Elizabeth Blackwell is a British-born woman physician(医师). She was born in 1821 in England. Her father decided to move the family to the United States in 1832 after his factory was destroyed by fire. It is said that she turned to studying medicine after a close friend who was dying said she wouldn’t have suffered so much if her physician had been a woman. Elizabeth knew that no woman had ever been permitted to study in a medical school. But she began to think about the idea seriously after the friend who had suggested it died.
Elizabeth discussed it with her family. Her family supported her. However, all the medical colleges refused her except Geneva Medical College in New York. When she graduated from Geneva Medical College in 1849, she became the first woman in America to earn the M. D. degree. She was not offered many opportunities as a young female physician, she opened her own office 2 years later. Her younger sister Dr. Emily Blackwell, joined her in 1856. Together with Dr. Marie Zakrzewska, they opened the New York Infirmary(医院) for Women and Children in 1857. After establishing the infirmary. Elizabeth Blackwell went on a year-long lecture tour of Great Britain. Her lectures and personal example inspired more women to take up medicine as a profession.
When the American Civil War broke out, the Blackwell sisters aided in nursing efforts. After the end of the war, Elizabeth Blackwell carried out a plan that she had developed together with her friend Florence Nightingale while in England. She opened the Women’s Medical College with her sister. This college was operated under her sister’s management. She moved to England the next year. There, she helped to organize the National Health Society and she founded the London School of Medicine for Women.
As her health declined, Blackwell gave up the practice of medicine in the late 1870s, though she still campaigned for reform(改革). On 31 May 1910, she died at home in England.
4. What probably made Elizabeth determine to learn medicine?
A. Her family’s expectation. B. Her interest in medicine.
C. Her friend’s suggestion. D. Her friend’s medical talent.

If you’re homeless and looking for a temporary shelter in Hawaii’s capital, expect a visit from a robotic police dog that will scan your eyes to make sure you don’t have a fever. That’s just one of the ways public safety agencies are starting to use Spot, a new robot that runs around with quick movement.
The police officials experimenting with the four-legged machines say they’re just another tool to keep emergency responders out of harm’s way as they search for dangers.
Joseph O’Neal, an officer of the Honolulu Police Department, said the robot has protected officers, shelter staff and residents by scanning body temperatures between mealtimes at a shelter where homeless people could quarantine(隔离) and get tested for COVID-19.The robot is also used to remotely interview individuals who have tested positive.
The company that makes the robots, Boston Dynamics, says it’s trying to do a good job of explaining to the public and its customers what Spot can and cannot do. “One of the most difficult tasks is accurately explaining the state of the technology to people who have never had personal experience with it,” said Michael Perry, vice president of the company.
There are roughly 500 Spot robots now in the wild. Perry said they’re commonly used by companies to check dangerous areas. Spot is also used to monitor construction sites, mines and factories, equipped with whatever sensor is needed for the job.
It’s still mostly controlled by humans, though all they have to do is tell it which direction to go and it can climb stairs or cross over rough areas. It can also operate autonomously, but only if it’s already memorized a road and there aren’t too many surprise obstacles(障碍). “The first value that most people see in the robot is taking a person out of a dangerous situation,” Perry said.
7. What do police officials use Spot robots do?
A. Treat patients’ fever. B. Find out patients’ eye problems.
C. Protect homeless people. D. Take people’s body temperature.
8. What’s the company’s big challenge?
A. How to describe the technology. B. How to win its customers’ trust.
C. How to promote Spot robots. D. How to produce more Spot robots.
9. What can we infer about Spot robots from the last paragraph?
A. They can plan their own road easily. B. They can choose direction themselves.
C. They can overcome many obstacles. D. They can remember a familiar road.
【答案】7. D 8. A 9. D

Commercial airlines alone contribute around 3 percent of total global carbon emissions. But the industry is actively looking for green solutions in the form of sustainable(可持续发展的) airline fuel, and in one case, that fuel may have had a previous life as your household food waste. In a study released this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers detail a method of transforming food waste into sustainable airline fuel.
Biomass(生物质), such as animal and food waste, can be transformed into biofuels, which are renewable liquid fuels made from organic matter. Derek Vardon, a senior research engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), says that their fuel worked as a mixture of 90 percent conventional petrol airline fuel and 10 percent alternative airline fuel required by the industry currently. They also show they could push it to a 70/30 mixture with more time and testing available.
Major companies are eager to participate in sustainable airline fuel because some sustainable solutions, such as battery-operated commercial planes, just aren’t possible yet with current battery technology. A battery-powered plane would be too heavy to fly long distances, so fuel that works in the same way as the fuel we have is a simpler way to trade out emission-heavy fossil fuels.
Vardon says that because the wet waste used in the process would normally go to a landfill (垃圾填埋场) and break down to release greenhouse gases, the process of making and using sustainable airline fuel could actually have a negative carbon footprint when scaled up.
Commercial airlines are also on board to find an affordable and sustainable solution to the carbon-intensive process of air travel. Airlines are looking to hit aggressive sustainability goals by 2050, including decreasing net carbon dioxide emissions by 50 percent.
10. Which of the following is used for sustainable airline power?
A. Biomass. B. Liquid fuel
C. Battery power. D. Fossil fuel.
11. Why are commercial planes still fuel-powered?
A. Biofuel proves less costly and easier to produce.
B. It’s convenient to create the proper fuel mixture.
C. Biofuel is environmentally friendly and sustainable.
D. Fuel-powered planes are likely to travel lighter and farther.
12. What does the underlined phrase “on board” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Taking off. B. Participating in.
C. Holding a meeting. D. Appearing on stage.
13. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Alternative Energy to Fossil Fuel.
B. How to Get Fossil Fuel Sustainable.
C. Changing Food Waste into Airplane Fuel.
D. How to Decrease Carbon Dioxide Emissions.
【答案】10. A 11. D 12. B 13. C

【12题详解】
词义猜测题。根据最后一段最后一句“ Airlines are looking to hit aggressive sustainability goals by 2050, including decreasing net carbon dioxide emissions by 50 percent.(航空公司希望在2050年前达到积极的可持续发展目标,包括将二氧化碳净排放量减少50%。)”可知划线单词意为“(商业航空公司也)参与(寻找一种负担得、可起的持续的解决方案)”,on board意为“参与”。故选B项。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段最后一句“In a study released this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers detail a method of transforming food waste into sustainable airline fuel.(在本周发表在《美国国家科学院院刊》上的一项研究中,研究人员详细介绍了一种将食物垃圾转化为可持续航空燃料的方法。)”

It was probably her giggling(咯咯笑) that drew my attention. English reading really wasn’t that funny as far as I knew.
It was early May and I was facing a class of sixteen kids. Though I had almost three years of teaching, this particular sixth grade class had pushed me to the limits of my patience far too many times, and I couldn’t wait to wave goodbye to them for the summer.
I had kept away from the ideal of my first year of teaching. That first year I’d covered up the small hole in the window with an inspirational poster. I’d decorated the walls with pictures of famous universities. I told the kids daily that they always had something worth struggling for. Together we would work hard and make something of their lives.
The problem, of course, was that my ideals kept being defeated by reality. Not just the reality of troubled families. I was also faced with the basic reality of the twelve- and thirteen-year-old mind. The universal mind, “You can’t make me!”
And now I was faced with a giggle when I should have had only full attention. Walking over to the young peacebreaker, I asked for the note she had in her hands. Frozen, she refused to give it to me. I waited, all attention in the room on the quiet battle between teacher and student. When she finally handed it over, saying, “Okay, but I didn’t draw it,” which showed this wasn’t just an ordinary note being passed.
After getting the class going on an English reading test, I finally had a chance to look through it. It was a hand-drawn picture of me, eyes monitoring widely, teeth blackened, and the words “I’m stupid” coming out of my mouth. There was no doubt about who it was supposed to be.
I managed to fold up the picture calmly. My mind, however, was working angrily and wanting to criticize some students on the scene. I figured I knew the two most likely candidates for drawing the picture. Maybe it was high time that I did it!
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Thankfully, calmness returned to my mind.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Looking over the notes later, I realized I was too strict with them.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Thankfully, calmness returned to my mind. Suppressing my pride, I showed them the picture. The whole class was silent as I told them how hurtful this was for a teacher. Struggling to control my emotion, I demanded there must be a reason behind for such a picture and that now was their chance to tell me anything they needed to tell me. Asking them to get out of paper and write silently, I sniffled in the back of the classroom.
Looking over the notes later, I realized I was too strict with them. Where I thought I was driving them to success, I was actually driving them away. After class, the girl walked up, handing me a card embarrassedly. One side of the card was sincere regret for the ugly joke while the other side the appeal for forgiveness. I was deeply moved. Meanwhile, a great sense of guilt arose for being too harsh. After all, students appreciate being appreciated, for teachers’ encouragement is their best motivating force.
