When my teenaged son became seriously ill, terrible times for my family began. Our once-happy home became tense and depressed. My husband and I were exhausted under the great stress of caring for my son. It was as if we forgot how to communicate-we couldn't have a simple conversation without a fighting. Our marriage was on the point of breaking up.

One evening, my son and I were talking about gifts. I recalled my first Valentine's present from my husband, a kazoo卡祖笛. I was awkward when I received it because I couldnt get it to make a sound although I am a professional saxophone 萨克斯player. However hard I tried, it just never worked. The kazoo eventually got packed away and forgotten. But my son was interested and insisted on seeing it. After some trouble, I found it.

You couldn't get a sound? What's so hard about it?my husband asked, amazed. He took the kazoo and blew. Nothing happened. Surprised, he tried again. Still there was no sound. Frustrated, he tried again, only to produce a funny sound like an angry bumblebee大黄峰trapped inthe mouth of a bear. We burst into laughter. My son took a turn to play the kazoo. He did no better than us, causing more laughing.

Seeing his face light up, we felt as if the darkness had lifted and a ray of sunshine was let in. It was the best ten minutes of the past couple of years. The mood stayed light for the rest of the evening. It didn't solve anything. But this experience with the kazoo brought some change in our hearts that always reminds us that there are still things to laugh at and enjoy, and that we can still connect as a family.

    C. Stress and chaos arising from their son's serious illness.

    D. Lack of money needed for their son's medical treatment.

    B. He meant to make his son delighted.

    C. He wanted to ease a feeling of depression.

    D. He didn't think it that hard to play the kazoo.

    26. What is the turning point of the story?

    A. My failure to get the kazoo to make a sound.

    B. The involvement of my husband in playing the kazoo.

    C. My memory about the Valentine's present from my husband.

    D. The failed but funny playing of the kazoo by my husband and son.

You've studied hard, you've got the grades and now you're off to university! This is the journey that many students are taking, but how prepared are they to leave home, stand on their own two feet and be self- independent? One study, carried out by the Higher Education Policy Institute and Unite Students in 2021, suggested that as well as being excited and nervous, many students are deeply ill-informed about what to expect.

Of course, flying the nest to go to university is the opportunity of a lifetime, but to make the most of it needs some preparation before you arrive. This means learning life skills such as cooking and cleaning. You'll no longer be able to rely on Mum and Dad to feed you or clear up after you1, so try to learn how to make some staple dishes that are quick and easy to prepare. Graduate Peter Rogers told the reporter: I didn't really have anything other than basic cookery skills before I went to university and found learning to cook was reasonably enjoyable. Other things to do while at home is to practise some of those household chores, like operating the washing machine or ironing your clothes!

These domestic skills will come in useful because students will probably be living with others such as in a flat share or shared campus-based accommodation膳食住宿. This will also require taking responsibility for managing their finances because, apart from tuition fees, accommodation is likely to be the biggest cost for students living away from home. However, the Higher Education Policy Institute and Unite Students study found only about half of the would-be students surveyed identified rent as the biggest expense and concluded that this suggests more should be done to help in the transition过渡between school and university.

New students are going to have to be sociable as well--not just relying on old friends at home. Going to university requires meeting new people and making new friends. This often begins in Freshers' Week although journalism student Emmeke Megannety warns that: People starting university need to remember that the people you meet in your first week will not necessarily be your friends for life. "But whatever your expectations, it's good to be prepared for the time of your life.

    28. What's the function of the question in the first paragraph?

    A. To introduce a topic.

    B. To explain a concept.

    C. To make a prediction.

    D. To summarize a passage.

    29. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

    A. Most would-be students have a correct understanding of rents.

    B. There's no need to help them to adapt to the new environment.

    C. There's a gap between students' knowledge of the rent and the reality.

    D. Apart from accommodation, students don't need to bear financial burden.

    30. What can we infer from the passage?

    A. Most students know quite well what to expect in college.

    B. Cooking and cleaning do ensure a successful college life.

    C. Without life skills, students can't survive the college life.

    D. Old friends are not enough to help you enjoy college life.

    31. What is the best title for the text?

    A. Get prepared for college.

    B. Learn basic life skills.

    C. Stand on your own feet.

    D. Rely on friends when going out.

    D

As you probably know, learning a foreign language is sometimes challenging. But it can also be fun. We spend hundreds of hours at school trying to get our tongues round different vocabulary and grammar in order to earn a qualification. But learning to speak a second language is more than just passing an exam-it opens doors to new opportunities, helps you to communicate with others and makes travelling overseas more satisfactory.

It might come as a surprise that the number of teenagers learning foreign languages in UK secondary schools has dropped by 45% since the turn of the millennium. German and French have fallen the most-these languages from two of the UK's closest trading partners have declined at GCSE level. Another survey of secondary schools suggests a third of students have dropped at least one language from their GCSE exam options. There are some reasons for this, including many students' opinion that languages are difficult. Others have questioned the need for a second language when translation technology is advancing.

Matthew Fell, chief UK policy director for business group the CBI, believes that "The decline in language learning in schools must be reversed, or else the UK will be less competitive globally and young people less prepared for the modern world. But even for those who are eager to study another language, the opportunity is being reduced. In Scotland, for example, foreign language subjects are being pressed out of many secondary school timetables with some head teachers blaming pressure on the curriculum.

However, some native English speakers have admitted the benefits of speaking another tongue. Cassandra Scott, from Edinburgh, studied three languages in her final year at school. She is now a freelance translator in Edinburgh, and says Learning languages at school really set the course for my career. "

    32. How does the author show the fact that fewer people have learned foreign languages?

    A. By offering background information.

    B. By giving specific examples.

    C. By analyzing underlying reasons.

    D. By showing personal research.

    33. What does the underlined word reversedin paragraph 3 mean?

    A. Developed rapidly.

    B. Pushed quickly.

    C. Changed completely.

    D. Maintained properly.

    34. What can we learn from the passage?

    A. A fulfilling overseas travel requires another foreign language.

    B. Learning languages at school may contribute to one's future career.

    C. Native English speakers benefit more from speaking another tongue.

    D. With the translation technology, there's no need to learn foreign languages.

    35. What's the purpose of the passage?

    A. To criticize people's ignorance of foreign languages.

    B. To stress the significance of learning foreign languages.

    C. To state the result of dropping learning foreign languages.

    D. To raise people's awareness of protecting native languages.

    第二节5小题;每小题2. 5, 满分12. 5

    根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。

It is rather common that few schools make science attractive. Textbooks are as dull as dictionaries. As a result, children think that science is only for people as clever as Einstein. But actually children start out as natural scientists, eager to look into the world around them. Helping them enjoy science can be easy. 36 You just have to share your children's curiosity.

Give them time to think and ask. Adults are always used to asking children questions and waiting for their answers. It is typical that after asking a question, adults wait only one second or less for an answer, no time for a child to think. In fact, when adults increase their wait timeto three seconds or more, children give more logical and complete answers. Besides, if given some chances, children can also ask some wonderful and creative questions. 37

Watch your language. Once you have a child involved in a science discussion, don't jump in with That's rightor Very good. These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior.

38 Instead, keep things going by saying That's interestingor I'd never thought of it that way before", or coming up with more questions or ideas.

39 It doesn't make sense. Children are always thinking, without your telling them to. What's more, this can turn a conversation into a performance. The child will try to find the answer you want, in as few words as possible, so that he will be a less likely target for your disagreement.

Show;don't tell. 40 Let children look at their fingertips through a magnifying glass放大镜, and theyll understand why you want them to wash before dinner. Instead of saying that water evaporates蒸 发, set a pot of water to boil and let them watch the water level drop.

    A. Encourage children to think.

    B. Never push a child to Think.

    C. Real-life impressions of nature are far more impressive.

    D. It is necessary for parents to tell children some stories about science.

    E. There's no need for a lot of scientific terms or expensive lab equipment.

    F. But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that discussion is over.

    G. This ability comes from the deep thinking and the desire to know what they don't know.
