    Once n a dark winter's day, the yellw fg hung s thick and heavy in the streets f Lndn that the lamps were lighted. A strange-lking little girl sat in a cab with her father and was driven rather slwly thrugh the streets.
    The air was ht and steamy and filled with the scent f flwers, thusands f them.
    It was a fine dry night; frst in the air; the streets as clean as a ballm flr; the lamps, unshaken, by any wind, drawing a regular pattern f light and shadw.
    Sme days the sunsets wuld be purple and pink. And sme days they were a blazing range setting fire t the cluds n the hrizn.
    He rubbed his eyes—it was bright sunny mrning. The birds were hpping and twittering amng the bushes, and the eagle was wheeling alft and breasting the pure muntain breeze.
    The weather has changed. The snw fell thick and fast, cvering the rads, the rfs, the trees in the gardens, the frnt steps, the carriages, and the hrses.
    The cluds ver the land nw rse like muntains and the cast was nly a lng green line with the gray blue hills behind it. The water was a dark blue nw, s dark that it was almst purple.
    As I walked, thunder rumbled in the muntains all arund and rain began t fall in heavy drps. When I reached the place, the strm was at its fiercest and the cuntryside was lit up by wild flashes f lightning.
    The weather had cleared, the sun was streaming dwn and the sea was calm.

    At first, Surrell didn't see the black smke r flames shting frm the windws f his neighbrs' hme. He and his wife were just having a dinner in their wn huse in Allentwn, Pennsylvania, when they heard smene screaming: "The huse is n fire!” He went t investigate. That's when he saw tw wmen and a girl crazily at a lss n their prch(走廊). It was his neighbur' s huse. “The baby's inside there!" ne f the wmen cried. Thugh the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64, instinctively(本能地) ran inside. "The baby" was 8-year-ld Tiara Rberts, wh always called him Uncle Surrell. She was the wman's granddaughter and a playmate f Surrell's three yungest kids, 8, 10, and 12. The ther tw n the prch were Tiara's aunt and cusin.
    Paragraph 1: Taking a deep breath, he went in a secnd time.Paragraph 2: Surrell wke up in the hspital a cuple f days later.
    Entering the burning huse was like running int "a bucket f black paint". The thick smke caused Surrell t walk blindly arund, burned his eyes, and made it impssible fr him t breathe. He felt his thrat and lungs burned, and every blink stung(蛰) his eyes. The cnditins wuld have been very dangerus fr anyne, but fr Surrell, wh has chrnic bstructive pulmnary disease(慢性阻塞性肺病) and was in hspital just half a year ag, they were life- risking. After a few minutes in the smke-filled huse searching but in vain, he ran utside t catch his breath. “Where is Tiara?” he asked desperately. “The secnd flr.” her aunt shuted back. Surrell knew he culdn't hld his breath fr lng. S he uttered a little prayer: "Well, Gd, this is it. Yu gt t help me, because I'm nt cming ut withut that little girl.”

All he culd hear was the ppping f burning wd. Then a sft but distinct(adj. 清楚的) man(n. 呻吟) emerged. He quickly crawled (vt.爬) tward the sund. Finally, he tuched smething. A she, then an ankle. He pulled Tiara tward him and hugged her tight and said, "Uncle’s gt yu. "The last thing he remembered, he was utside.
    Paragraph 2: Surrell wke up in the hspital a cuple f days later. Having suffered severe burns t his windpipe(n. 气管) and the upper prtin(n. 部分) f his lungs, he spent anther tw weeks in the hspital. Tiara recvered sn and was released frm the hspital(出院) after tw days. She went t visit Surrell every day, talking with Surrell, thugh Surrell, whse thrat clsed ff and wh had t take extra medicatin, can't speak any wrd. "Thank yu fr saving my life, Uncle Surrell. "Tiara smiled. " It's a small price t pay, "Surrell thught. "but I' d d it again in a heartbeat (=withut thinking abut it).
