Blue Gold (2014) is a novel by Canadian writer Elizabeth Stewart. Based on the real problems in the world, the novel is suitable for youth. There are three different story lines that tell the stories of three girls in different countries.
Coltan, or “blue gold”, is a valuable mineral (矿物) used in making cellphones and computers. Across the world, the “blue gold” trade influences three girls’ lives. In Congo, Sylvie’s father is killed in a fight for control of coltan. Her family has to run to a refugee camp (难民营). In order to have a better life, Sylvie decided to go to Canada.
Not far from Sylvie, there is a teenager named Laiping in a factory in Shenzhen, China. Her job is to assemble components (组装零件) for cellphones. Her company treats her poorly. When Laiping tries to fight against it, she gets herself into serious problems. What will she do?
In the US, Fiona is trying hard to save her reputation (名誉). In one thoughtless moment, she took an improper (不合适的) picture of herself on her cellphone and posted it on social media. Many people saw it and then she regretted it. All three girls are connected in some way. Their similarities and differences are also very important.
Blue Gold is a good book that I would introduce it to any youth. It shows people the darker side of the world. It teaches people to be satisfied with what they have and to care about others.

Have you found that it’s hard to take your eyes off your phone? Do you feel left-out not being invited to a party? Do you think that others are having more fun, and living better lives than you? If the answer to any of these questions is “yes,” you may be suffering from (遭受) the Fear Of Missing Out, or “FOMO”. But, don’t worry, FOMO influences many people in the modem world. You are not alone.
FOMO has become a common social situation in recent years. The growth of mobile technology and social media is where FOMO comes in. New mobile technologies help us connect with anyone at all times. However, it is a double-edged sword (双刃剑). Today, most of social media are filled with photos and updates which only show the best parts of others’ lives. That can leave us feeling that our own lives are imperfect.
So, what can we do to fight against FOMO? One idea is to cut down the time you spend on social media. Setting time limits (时限) for how long you read through or use social media each day will be helpful. Also, it’s a good way to just focus on what you have but not what you don’t. What’s more, keep a so-called gratitude journal (感恩日志), where you write down three things you are grateful for every day. With these tips, FOMO can be beaten, and you will be able to have a more enjoyable life.

I grew up the “baby” of my family. I was the youngest of three sons in my family. My brothers were five and seven years older than me and did with most of the housework that my mom and dad needed to do around the house. I spent most of my time riding my bike, playing basketball, walking in the woods, or reading books on the sofa. Those days, I spent my time with all the fun and none of the responsibility(责任).
When I was 15 years old, however, both of my brothers had moved out of our home. My dad hurt his back and couldn’t work. We had moved to a mountain top house. I soon found myself then doing more work than I had ever done before. I planted our garden in spring and mowed(收割)the grass in summer. In autumn I carried and collected wood to keep us warm in the winter months to come. And all year round I carried water from a mountain stream back to our house so we could have water to drink and cook with.
At first I complained to myself. After a while, though, I began to find happiness in helping my parents that I loved so much. I sang to myself while I collected wood and smiled while I carried water. I even found myself helping my mom with the dinner dishes and cleaning. I started to realize something that I would carry with me the rest of my life too. When the work is done in love, it isn’t work.
Let all of your work be done in love then. Let all that you do be done in love. Let all of your life be lived with love.
