Here are some of the world’s most unusual events.
☆ World Ice Golf(高尔夫) championship, Greenland.
For more than 10 years the World Ice Golf championship has been seen as the most extreme golf competition in the world. In 1997, architect Rolf Henning-Jensen was asked to design the world’s first ice golf course among huge icebergs(冰山)and heavy snows of Uummannaq, a small town on the west coast of Greenland-- 600km north of the Arctic Circle. There golfers face extreme temperatures as their first task to deal with. Then it will take player time and patience to accommodate themselves to white “green” and orange balls to play with. Determined by weather conditions, this event is scheduled for March each year in Greenland.
☆ Balloon Fiesta, the United States.
Have you ever been taken to the sky in a hot air balloon? The yearly Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta gives you the chance to enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the city and countryside. Since 1972, perfect October weather, blue skies and wind known as the “Albuquerque Box” have worked together to allow balloonists to control their way thanks to the direction of blowing winds. This is the only place in the world to enjoy balloons flying in the blue skies each October.
☆ El Colacho, Spain.
The world’s most dangerous festival takes place every year in a small Spanish village Castrillo de Murcia near Burgous. El Colacho means devil’s (魔鬼) jump and in fact this is the act of baby-jumping. Its purpose is to force a devil to leave the child’s body. Men dressed as devils jump over small babies to guard them against illness and bad spirits. Many consider the festival to be dangerous as “jumping devils” could hurt babies. But locals believe the action protects their babies from bad things and organise the jump in the streets, so people can watch or even join.
- What does the schedule of World Ice Golf Championship depend on?
A.Transport. B. Weather. C. Economy. D. Golfer’s time.
22. What can we learn about Balloon Fiesta?
A.It is held in autumn B. It is held every two years.
C.It is known as “Albuquerque Box” D. It is known for watching birds in the sky.
23. What is the purpose of El Colacho in Spain?
A.To wish babies good health. B.To celebrate babies’ birthdays.
C.To attract large numbers of visitors. D.To catch the bad spirits hidden in the babies.

One night, as I was driving down the road, I found something was sitting in the middle of the road. A few seconds later, I realized I was looking at a large turtle (海龟). Afraid of it being crashed by cars, so I pulled over, ran across the road and dragged the turtle to safety. But I’d made one big mistake.
I had heard that the best way to pick up a turtle without hurting it was picking it by the tail in order not to get bitten. So I’d made that big mistake. While the turtle turned out OK generally, I was determined to figure out how to move a turtle properly. I needed to find someone who dealt with turtles. I found the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre. I talked to Dr. Sue, its Executive and Medical Director.
Dr. Sue told me that the organization dealt with a number of aspects of turtle conservation, including rescue, settlement, birth programs, research, and education. Sue explained that southern Ontario is home to a vast majority of turtles in Canada, but is also one of the vastest road networks of the country.
“Ninety percent of injured turtles brought in are caused by cars. These turtles spend a lot of time on land. And they do travel many kilometers on land for a variety of reasons, to find a nesting spot, or to hang out for the summer or winter. Turtles know where they want to go. So, just keep them going in the direction they want to go and you may have saved a turtle’s life,” Dr. Sue said.
Once an injured turtle arrives at the center, there are medical facilities (设备) ready to go, including an X-ray machine. That’s when the team gets to work with healing injuries, and help their patient.
24. Why did the author stop the car?
A. To help the turtle. B. To see the thing clearly.
C. To prevent a car accident. D. To find something good.
25. What happened to the turtle?
A. It got hurt by people previously. B. It was injured a little bit.
C. It was run over by a car. D. It lost its direction.
26. What did Dr. Sue suggest at last?
A. Leaving the turtles alone. B. Making Ontario home to turtles.
C. Changing the road conditions. D. Helping turtles find nesting spots.
27. What does the underlined word “patient” refer to in the last paragraph?
A. The director. B. The driver. C. The author. D. The turtle.

At the foot of the Tianmu Mountain in Zhejiang, a homestay (民宿) is attracting travelers from far and wide, which has won architectural (建筑学的) medal at the 2021 German IF Design Awards.
The owners of the homestay are a couple in their late 30s who decided to return to their hometown three years ago. Li Xiumei used to be in charge of a division at a company in Hangzhou, and her husband was a sales director. It was an ordinary situation where Li’s husband was on business trips a lot and Li worked overtime on weekends. City life sometimes is not easy.
In 2018, they quit jobs and went back to Dongtianmu village, which lies in a forest of bamboo. The first time they drove into the village was one late afternoon. The cooking smoke was rising from the foot of the mountain, which gave them a very different feeling from the city.
The homestay was built beside her husband’s old countryside house. The old house is preserved (保留), while a brand-new building was built on its side and the whole site is made up of four courtyards. It has been updated to have a hall, a tea room, a kitchen, a dining room. Japanese cherry trees are planted in the east courtyard. A swimming pool is placed in the west courtyard, with a bar located on one side.
Li and her husband love gardening and music, and their new home gives them enough space to continue their interests and relax in the heart of nature. Li wants to share the quiet country life, so she makes her new home a homestay. In 2019, the homestay became an online hit after guests shared their experiences on social media. “The longer I stay here, the more I feel it was the right choice to come back, and this is more meaningful than making money,” Li says.
28.How did Li feel about city life?
A.Satisfied. B.Tired. C.Attractive. D.Noisy.
29.What impressed the couple when first driving to the village?
A.The smoke of cooking. B.The forest of bamboo.
C.The smell of the village. D.The feeling of loneliness.
30.What can we infer about the homestay from paragraph 4?
A.It is ancient and broken. B.It can hold many guests.
C.It has been rebuilt by the couple. D.It must have been carefully designed.
31.What’s more meaningful than earning money according to Li?
A.Continuing their music dream. B.Staying at the old house.
C.Living in the countryside. D.Developing the economy of cities.

“All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.” But now scientists have given us an other warning: too much play with smart phones or computers makes you dull too.
“Many focus on the benefits of digital devices(设备)in education but ignore the costs”, said Patricia Greenfield from the University of California, “losing the ability to understand the emotions of other people is one of the costs.” Greenfield and her research team did an experiment. They worked with 105 children who spend about 4.5 hours in front of screens on a school day. The students were asked to describe the emotions towards the pictures of people who were happy, sad, angry or scared. Then, half of them attended a five-day nature and science camp. There they had no smart phones, TV, or computers. The other half stayed in school and spent the five days as usual. Five days later, all the children took the test again.
Students who had been to the camp got about 5 percent more answers correct than they had done before the camp. But the other group of students didn't show much improvement. The study is not perfect in some ways, said the researchers. But scientists say that the study is still a warning for us.
“Emotional skills develop in practice and the brain develops through real interaction.” said Professor Taylor, a professor at the University of San Francisco.
Researchers talked to 2,000 parents of children aged 2-16 in the UK about what activities their children could do confidently. The results were surprising: Their children could use a tablet(平板电脑)(59%)and work a mobile phone(57%)more confidently than they could tie their shoe laces(鞋带)(53%)! So, spend more time away from mobile phones and computers if you want to be an understanding friend, and not a member of what the Daily Mail called “Generation Helpless”.
32.According to Professor Greenfield, using digital media in education leads to ______.
A.being in bad terms with family members
B.making more mistakes when taking exams
C.falling far behind others in all schoolwork
D.failing to relate to other people's emotions
33.Scientists think the results of Greenfield's experiment ______.
A.are alarming for people B.are far from perfect
C.are quite surprising D.need to be improved
34.What can we know from the text?
A.Too much play with digital devices raised some worries.
B.Students learned how to describe emotions in the experiment.
C.Students living without screens did much better in studies.
D.Most of the UK children couldn't tie their shoe laces.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Stay away from the Internet B.Here comes a digital world!
C.Screens do harm to emotions D.How people become addicted?
