只是打开了对话)”可知,设空处应该是提了一个不太好的问题,只是开始交流,但并不会给人留下有趣的印象。由此可知,C项“If you ask the question “How did you get here?”(如果你问“你是怎么到这里来的?”这个问题)”能够承接下文,符合题意。故选C项。
【18题详解】
根据下文“If you can’t take their wine away, you should certainly try to take away their soapbox. If you’re the host, you can ask them to help you in the kitchen with something and just remove them from the situation. (如果你不能拿走他们的酒,你当然应该让他们离开讲话的地方。如果你是主人,你可以让他们到厨房帮你做点什么,只是为了让他们摆脱那种情景)”可知,此处指出了一个问题的解决办法。由此推知,设空处提到了一个棘手的问题。F项“What about the person who has had too much to drink or won’t stop talking(喝太多酒或一直说个不停的人怎么办)”正是提出的问题,引出下文的解决办法,符合题意。故选F项。
根据上文“If you can’t take their wine away, you should certainly try to take away their soapbox (讲台). If you’re the host, you can ask them to help you in the kitchen with something and just remove them from the situation. (如果你不能拿走他们的酒,你当然应该让他们离开讲话的地方。如果你是主人,你可以让他们到厨房帮你做点什么,只是为了让他们摆脱那种情景)”可知,本段主要是为解决“喝太多酒或一直说个不停”这个问题提供方法。由此可知,E项“Or turn the conversation into a topic where they have little to say(或者把谈话变成他们没什么可说的话题)”是提出的另一个解决办法,承接上文,符合题意。故选E项。
根据上文“If you’re faced with an awkward silence at a dinner party, the only thing that always gets everyone talking again is to give the host a compliment.(如果你在晚宴上遭遇了尴尬的沉默,唯一能让大家再次交谈的方法就是赞美主人)”可知,此处指出赞美主人可以缓解尴尬的沉默,设空处承上启下,下文“This cake is extremely delicious and you have to tell me all about it.(这蛋糕特别好吃,你得告诉我它的一切)”对主人进行了赞美。 G项“He or she is the person who is feeling the weight of that awkwardness the most(他或她是最能感受到那种尴尬的人)”承上启下,符合题意。故选G项
