David Frank started working for tips when he was 11 years old, delighting restaurant diners in New York with his magic tricks. As a teenager he would make an average of $60-70 in an evening—not bad, but he wanted more. So he started reading research on tipping, and found a study showing that servers who left a sweet at the end of the meal could up their pay. He tried handing customers a playing card at the end of his act, which he hoped would persuade them to part with more cash. It worked.
Mr. Frank's findings confirmed the notion of the tip as a sort of reward for outstanding service. For a start, economists are puzzled by the fact that so many people give tips, voluntarily handing out cash for a routine service, when it is assumed that customers generally want to pay as little as possible for what they buy. But fuzzier factors also seem to matter, like the feelings of gratitude that Mr. Frank inspired. A Survey in 2010 by Ofer Azar of Israel's Ben-Gurion University of the Negev found that 85% of American tippers claimed to be following a social pattern, while 60% said they tipped to avoid guilt.
During the pandemic these fuzzy factors appear to have strengthened. Mr. Lynn observed that people have been tipping more generously even while ordering take-away food.
The presence of a pandemic or of a magician performing at one's table are just two of many factors that may affect the size of a tip. A tipper may simply be touched by the server. If a waiter squats down beside you at the table as he or she takes your order, that often brings a higher tip. Good weather may encourage generosity too. Race can be an uglier factor. A study of tips for cab drivers found that black drivers were tipped on average at a rate of 13%, while white drivers got 20%.
24.Why did David Frank hand customers a card?
A.To delight the customers. B.To provide the best service.
C.To satisfy their needs. D.To increase his income.
25.What do we know about the tipping fact?
A.Customers want to pay as few tips as possible.
B.Most tippers in America tip because others tip.
C.Tipping is the best way to show gratitude.
D.Tipping is usually included in the bill.
26.Why does the author mention "take-away food"?
A.To indicate take- away food is more popular during pandemic.
B.To persuade readers to order take-away food in pandemic.
C.To emphasize that people tend to give more tips in pandemic.
D.To explain there's no need to tip in terms of take-away food.
27.What can we infer from last paragraph?
    A.The pandemic makes tips unaffordable.
B.The customers' mood influences their tipping.
C.Tipping has nothing to do with weather.
D.There are more white drivers than black ones.
    C
Like many of history’s greatest ideas, Tetris (俄罗斯方块)came about quite unintentionally. Alexey Pajitnov was a software engineer at the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Moscow, tasked with testing a new type of computer. To do so, he wrote a simple game based on a puzzle from his childhood. It would help assess how powerful the computer was--and provide a bit of fun. Little did he know that the resulting game would go on to become one of the greatest, most addictive and most successful of all time.
Tetris is a puzzle game in which geometric shapes fall down onto a playing field, and the player has to arrange them to form gapless lines. Pajitnov took inspiration from pentomino, a classic puzzle game consisting of all the different shapes that can be made by combining five squares--12 in total--with the goal of arranging them in a wooden box like a jigsaw puzzle.
To simplify things, he knocked that down to four squares, thus reducing the number of shapes from 12 to seven. He called the game Tetris, combining the Greek numeral “tetra”(meaning four) and tennis, his favorite sport. Pajitnov himself was immediately hooked. “I couldn’t stop myself from playing this prototype version, because it was very addictive to put the shapes together,” he said on the phone from Seattle, where he now lives.
Tetris has been the subject of several scientific studies. One found that playing the game can be effective in fighting off cravings for food and, while another noted an increase in the thickness of some parts of the brain in people who had played regularly. Playing Tetris for prolonged periods of time can lead to players dreaming about the falling pieces or interpreting real-world objects as shapes in the game and mentally re-arranging them--a phenomenon known as “the Tetris Effect”.
“With time going by, it hasn’t lost any of its play value and nothing has come to replace Tetris,” said Henk Rogers, a computer scientist, explaining the game’s enduring popularity. “It’s like Happy Birthday. There have been lots of songs that come and go, but Happy Birthday is always sung in the same way. Tetris has become the  Happy Birthday of computer games.”
28.Why did Alexey Pajitnov create Tetris?
    A.To bring back childhood memory.
B.To provide more fun for the public.
    C.To update the computer system.
D.To assess a new kind of computer.
29.What does the underlined word “hooked” probably mean in Paragraph 3?
    A.Pleased B.Determined C.Obsessed D.Moved
30.What can we know about Tetris according to Paragraph 4?
A.It can cause players to dream about the falling pieces.
B.It can stimulate people’s appetite for food.
C.It can lead to “the Tetris Effect” instantly.
D.It can increase the overall thickness of the brain.
31.Why does the author mention the song Happy Birthday in the last paragraph?
A.To describe the concept of Tetris.
B.To indicate the popularity of Tetris.
C.To provide the example of popular songs.
D.To introduce the topic of Happy Birthday.

In November of 1902 President Theodore Roosevelt, a noted hunting enthusiast, had been invited to join a bear hunt near the town of Smedes, Mississippi. When the President had initially proven unsuccessful on this hunt, guide Holt Collier determined to find a suitable quarry (猎物) for Roosevelt.
Tracking a 235-pound bear to a watering hole, Collier knocked out the unfortunate bear and tied it securely to a nearby tree. A messenger was sent for the President, but when Roosevelt arrived he was unimpressed by the sight of a bound, dazed and bleeding bear. He had been shocked and disappointed by this unfamiliar method of hunting, using packs of dogs to track, flush out and wear down the prey while the hunter need only lie in wait for the animal to be driven to him. This was far from the physical challenge Roosevelt was accustomed to and fond of. He not only refused to claim the bear himself, but forbade anyone else from doing so as well. Regrettably, the rarely repeated resolution to the story does not include a happy ending for the bear. Seeing the condition of the injured bear, which had been badly bitten by the dogs, Roosevelt asked that it be put out of its misery.
Reporters with the hunting party soon spread news of Roosevelt’s fair play nationwide. Among those inspired by the story was Washington Post political cartoonist Clifford Berryman, who produced a wildly popular cartoon of the incident. New York City storeowners Morris and Rose Michtom were further inspired by the cartoon, and Mrs. Michtom produced two stuffed bears for sale in their shop. The Michtom family even claimed to have written to Roosevelt and received permission to attach his name to the toy. “Teddy’s bear” swiftly became a hit, and later an enduring pop-culture symbol that has long outlasted its inspiration and namesake.
32.What did President Roosevelt think of the method of hunting?
    A.Novel. B.Unacceptable. C.Traditional. D.Effective.
33.What probably happened to the bear in the end?
A.It bled to death. B.It was set free by the president.
C.It was taken to a shelter. D.It was killed at Roosevelt’s request.
34.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The cartoon was named after President Roosevelt.
B.The Michtoms were on good terms with Roosevelt.
C.People thought highly of Roosevelt’s attitude to animals.
D.The incident had a bad influence on the Michtom family.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.An Unlucky Bear B.History of the Teddy Bear
C.A Merciful President D.A Successful Stuffed Toy
