On a flight from Dallas, Texas, to Cincinnati, Ohio, to visit a friend in 2013, event planner Paige Chenault daydreamed about the grand birthday parties she’d throw for her daughter one day. (Paige was five months pregnant at the time.) Then, flipping through a magazine, she saw a photo of an impoverished Haitian boy, skinny. “I thought, this kid has nothing,” Paige says.
The image stayed with her, and she resolved to do something to help. “I decided I would use my talents to throw birthday parties for homeless kids,” Paige says. For the next four years, Paige and her husband, Colin, took time out from parenthood to visit shelters to determine how best to pull off the parties.
Finally, in January 2017, Paige launched the Birthday Party Project, a nonprofit organization, and recruited friends and family to help decorate Dallas’s 75- occupant Family Gateway Shelter with balloons and streamers, celebrating the birthdays of 11 boys and girls, with 60 more homeless kids in attendance. “That first party was better than I could have ever imagined,” says Paige.
Now Paige and her staff of three paid employees work with regional volunteers to plan monthly themed parties at 15 shelters across the country, some of which house abused or abandoned kids. Each child celebrating a birthday that month gets a $30 gift, a decorative place mat, and an individual cake or cupcake.
One of Paige’s favorite parts of each party is when the kids make a wish and blow out the candles. “They rarely get a chance to dream big,” says Paige.

Bowhead whales can live 200 years or longer. How they do it is no longer among the secrets of the deep.
Scientists have mapped the genetic code of this long lived whale species. The international effort found unusual features in the Arctic whale’s genes. Those features likely protect the species against cancer and other problems related to old age. The researchers hope their findings will one day translate into ways to help people too.
“We hope to learn what is the secret of bowhead whales living longer, healthier lives,” says Joao Pedru de Magalhes. He is a gerontologist at the University of Liverpool in England. (Gerontology is the scientific study of old age. ) He is also a co-author of the study that appeared in Cell Reports. His team hopes, he says, that its new findings might one day be used to improve human health and preserve human life.
No other mammals are known to live as long as the bowhead whales. Scientists have shown that some of these whales have lived well beyond 100 — including one that survived to 216. For perspective, if he were still alive, Abraham Lincoln would be turning just 211 this year.
Dr. Magalhäes’ team wanted to understand how the bowhead can live so long. To find out this, the experts analyzed the animal’s complete set of genes, called its genome. Those instructions are coded in the animal’s DNA.The team also compared the whale’s genome to that of people, mice and cows.
The scientists discovered differences, including mutations, in the whale’s genes. Those changes are linked to cancer, aging and cell growth. The results suggest that the whales are better than humans at repairing their DNA.That’s important because damaged or flawed DNA can lead to disease, including some cancers.
Bowhead whales are also better at keeping abnormally dividing cells in check. Together, the changes appear to allow bowhead whales to live longer without developing age related diseases such as cancer, said Magalhäes.
61. What can you know from the passage?
A. How bowhead whales live so long is still a mystery to scientists.
B. Bowhead whales live the longest among all the sea animals.
C. Most bowhead whales can live beyond 100.
D. The result of the research may be beneficial to human life span.
62. The example of Lincoln mainly wants to indicate that ________.
A. Lincoln died one hundred years ago.
B. Lincoln should have lived much longer.
C. the lifetime of bowhead whales is very long.
D. their study unlocked the secret of Lincoln’s death.
63. The bowhead whale can live so long mainly because ________.
A. it faces little danger in its life
B. its DNA has a strong ability of self-repairing
C. it has a complete set of genetic instructions
D. its living environment is better than that of humans
64. The underlined word “flawed” is the closest in meaning to________.
A. disabled B. changed C. misled D. repaired
65. The passage tends to tell the readers that ________.
A. the bowhead is the animal which lives the longest
B. scientists have found ways to treat humans’ disease
C. scientists have new findings in search of bow head whales
D. bowhead whales may unlock the secrets of a long, healthy life

It is sometimes jokingly said that you may skip a meal a day without any adverse effect but skip using your WeChat for an hour and you will feel distinctly unwell. It is an acknowledgement of the fact that the app is no longer only a fun tool but an essential part of life for millions.
Launched in January 2011, this messaging, social media and mobile payment app today has more than 1 billion individual users. People use it for everything, from applying for a business license to booking a hospital appointment to keeping up with family and friends, shopping and paying bills—activities that are part and parcel of our everyday life.
When it was first introduced, WeChat was only an app supporting voice, video, picture and text messages between two persons or among a group. But today it has become ubiquitous.
In the past, people carried their wallet and keys with them wherever they went; today, a smart phone with WeChat installed is all they need in daily life. Its functions like Moments and mini programs and the official WeChat accounts of government agencies and companies have made communication and public services accessible and convenient like never before.
We Chat is also widely used by enterprises(公司). Figures from Tencent show there are around 15 million WeChat official accounts, which enjoy 5 billion followers. Most businesses use their WeChat groups as a standard marketing kit. This has immensely reduced advertising, marketing and communication costs, and in the background of the novel coronavirus disease, made operations faster, contactless and safe.
However, there are concerns about the downsides of WeChat, such as addiction among primary school children. Equally serious is the misuse of WeChat for fraud or instigating crimes. However, it has to be kept in mind that these fallouts are not really the fault of WeChat, but due to the misuse of the app.
If we learn to temper our use of messaging apps with prudence (谨慎)and pragmatism(实用主义), we could be looking forward to yet new conveniences and experience in this decade with the rapid development of 5G technology and artificial intelligence. Ultimately, the choice is ours, whether to use WeChat or any other new invention, wisely or wantonly.
66. We can conclude from the first paragraph that ___________.
A. we can easily skip a meal a day.
B. we will be ill by not using WeChat.
C. weChat used to be meant for fun.
D. weChat has become inseparable in daily life.
67. The underlined word “ubiquitous” in Paragraph 3 probably has the same meaning as ____________.
A. everywhere. B. somewhere. C. nowhere. D. wherever.
68. For what reasons do the government agencies choose to use WeChat?
A. WeChat has a mobile payment function.
B. The agencies provide better service through WeChat.
C. Mini programs are convenient for the agencies.
D. People do not have to carry keys and cash with them.
69. What benefits does WeChat bring to the businesses?
A. It has brought more followers.
B. It has become a standard.
C. It has helped to cut down the costs.
D. It has made the businesses healthier.
70. What is to be remembered when we look at the downsides of WeChat?
A. WeChat should be held responsibly.
B. WeChat should be banned among primary school children.
C. The improper use of the app leads to many problems.
D. The 5G technology will bring new conveniences and experience.

Roy Austin first experienced an African adventure in 2018. All he wanted to do was get close to some African wildlife. Although Roy did realize this dream, he found something even more meaningful in Africa.
Roy spent time in many countries throughout East Africa. He was most interested in the people of rural Kenya, especially people of the Amboseli Primary and Secondary School.
During his stay, Roy became friends with several students and teachers at the school. He was deeply touched by their positive attitude, even though it was hard for them to get books and other school supplies. Even finding basic stationary was a challenge, not to mention the lack of school buildings.
In rural Kenya, school buildings are not built by the government. Students, their parents, and teachers find materials and build the schools themselves, or they have to raise money to get builders’ help. Without schools, buildings like libraries and classrooms are just dreams. The students and teachers of the schools very much wanted a library or at least some books to read.
After returning home to South Carolina in the United States, the Kenyan students’ yearning for something as seemingly “basic” as books to read still worried Roy. He decided to do whatever he could to help these children. So he started the organization Libraries for Kids International.
Since it was started, Roy has shipped over 11,000 books to 11 schools in African countries, including Kenya and Tanzania. To keep costs down, he uses the post office to send the books instead of a carrier like FedEx. The organization has helped to supply these schools with much-needed books, which brought Roy much happiness. He plans to continue shipping books to Africa.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I saw your advertisement in the school newspaper and I’m writing this email to apply to become a volunteer to call on people to protect endangered animals.
To begin with, I have a good knowledge of endangered animals because I concern myself with the protection of endangered animals through the media, such as TV programs and magazines. What’s more, my parents adopted some homeless cats and dogs, and I have abundant experience in saving animals’ lives. Last but not least, I am in good condition, due to constant exercise and body building. On the whole, I am qualified to be a volunteer. If I am recruited, my winter vacation is sure to be meaningful.
I am looking forward to your early reply.
Yours sincerely
