The wallet is heading for extinction. As a day-to-day essential, it will die off with the generation who read print newspapers. The kind of shopping, where you hand over notes and count out change in return, now happens only in the most minor of our retailers (零售商), like buying a bar of chocolate or a pint of milk from a corner shop. At the shops where you spend any real money, that money is increasingly abstracted. And this is more and more true, the higher up the scale you go. At the most cutting-edge (前沿的) retail stores, Victoria Beckham on Dover Street, for instance, you don’t go and stand at any kind of cash register when you decide to pay. The staff are equipped with iPads to take your payment while you relax on a sofa.

Across society, the abstraction of the idea of cash makes me uneasy. Maybe I’m just old-fashioned. But earning money isn’t quick or easy for most of us. Isn’t it a bit weird that spending it should happen in half a blink (眨眼) of an eye? Doesn’t a wallet, that time-honored Friday-night feeling of pleasing, promising fatness, represent something that matters?

But I’ll leave the economics to the experts. What bothers me about the death of the wallet is the change it represents in our physical environment. Everything about the look and feel of a wallet, the way the materials wear and tear and loosen with age, the plastic and paper and gold and silver, and handwritten phone numbers and printed cinema tickets, is the very opposite of what our world is becoming. The opposite of a wallet is a smartphone or an iPad. The rounded edges, cool glass, smooth and unknowable as a pebble. Instead of digging through pieces of paper, we move our fingers left and right. No more counting out coins. Show your wallet, if you still have one. It may not be here much longer.

    24. What is happening to the wallet?

    A. It is disappearing.          B. It is becoming costly.

    C. It is being fattened.        D. It is changing in style.

    25. How are businesses done in big modern stores?

    A. Individually.                B. In the abstract.

    C. Electronically.               D. Via a cash register.

    26. What makes the author feel uncomfortable nowadays?

    A. Saving money is becoming a thing of the past.

    B. The pleasing Friday-night feeling is fading.

    C. Earning money is getting more difficult.

    D. Spending money is so fast and easy.

    27. What can we infer from the passage about the author?

    A. He is resistant to social changes.

    B. He is against technological progress.

    C. He feels reluctant to part with the traditional wallet.

    D. He feels insecure in the ever-changing modern world.

    C

We’ve been judging people based on the way they look for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks turned it into a science, “physiognomy”. As early as 500 BC, the mathematician Pythagoras would look carefully at young men’s faces to determine if they’d make a good student, not long after Aristotle wrote how large-headed people were mean. It was widely believed at the time that the animal a person resembled was a good judge of character.

By the Middle Ages it was well and truly mainstream. Professionals coined the phrase “stuck-up” to refer from the belief that those with upturned noses had an air of superiority, “high-brow” to refer to the high foreheads of nobles and “low-brow” to the less educated foreheads of the lower classes.

Back in 2016, we’re still doing it. We view those who resemble Labradors (拉布拉多犬) as warm, while those who resemble lions as more of a ruler. We think of those with “resting moody face” as more aggressive, those who are less attractive as sick and expect people who look familiar to share our values. Many of these judgments occur in as little as 50 milliseconds.

To get to understand and find out why having a babyface is so great, first we need to know what happens when we recognize an actual baby.

In fact, the features of babies and those universally considered “cute” are nothing more than a series of developmental accidents. Our eyes are already fully grown by the time we’re born but our heads aren’t. Similarly, our bodies do a lot more growing later on than our heads. Babies have more body fat than adults, chubby (肥嘟嘟的)cheeks, for example. The list goes on.

And regardless of whether you’re very maternal (慈爱的) or find babies really annoying, we’re unconditionally to respond to their features by turning into gentle baby-talking fools. Most importantly, gazing into their innocent faces makes us less aggressive and more generous and helpful.

So there you have it. Next time you find yourself staring affectionately into the eyes of a baby-faced friend, colleague or date, just remember, you may be the latest victim in a long-running systematic evolutionary trick.

    28. What’s the passage mainly talking about?

    A. The features of faces.  B. The science of judging people by face.

    C. The trick of faces.   D. The importance of judging people from their looks.

    29. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “coined” in paragraph 2?

    A. made up   B. looked up    C. picked out   D. figured out

    30. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. It is absolutely wise to judge people by the way they look.

    B. “Stuck-up” refers to the high foreheads of nobles with an air of superiority.

    C. People make judgments of life-and-death importance in as little as 50 milliseconds.

    D. It’s believed that the features of babies are universally considered cute.

    31. What message does the last paragraph suggest?

    A. You are sure to be easily cheated by a babyfaced friend, colleague or date.

    B. Unconsciously, you can’t help showing affection towards one with a babyface.

    C. Many babyfaced people like to play tricks, which is obviously a result of evolution.

    D. Staring into the eyes of a babyfaced friend may make you a victim of a trick.

    D

In 2015, psychologists Lauren Human and Lara Aknin conducted an online survey, which suggested that when people buy gifts, they prefer to choose something based on the recipient’s personality and tastes. Most people also said that they preferred receiving gifts bought with them in mind: gifts for them.

But Human and Aknin wondered if this approach to giving failed to take advantage of the way we connect as people. So they sent 78 volunteers into a shopping centre before Mother’s Day. Half were told to buy a card that “reveals(揭示) your knowledge of the recipient” while the others set out to buy a card that “reveals your true self”. After the purchase, the givers who had thought partly of themselves reported feeling emotionally closer to their mothers.

To find out how that approach goes down with recipients, the psychologists did another test, asking more than 100 students to choose a song on iTunes to give to a friend, partner or family member. Each half of the group received the same instructions as the card buyers. Results revealed that recipients of songs that revealed something of the givers felt closer to them than those who received gifts bought only with them in mind.

Human and Aknin suggest it might apply to all gifts. “If building stronger social connections is the underlying (潜在的) goal” of a gift and surely it should be—then we “may well be advised to offer more self-reflective gifts”. In short, for a present to be meaningful, you need to give away a bit of yourself, even if there is a risk that the gift might not so closely suit the recipient’s practical needs or tastes as one acquired purely with that in mind.

Moreover, giving something of oneself can be a safer act, the psychologists added. Because it reduces the risk of revealing poor knowledge of a recipient by attempting to buy something that fits their character—and failing.

But a note of caution here: what the research does not examine is the potential risk in repeated, unsympathetic giver-centered giving, which, according to Human and Aknin “could signal self-obsession” —and nobody wants to reveal that about themselves.

    32. What can we conclude from the Mother’s Day card test?

    A. gifts chosen with the giver in mind work well on the giver

    B. most people choose gifts with the recipient in mind

    C. most people choose gifts based on their personal tastes

    D. gifts chosen with the giver in mind work well on the recipient

    33. What do the underlined words “them, them” refer to in order of appearance?

    A. The recipients; the givers.   B. The givers; the recipients.

    C. The givers; the givers.    D. The recipients; the recipients.

    34. Which of the following is Human and Aknin’s advice on gift giving?

    A. Choose gifts that reflect more of yourself.

    B. Just focus on your own tastes when choosing gifts.

    C. Buy something that fits the recipient’s character most.

    D. Be careful not to signal your true personality.

    35. Which is the best title of this passage?

    A. The tradition of gift giving.   B. The purpose of gift giving.

    C. The effect of gift giving.   D. The psychology of gift giving.

Five Ways to Reduce Food Waste

    •Plan Ahead

Before you head out for your weekly shop, create a meal plan for the week. Think about what you are going to cook each day and how you are going to use the leftovers.  36, make a shopping list and most importantly, stick to it!

    •Shop Smart

Shopping smart may sound simple, but it is an important way to reduce food waste. When you go food shopping, avoid overbuying as this can lead to throwing food away.  37 . It may also be useful to take a photo of your fridge and cupboards to remind you of what you already have.

    38

When purchasing fresh food products, be sure to check the use-by dates to make you have enough time to use it and avoid any waste. If a product is labelled “best before”,it is a guideline and is about quality, not safety. The food will be safe to eat but may not be at its best.

    •Freeze Your Leftovers

When you cook a big meal, make sure to save the leftovers and eat them at a later date. You should label your leftovers so you can keep track of how long they've been in your fridge.  39 .

    •Get Smart with Storage

40 For example, fruit should be stored in the fridge, except bananas and pineapples. It will extend its life and make it fresh and crisp for snacking on. And potatoes and onions are not friends, as they produce gases which spoil each other. Both should be stored separately in cool, dry, dark places.

    ACheck Use-By Dates

    BAvoid Wasting Food

COnce you have planned your meals

DIf you want to store fruits and vegetables

    E.  Storing your food in the right way can extend its life

    F.  It means shopping more often and buying less each time

    G.  Adding them to your daily meal plans saves yourself time and money

    A Run to Remember

Thirteen can be a challenging age. Not only did I have to adapt to my changing body, I also had to deal with my parents’ bitter divorce, a new family and the upsetting move from my country home to a crowded suburb.

When we moved, my beloved companion, a small brown pony (小马), had to be sold. Feeling helpless and alone. I couldn’t eat or sleep, and I cried all of the time. I missed my family,  my home and my pony. Finally, my father, realizing how much I missed my pony, purchased an old red horse for me at a local market.

My horse, Cowboy, was without a doubt the ugliest horse in the world. He was pigeon-toed and knock-kneed. But I didn’t care about his faults. I loved him beyond all reasons.

I joined a riding club and faced rude comments and mean snickers about Cowboy’s looks. I never let on how I felt, but deep down inside, my heart was breaking. The other members rode beautiful registered horses.

When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance, we were quickly out of the game. I finally realized that my only chance to compete would be in the timed-speed events. I chose barrel racing (绕桶赛), an event in which a horse and its rider attempt to complete a triangular pattern around three barrels in the fastest time.

One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless to say, she didn’t feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn’t need to. I came in next to last.

The bitter memory of Becky’s smirks (得意的笑) made me determined to beat her. For the whole next month, I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena (运动场地). We practiced for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home. On the way home I would be so tired; those five miles seemed twice as long.

All of our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the pattern of barrels, finishing the course with ease.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

    My dream job

Good morning, everyone. I feel it an honor to address a speech titled “My dream job”.

Of the wide range of jobs around us, I will choose to be a teacher. My mother contributes to my choice first. Her commitment to teaching and happiness of being a teacher motivate me. Additionally, it is the inquisitive faces from my future students that reinforce my idea. At last, I am eager to make a difference to those for whom education is their only ticket to success.

Not only will I spare no effort to learn my lessons, but I will also develop some qualities required to be a good teacher. Thank you!

    【参考范文】

My turn finally came. As I urged Cowboy forward, he stumbled, and almost fell, much to the delight of the other riders. I jammed my hat down on my head, stroked Cowboy’s big red neck and entered the arena. At the signal, we dashed toward the first barrel, quickly whipped around it and with perfect precision rounded the second and thundered on to the third. We tore around the final curve and shot for the finish line.

No cheers filled the air when I finished my show. The end of our run was met with surprised silence. With the sound of my heart pounding in my ears, I heard the announcer call our time. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her proud fancy horse! I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that I’d always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it. I can be the master of my own destiny.
