It is often said that elderly(年纪较大的) people don't understand youngsters(年轻人) while many believe that children are too young to fully appreciate(欣赏) the wisdom(智慧) of their elders. But in truth, both groups have a lot to learn from each other.

Sister Geraldine Tan runs the St. Joseph's Home for the Aged and Hospice(收容所) in Singapore. It's mainly a facility(机构) for serving the elderly. But not all of its visitors are senior citizens(老年人).

The home also includes a childcare center for about 50 kids between the ages of 2 months and 6 years old. At the center of the home's courtyard(庭院), there is a playground where the elderly can play with the kids. By doing so, they can learn more about each other and get mutual(相互的) respect and understanding.

I think this is quite an interesting idea. For one thing, we live in a world where aging societies are becoming more common. China itself is facing this problem as its population ages. It will be important for young people to be able to understand and care for the elderly in the coming decades(数十年).

Sadly, my own grandparents weren't around when I was little, as they had already passed away. I never got to learn what the world was like through their eyes, or what kinds of challenges they might have faced when they were my age. Their lives will always be a mystery to me.

But I suppose I can still learn from other people of older generations(一代). I might find some of their ideas old-fashioned, and they might believe that my generation's way of thinking is strange or incorrect. But we can still learn from each other anyway.

34What is special about the Singaporean facility(机构)?

AIt is actually a childcare center. BNot every visitor is allowed to go there.

CIt accepts both elderly people and kids. DThe elderly help take care of kids there.

35What problem does the world face according to the writer?

AKids are showing less respect for the elderly. BThe elderly can't understand children.

CThere are more and more elderly people. DYoung people are unable to care for the elderly.

36With Paragraph 5, the writer tells us that _______.

Awe should cherish(珍惜) our grandparents Bwe should see the world in a more traditional way

Cgrandparents face many challenges Dgrandparents' lives are full of mystery

37What opinion might the writer agree with?

AElderly people don't understand youngsters. BYoungsters can't appreciate elderly people's wisdom

CThe elderly and the young share little experience DDifferent generations can learn from each other

    38What's the best title?

AYoung spirit meets old wisdom BShow respect to senior citizens

CLove other's elder as yours DHuman spirit

    C

Abraham Lincoln cared about character, but he was also aware of the importance of having a good reputation. He explained the difference this way — "Character is like a tree and reputation is like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing."

Put another way, your reputation is what people think of you. Your character is what you really are.

It's easy to worry too much about our reputation and too little about our character. Building a reputation is largely a public-relations project; building character requires us to focus on our values and actions.

Character is revealed by actions, not words, especially when there's a gap between what we want to do and what we should do and when doing the right thing costs more than we want to pay.

Our character is shown by everyday actions, including what we say and do when we think no one is looking and we won't get caught.

The way we treat people we think can't help or hurt us (like housekeepers, waiters, and secretaries), tells more about our character than how we treat people we think are important.

Character is not a fancy coat we put on show. It's who we really are. Try to find your nature of character.

39What is the difference between character and reputation?

ACharacter is a tree and reputation is its shadow.

BCharacter is what we do to show others, reputation is what others think of you.

CCharacter focus on our own actions and thoughts, while reputation is what we want others to think of us.

DCharacter is what others think of you, and reputation is what you think of yourself.

    40Which is right about character?

AMost people care more about their character than their reputation.

BBuilding character needs good words and good look.

CCharacter is who you really are.

DCharacter can only be shown when you are alone.

41Which situation can tell a person's character better?

AWhen you are with your boss.

BWhen you are speaking to a waiter.

    CWhen you are in public.

DWhen you are watched by someone.

42What does the underline word "revealed" mean?

    A.遮掩 B.复述 C.披露 D.加强

43What does the writer mainly want to tell us?

AWe should be aware of our reputation.

BBelieve that you are the special one.

CTry to find the nature of character.

    DActions speak louder than words.

    D

Have you ever imagined going inside of a video game? That dream may soon become real. It’s called the “metaverse(元宇宙)”.

The metaverse is a shared virtual(虚拟的)3D world. The word is made up of “meta”, which means beyond, and “verse” which refers to “universe”. The word first appeared in a science fiction book called Snow Crash in 1992. In this story, people wear virtual reality (VR) headsets to see and join the metaverse.

Now, what happens in the book is becoming a reality. Wearing a VR headset, you can meet other people wherever they are. You also can work and play with them. It will feel real because the technology can simulate(模拟)our senses: vision, hearing, touch and even smell.

The metaverse is about creating another reality, another world, that’s as rich as the real world. So, what can you do inside the metaverse? Your location will no longer matter, says VOA News. It means that in the metaverse, people will be connected at all times. You can meet friends from other countries and go on a virtual beach vacation together. You can go to the beach on the moon, or anywhere else you can imagine. Can’t find a friend to play basketball? Jump into the metaverse and find some friends to play with or go to a concert!

Cathy Hack, an expert in metaverse technology, said her son’s first concert was inside a video game. “Although it happened in a video game, it didn’t make it less real for him,” she said.

Perhaps the metaverse will change our idea of what is real.

    44Paragraph 2 tells us _________.

    Ahow to join the metaverse

Bwhat happened in the book Snow Crash

Cwhere the word “metaverse” comes from

Dwhen the book Snow Crash came out

45The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refers to _________.

AVR headsets Bother people Cour senses Dvideo games

    46According to VOA News, _________.

Athe metaverse will take the place of real life

Bscenes in the metaverse are all simulations of reality

Cyou can visit any place you want in the metaverse

Dthe metaverse will take the place of traditional video games

47What is Cathy Hack’s attitude toward the metaverse?

AThe technology still needs to be developed.

BIt is not good for kids to join the metaverse.

CThe metaverse will hardly change our lives.

DThe metaverse is a different kind of reality.

48Which can be the best title of this passage?

AA Virtual 3D Movie BMetaverse Is Happening

CMetaverse in the Books DSnow Crash
