    A
If you’re new to a school or you are shy or tend to not get out of your comfort zone, making new friends at school might seem like a challenge. Luckily, you can overcome that challenge by looking for people with the same interests as you and by being friendly when you meet new people. Also, participate in after-school clubs and events whenever you get the chance, since that will help you meet people outside of class!
Look for people who have the same hobbies as you.
You’re more likely to be friends with someone if you have something in common with them. Try to find clubs or groups based on your favorite hobbies, then join them to meet like-minded people. Also, pay attention to people who spend their free time doing the same things you love to do.
If you’re a passionate reader, join a book club, go to public readings, or start a conversation with someone who carries novels around with their textbooks.
Spend time around people who show kindness.
Finding someone who will treat you well and support you is more important than popularity. Avoid spending time with people who talk bad about others or put them down. Instead, look for people who invite others to sit with them at lunch, who encourage others when they speak up in class, or who are always willing to help when someone needs a hand.
Introduce yourself to new people whenever possible.
When you’re around someone you don’t know, it is not unusual to just sit there quietly, especially if you’re shy. However, you and the other person will both be more comfortable after a simple introduction. Make eye contact with the person, smile, and try to seem warm and relaxed instead of nervous or anxious. Then, break the ice by talking about whatever is going on around you.
Keep the conversation going with open-ended questions.
When you start talking to someone, try asking them questions about what they like to see what you have in common with them. However, avoid simply asking yes or no questions, since one-word answers don’t necessarily keep a conversation alive. You can ask questions about whatever you’re already talking about, or you can change the subject if you feel that ran its course.
    36. Who is the passage intended for?
    A. Teachers. B. Students. C. Parents. D. Adults.

    B. approach people with lots of hobbies
    C. spend your free time meeting different people
    D. talk to people with the same interests

    A. One who enjoys the popularity.
    B. One who talks bad about others.
    C. One who wants to help you.
    D. One who always put others down.
    39. According to Paragraph 5, what should you do first when you meet someone you don’t know well?
    A. Start with a warm handshake.
    B. Make eye contact with the person.

My name is Wang Kun. Ever since middle school, my sister Wang Wei and I have dreamed about taking a great bike trip. Two years ago she bought an expensive mountain bike and then she persuaded me to buy one. Last year, she visited our cousins, Dao Wei and Yu Hang at their college in Kunming. They are Dai and grew up in western Yunnan Province near the Lancang River, the Chinese part of the river that is called the Mekong River in other countries. Wang Wei soon got them interested in cycling too. After graduating from college, we finally got the chance to take a bike trip. I asked my sister, “Where are we going?” It was my sister who first had the idea to cycle along the entire Mekong River from where it begins to where it ends. Now she is planning our schedule for the trip.
I am fond of my sister but she has one serious shortcoming. She can be really stubborn (固执的). Although she didn’t know the best way of getting to places, she insisted (坚持) that she organize the trip properly. Now I know that the proper way is always her way. I kept asking her, “When are we leaving and when are we coming back?” I asked her whether she had looked at a map yet. Of course she hadn’t; my sister doesn’t care about details. So I told her that the source of the Mekong is in Qinghai Province. She gave me a determined look — the kind that said she would not change her mind. When I told her that our journey would begin at an altitude (海拔) of more than 5,000 meters, she seemed to be excited about it. When I told her the air would be hard to breathe and it would be very cold, she said it would be an interesting experience. I know my sister well. Once she has made up her mind, nothing can change it. Finally, I had to give in.
Several months before our trip, Wang Wei and I went to the library. We found a large atlas with good maps that showed details of world geography. From the atlas we could see that the Mekong River begins in a glacier on a Tibetan mountain. At first, the river is small and the water is clear and cold. Then it begins to move quickly. It becomes rapids as it passes through deep valleys, traveling across western Yunnan Province. Sometimes the river becomes a water fall and enters wide valleys. We were both surprised to learn that half of the river is in China. After it leaves China and high altitude, the Mekong becomes wide, brown and warm. As it enters Southeast Asia, its pace slows. It makes wide bends or meanders (蜿蜒) through low valleys to the plains where rice grows. At last, the river delta enters the South China Sea.
    41. How many people would go on the trip?
    A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.
    42. How would they travel along the Mekong River?
    A. By boat. B. By bike. C. By bus. D. On foot.
    43. What is the author’s attitude towards Wang Wei’s plan?
    A. Grateful. B. Favorable. C. Doubtful. D. Praising.
    44. What can we learn from the passage?
    A. Wang Wei insisted that she organize the trip because she was well prepared.
    B. They gave up their plan because they would meet many difficulties on the way.
    C. Wang Kun successfully persuaded Wang Wei not to start the journey in Qinghai.
    D. Glacier, rapids, valleys, waterfalls, plains can be seen along the journey.
    45. What could be the best title for the passage?
    A. Journey Down the Mekong B. The Importance of a Plan
    C. A Research on the Mekong River D. Fans of Cycling and Travelling

Economic development is necessary if we want to improve society. There comes a time when the old must give way to the new, and it is not possible to keep everything from our past as we move towards the future. Finding and keeping the right balance between progress and the protection of cultural sites can be a big challenge.
Big challenges, however, can sometimes lead to great solutions. In the 1950s, the Egyptian government wanted to build a new dam (坝) across the Nile in order to control floods, produce electricity, and supply water to more farmers in the area. But the idea led to protests (抗议). Water from the dam would likely damage a number of temples and destroy cultural relics (遗迹) that were an important part of Egypt’s cultural heritage (遗产). After listening to the scientists who had studied the problem, and citizens who lived near the dam, the government turned to the United Nations for help in 1959.
A committee was established to limit damage to the Egyptian buildings and prevent the loss of cultural relics. The group asked for contributions from different departments and raised funds within the international community. Experts investigated the issue, ran several tests, and then made a suggestion for how the buildings could be saved. Finally, a document was signed, and the work began in 1960.
The project brought together governments and environmentalists from around the world. Temples and other cultural sites were taken down piece by piece, and then moved and put back together again in a place where they were safe from the water. In 1961, German engineers moved the first temple. Over the next 20 years, thousands of engineers and workers rescued 22 temples and countless cultural relics. Fifty countries donated nearly $80 million to the project.
When the project ended in 1980, it was considered a great success. Not only had the countries found a path to the future that did not run over the relics of the past, but they had also learnt that it was possible for countries to work together to build a better tomorrow.
The spirit of the Aswan Dam project is still alive today. Perhaps the best example is shown by UNESCO, which runs a programme that prevents world cultural heritage sites around the world from disappearing. If a problem seems too difficult for a single nation, the global community can sometimes provide a solution.
    51. In writing Paragraph 1, the author aims to ________.
    A. present an argument B. make a comparison

    52. What could we learn from Paragraph 2?
    A. The idea of building a dam has gained popularity.
    B. The floods of the Nile destroy many temples and cultural relics every year.
    C. A new idea met with a challenge.
    D. A new dam was to build to protect Egypt’s cultural heritage.
    53. What is the purpose of establishing the committee?
    A. To raise money for the dam.
    B. To complete the dam as soon as possible.
    C. To find a way to reduce the loss of cultural heritage.

    54. How were the temples and other cultural sites saved?

    阅读下面短文,按照要求用英语回答问题。
Too Far Away from It All?
A TV series in England, Away from It All, has surprised everyone by becoming a huge success with young people.
Its success is surprising because its main character is a shepherd (牧羊人), and the series is about the relaxing lifestyles of people who live in the country. There is none of the action that we usually see on TV. There are also no stressful moments, busy offices, or crowded cities. Away From It All is set in the peaceful English countryside and tells simple stories of people’s kindness
The director of the series says its success is a sign of teenagers suffering from stress. He says that watching Away from It All helps teenagers forget about the pressures of exams and homework and the troubles that fill the world. He also claims that it’s a good sign that today’s youth are switching to happier TV series, as it shows they would like a happier and healthier life.
Although the series’ success might have a good side, many teachers and parents are worried. They say that some of their students and children are becoming couch potatoes (电视迷) and are using Away from It All as an excuse for not completing homework. Some students have even refused to study for exams because they say that they can only achieve happiness by avoiding stressful situations completely.
One mother, Lucy Linney, said of her son Patrick, “Before he started watching Away from it All, he loved challenges and volunteered every afternoon. But now he has become a couch potato. His grades have dropped and he no longer volunteers. He says it doesn’t matter as he just wants to ‘get away from it all’.”
And what do the experts say? Paula Ray, a doctor, says that TV can influence young people’s lifestyles. But she says that if a young person reacts as strongly as Patrick, it’s likely that there are other reasons for his change in the behaviour.
    56. What is the TV series Away From It All about? (no more than 8 words)
    ________________
    57. According to the director, why is Away From It All a success? (no more than 15 words)

    58. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 mean? (1 word)
    ________________
    59. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4? (no more than 10 words)
