I was nine when I arrived at the Children’s Home in Nashua, New Hampshire, in 1965. I failed third grade that year, just made it through a second time, and had managed to finish fourth grade by the time I reached Pauline Jambard’s fifth-grade class at Charlotte Avenue Elementary School.
I was convinced(使信服) I wasn’t “smart” like the other kids, and I hoped I could make it through fifth grade. Ms. Jambard took a great liking to me. Of all the subjects in school, reading was my favorite. She would tell me,“Terry, you keep reading. If you can understand what you’re reading, you’ll be smarter than most kids.” After I read all the books in our program, I started reading the classroom’s set of Encyclopaedia Britannica(《大英百科全书》). I couldn’t find enough to read, and I started to really like school.
After I graduated from Ms. Jambard’s class in 1969, my brother and I moved, and I lost all touch with my teacher. In 1983, I was on a business trip and had to drive through Nashua. I took a chance and dropped by Charlotte Avenue Elementary. I was walking toward her classroom when she came out in the hallway and said,“Terry!” It was as if I had never left. I was in seventh heaven on my way home.
We have stayed in touch, and I call Ms. Jambard at least once a year. Because of the confidence she gave me, I went on to have a successful career(事业) in engineering. I don’t know if Ms. Jambard realizes how much she helped me, but I’ll never forget her kindness and faith in me.
4. How did the author probably feel about the subjects in third grade?
A. They were very easy. B. They were quite difficult.
C. They were very interesting. D. They were completely useless.
5. When the author was in fifth grade, he ________.
A. became the smartest kid in his class B. read a lot and wrote his first book
C. followed Ms. Jambard’s advice D. did well in all the subjects
6. By saying “I was in seventh heaven”, the author means that ________.
A. he was really worried B. he was very happy
C. he had an accident D. he lost the way
7. What would be the best title for the text?
A. The Teacher Who Raised Me Up B. Ms. Jambard: a Lifelong Friend
C. Charlotte Avenue Elementary School D. My Early Life in the Children’s Home
B 5. C 6. B 7. A

I failed third grade that year, just made it through a second time可知,对于三年级的那些科目,作者应该是感觉很难,故选B项。
Jambard对作者所说的Terry, you keep reading和After I read all the books in our program...I couldn’t find enough to read可知,作者听从了Jambard老师的建议,故选C项。

The connection between people and plants has long been the subject of scientific research. Recent studies have found positive effects. A study conducted in Youngstown,Ohio, for example, discovered that greener areas of the city experienced less crime. In another, employees were shown to be 15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated with houseplants.
The engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)have taken it a step further changing the actual composition of plants in order to get them to perform diverse, even unusual functions. These include plants that have sensors printed onto their leaves to show when they’re short of water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater. "We’re thinking about how we can engineer plants to replace functions of the things that we use every day,"explained Michael Strano, a professor of chemical engineering at MIT.
One of his latest projects has been to make plants glow(发光)in experiments using some common vegetables. Strano’s team found that they could create a faint light for three-and-a-half hours. The light, about one-thousandth of the amount needed to read by,is just a start. The technology, Strano said, could one day be used to light the rooms or even to turn trees into self-powered street lamps.
In the future, the team hopes to develop a version of the technology that can be sprayed onto plant leaves in a one-off treatment that would last the plant’s lifetime. The engineers are also trying to develop an on and off"switch"where the glow would fade when exposed to daylight.
Lighting accounts for about 7% of the total electricity consumed in the US. Since lighting is often far removed from the power source(电源)-such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway-a lot of energy is lost during transmission(传输).Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.
8. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. A new study of different plants.
B. A big fall in crime rates.
C. Employees from various workplaces.
D. Benefits from green plants.
9. What is the function of the sensors printed on plant leaves by MIT engineer?
A. To detect plants’ lack of water
B. To change compositions of plants
C. To make the life of plants longer.
D. To test chemicals in plants.
10. What can we expect of the glowing plants in the future?
A. They will speed up energy production.
B. They may transmit electricity to the home.
C. They might help reduce energy consumption.
D. They could take the place of power plants.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Can we grow more glowing plants?
B. How do we live with glowing plants?
C. Could glowing plants replace lamps?
D. How are glowing plants made pollution-free?
D 9. A 10. C 11. C

A study conducted in Youngstown, Ohio, for example ,discovered that greener areas of the city experienced less crime. In another, employees were shown to be 15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated with houseplants.
These include plants that have sensors printed on their leaves to show when they're short of water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater. 故选A。
Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.
Lighting accounts for about 7%of the total electricity consumed in the US. Since lighting is often far removed from the power source-such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway-a lot of energy is lost during transmission. Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.

Summer is around the corner, and you may already be dreaming about how you’ll spend your break. Chances are, staying in school is not your top pick. But for 13-year-old Simone Jones of Philadelphia — and more than 2 million other students in the U.S. — going to school in the summer is the only choice. That’s because Simone goes to a year-round school.
In fact, year-round schools have almost the same number of vacation days as traditional-calendar schools. In a year-round school, summer break is usually shortened to about four weeks; the remaining vacation time gets spread out over the rest of the year. Simone, for example, gets a few weeks off in the fall, winter, and spring.
That extra time off during the school year can be a good thing. “Everyone thinks a year-round school is hard,” says Simone. “But the little breaks take a lot of pressure (压力) off us.”
Reorganizing the year can prevent summer learning loss — that is, forgetting what you’ve learned from the prior (之前的) school year. However, there is a downside. In fact, some schools have tried year-round schedules (时间表) only to turn back when it was difficult to carry out. Try setting up a soccer game with another school when you’re on a break every few weeks. Planning family trips can be difficult too, especially if siblings (兄弟姐妹) are on different school schedules.
What does summer vacation mean in our culture? It’s an American tradition, a time to create lasting memories. But is tradition a good enough reason to keep it around? Summer break began 120 years ago, when it was very hot in the summer, so schools started closing. Today, we have air conditioning. And most parents work. For many kids, summer days are spent mostly indoors, playing video games and watching TV. Clearly the world has changed. Is it time for summer break to change, too?
12. According to the text Simone Jones _____.
A. suffers from summer heat B. studies at a year-round school
C. has become tired of going to school D. keeps forgetting what she’s learned at school
13. In what way are year-round schools different from traditional-calendar schools?
A. The number of vacation days. B. When students go to school every day.
C. What subjects students may choose. D. How the holidays are organized.
14. The underlined word “downside” in Paragraph 4 could best be replaced by “_____”.
A. problem B. choice C. danger D. duty
15. In the author’s opinion, summer vacation _____.
A. was started in the early 19th century B. doesn’t have to be that long any more
C. is a tradition for people to keep alive D. is a good time for kids to enjoy themselves
B 13. D 14. A 15. B
由第一段中的“That’s because Simone goes to a year-round school.
由第二段“In fact, year-round schools have almost the same number of vacation days as traditional-calendar schools. In a year-round school, summer break is usually shortened to about four weeks; the remaining vacation time gets spread out over the rest of the year. Simone, for example, gets a few weeks off in the fall, winter, and spring.
由第四段中的“However, there is a downside. 故选A项。
由最后一段中的“Summer break began 120 years ago, when it was very hot in the summer, so schools started closing. Today, we have air conditioning. And most parents work. For many kids, summer days are spent mostly indoors, playing video games and watching TV. Clearly the world has changed. Is it time for summer break to change, too?
