    Talking Too Much

Peter is such a big talker. He drives David and Andy crazy! Peter thinks he is great at everything! What makes David and Andy even crazier is the fact that Peter IS good at everything! He always scores goals in soccer games. He won first place in the school speech competition. He always gets perfect marks on his tests. He can finish a math test first and get the best score in the class.

How can one person be so good at so much? However, Peter is not good at one thing. He is not good at being a good sport. No matter what Peter does well, he makes sure everyone knows about it. He is also quick to make unkind comments about other kids' mistakes. David and Andy's one wish is that Peter learns to be humble.

Not many people tell Peter what a good job he does, or congratulate him on his achievements, because Peter has already talked about them to everyone too proudly. He does not give anyone a chance to learn about anything he has done. David and Andy wish Peter could be more like Jack.

Jack is the new kid in class this year. He does not talk much, but he is very good at many sports and is also super smart. It has taken the rest of the kids a while to learn about Jack and all his talents. Andy, David, and the other kids are happy to congratulate Jack when he scores a goal or gets a great score on a test. Jack just smiles and says thanks. He often makes a nice comment back to express thanks for someone's kindness, and he often praises others' efforts at sporting events or schoolwork. Andy and David have decided that they want to act more like Jack when they experience success. They wish Peter would learn from Jack, too.

    24. What is Peter weak at?

    A. Giving a speech in public.

    B. Scoring goals in soccer games.

    C. Getting good marks on his tests.

    D. Accepting other people's mistakes.

    25. Not many people praise Peter because      .

    A. he always shows himself off first

    B. people think he is an ordinary boy

    C. few people know his achievements

    D. he doesn't do very well in anything

    26. Peter should learn from Jack because Jack is     .

    A. sporty B. helpful C. respectful D. confident

    You Can Make a Windsock(风筒)

Have you ever seen a windsock blowing in the wind? Well, you can make one of your own! This is a fun project that you can do with things you may have. You just need to follow a few easy steps.

    You will need:

    ● one piece of heavy colored paper            ● five ribbons

    ● strong tape                              ● a string

    ● a pencil

    What to do:

Step 1: Draw pictures on the paper. You can write your name on it. Do anything that will make it special to you.

Step 2: Make the paper into the shape of a tube. Hold one of the shorter edges(边缘) over the other. Then make them together with the tape at each end and in the middle.

Step 3: Use a pencil to make a hole into both sides of the tube. The holes should be only on one end of the tube. Pull the string through both holes. Then tie the ends of the string together.

Step 4: Now make five holes around the top of the other end of the tube. Put a ribbon through each of the holes. Tie a knot in the ends. Make sure the knots are bigger than the holes.

Now your windsock is ready to use, but how does it work? The shape of the tube plays an important part. Wind blows through the tube and makes it fly and dance around. Hold the windsock up in the air by its string and run around. It will fly behind you. You can also hang it outside and watch it dance around on its own!

    27. You draw pictures on the paper to make the windsock ________.

       A. fun       B. heavy        C. strong        D. special

    28. Which of these things do you need for Step 2?

       A. Tape.       B. Ribbons.       C. A pencil.       D. A string.

    29. What do you do after you put ribbons through the holes in the tube?

       A. Make holes in the tube.         B. Tape the tube together.

       C. Tie knots in the ribbons.         D. Put a string through the hole.

    30. What is the main purpose of this article?

       A. To tell an interesting story.         B. To explain how to do something.

       C. To teach an important lesson.        D. To show what a windsock is like.

    D

Have you ever heard of a ball of energy? People often use it to describe very active children. But today we tell about an invention called the soccket, that is a real soccer ball of energy. Julia Silverman explains that in fact the soccket is a portable generator(便携式发电机).

Julia Silverman and Jessica Matthews developed the soccket as part of a group project for an engineering class at Harvard University.

There are mechanisms(装置) in a soccket. When you kick, hit or throw it, energy is then kept in it by these mechanisms instead of disappearing into the environment.

Then the user can put something directly into the ball, like a lamp, or a mobile phone charger so that they can get energy from it.

For every fifteen minutes of the game play, the soccket can provide enough electricity() for an LED lamp for three hours, and the ball can store(储藏) up to 24 hours’ electricity.

The International Energy Association reported last year that nearly one and a half billion people in the world had no electricity to use, and most of them live in sub-Saharan Africa and in India and other countries in Asia.

Julia Silverman and Jessica Matthews both had experiences in developing countries before they began the project. They knew that power shortages are a serious problem in really areas.

There’s an energy crisis in the world. One out of every five people in the world don’t have any electricity. And besides that, there are a lot of health problems because what people use instead of the electricity are harmful choices like kerosene(煤油) lamps, which produce a lot of smoke.

Julia Silverman says the soccket ball is one small solution(解决方法) to a big problem.

Jessica Matthews and Julia Silverman hope their soccket ball will shine more light on the problem of power shortages. It offers people a chance to put their energy into the world’s most popular sport and get some energy in return.

    31. From the passage, we know the soccket is ________.

    A. an active child      B. an invention      C. a lamp       D. a mobile phone

    32. If you play the soccket for half an hour, it can provide an LED lamp with electricity for ________.

    A. fifteen minutes      B. half an hour       C. six hours      D. three hours

    33. The underlined word crisis in the passage means ________.

    A. a time of safety      B. a time of difficulty     C. a time of success     D. a time of pride

    34. We can infer(推断) from the passage that ________.

    A. Julia Silverman has never been to developing countries before

    B. Active children like to play soccket

    C. kicking a soccket can let the energy disappear into the environment

    D. people are expected to get some energy by playing soccket

    35. The best title for the passage should be ________".

    A. The only way to produce electricity        B. The best way to solve energy crisis

Every student wants to be successful, but not everyone knows how to make success. At least, the idea is there, but they would not dare. They are afraid to fail. Too afraid to grow.

No success without failure. Success is not just getting something you do. Its a learning process, a process of rise and fall. That makes it so interesting, because without fall, there will something to celebrate your success.

Continue to grow. Some people do not succeed ________ they dont want to change anything around them. They did not dare to step out because they fear the feeling of others. So they do not catch the chances of success with both hands nothing. Unless you try, youll never be successful. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Invest(投资) in your brain. You can use the Internet, library, or museum for ideas, but an idea often fails as it directly comes from you. Someone else can tell you a good idea. But the idea is from someone else. Think about it with your brain, youll find the correct way.
