I live in Mentone, a quiet, simple, restful place, where the rich never come. I met Theophile Magnan, a retired, rich, old man from Lyons yesterday, in the Hotel des Anglais. Theophile looked sad and dreamy, and didn’t talk with anybody else, which brought me back to the past.
A long time ago, Francois Millet, Claude, Carl and I were young artists—very young artists—in fact.
Yes, Francois Millet, the great French artist, was my friend.
Millet wasn’t any greater than we were at that time. He didn’t have any fame, even in his own village. We were all poor, though we had stacks and stacks of as good pictures as anybody in Europe painted. Once a person ever offered four francs for Millet’s “Angelus”, which he intended to sell for eight.
It was a fact in human history that a great artist would never be acknowledged(承认) until after he was starved and dead. His pictures climbed to high prices after his death.
Then we made a decision that one of us must die, to save the others and himself.
    Millet was chosen-chosen to die.
During the next three months, Millet painted with all his might, enlarged his stock all he could, not pictures, but sketches, studies, parts of studies, fragments of studies, of course, with his cipher on them. They were the things to be sold.
Carl went to Paris to start the work of building up Millet’s name. Claude and I went to sell Millet’s small pictures and to build up his name as well.
We made Millet a master. I always said to my customer, “I am a fool to sell a picture of Francois Millet’s at all, for he is not going to live three months, and when he dies, his pictures can’t be had for love or money.” Claude and I took care to spread that little fact as far as we could. Carl made friends with the correspondents(客户), and got Millet’s condition reported to England and all over the continent, and America, and everywhere.
The sad end came at last. Millet died, not really. He became Theophile Magnan.
The pictures went up. There’s a man in Paris today who owns seventy Millet’s pictures. He paid us two million francs for them. Do you still remember the “Angelus”? Carl sold it for twenty-two hundred francs. And as for the bushels of sketches and studies which Millet produced in the last six weeks, well, it would astonish you to know the figure we sell them at nowadays.
We are no longer artists and Millet died.
    24. Why did the four friends decide to choose one of them to die?
    A. They wanted to be rich.
    B. They wanted to be famous.
    C. They wanted to save money.
    D. They wanted to be respected

    A. The writer lives a busy life in Mentone.
    B. Millet was finally made a famous artist.
    C. Millet painted best among the four friends.
    D. The story was written in memory of Millet.
    26. What made the four friends’ plan successful?
    A. That they didn’t want to be artists any longer.
    B. That Millet’s pictures were sold at very high prices.
    C. People’s attitude towards the artists who were starving.
    D. People’s desire to own valuable art works at low prices.
    C
Tim Berners-Lee. If you don’t know his name, you’ve surely used his famous invention. The British scientist created the World Wide Web.
On Oct.29, 2019, the Internet officially turned 50 years old. To mark the day, Berners-Lee wrote online, “The Internet and the web have changed billions of lives for the better. But their power for good is under threat(威胁). This birthday must mark the moment we take on the fight for the web we want.”
Speaking at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), he pointed out three problems affecting today’s web-criminal behavior, ad-based websites, and offensive online communication. These problems led Berners-Lee to create the Web Foundation for the web. The Foundation aims to protect internet users.
Despite all of these negatives, we shouldn’t forget about all the benefits the Internet brings. In this digital age, the Internet connects the world through social media, cashless payments and has become an important source of information. It can also make a positive difference through activities that push for positive change, education or aid.
One such activity is Movember. The movement, held every November, encourages men to grow a mustache(胡子) for the whole month, post pictures online, and donate. The charity promotes physical health, mental health, and suicide(自杀) prevention for men. Not to mention, the Internet is also a source of fun. From funny kitten videos on Weibo to your very own Douyin videos, the Internet allows you to share what you create.
Speaking to the Web Foundation, Berners-Lee said, “The web has become a public square, a library, a doctor’s office, a shop, a school, and it has given marginalized groups who have few chances to express themselves in real life a voice.” In the next 30 years, if we give up on trying to build a better web, we will have failed it. We need to come together as a global community.”
    27. According to Tim Berners-Lee, the Web Foundation was created to ________.
    A. fight against online crime
    B. celebrate the Internet’s 50th birthday
    C. increase internet speeds around the world
    D. build a better protected network environment
28 Which is TRUE according to the passage?
    A. Movember is held to draw public attention to men’s mustache.
    B. Tim Berners-Lee, the American scientist created World Wide Web.
    C. More people prefer to use the Internet for fun instead of getting information.
    D. In the future, we will probably fail to build a better web unless we keep trying.
    29. The underlined phrase “marginalized groups” in the last paragraph probably refers to ________.
    A. wealthy people
    B. old people
    C. disadvantaged people
    D. powerful people
    30. The article is mainly about ________.
    A. the history of the World Wide Web
    B. the problems of the World Wide Web

Mr. Dawson was bad-tempered and everyone in town knew it. Kids knew not to go into his yard to pick an apple, because old Dawson, they said, would come after you with his gun.
One Friday, 12-year-old Janet was walking out with her friend Amy. They had to go by Dawson’s house, but as they got close, Janet saw him sitting on his front porch and advised them to cross over the street. Like most, she was afraid of the man.
Amy said not to worry. When they got close enough, Dawson looked up with his usual frown (皱眉), but when he saw it was Amy, he gave a broad smile.
Amy smiled back and told him Janet was staying overnight with her, they were going to listen to music and play games. Dawson told them that sounded fun, and gave them each an apple.
Later, Janet asked Amy, “Everyone says he isn’t generous. Actually he’s the meanest man in town. How come he was so nice to us?"
Amy explained that when she first started walking past his house, he wasn’t very friendly, but she pretended (假装) he was wearing an invisible smile and so she always smiled. It took a while, but one day he half-smiled back.
After a while, he started smiling real smiles and then talked to her. She said he always offers her an apple now, and is always very kind.
    “An invisible smile?” questioned Janet
“Yes,” answered Amy, “My grandma told me that if I pretended I wasn’t afraid and pretended he was smiling an invisible smile at me and I smiled back at him, sooner or later he would really smile.”
If we remember that everyone wears an invisible smile, we too will find that most people can’t resist our smile after a while.
It’s so easy to get caught up in everyday life that we forget how simply we can bring cheer to ourselves and others. Giving a smile takes so little effort. Let’s make sure that we’re not the ones that others have to pretend are wearing invisible smiles.
    60. What did people in town think of Mr. Dawson?
    ________________
    61. How did Amy make Mr. Dawson nice to her?

原文“Boil the water, Add Golden Oats…”

    25. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the passage?
A 25. B 26. D
根据“It was a fact in human history that a great artist would never be acknowledged(承认) until after he was starved and dead. His pictures climbed to high prices after his death.”和“Then we made a decision that one of us must die, to save the others and himself.”
根据“The sad end came at last. Millet died, not really. He became Theophile Magnan.”
    A fight against online crime
    B. celebrate the Internet’s 50th birthday
    C. increase internet speeds around the world
    D. build a better protected network environment
    28. Which is TRUE according to the passage?
    A. Movember is held to draw public attention to men’s mustache.
    B. Tim Berners-Lee, the American scientist created World Wide Web.
    C. More people prefer to use the Internet for fun instead of getting information.
    D. In the future, we will probably fail to build a better web unless we keep trying.
    29. The underlined phrase “marginalized groups” in the last paragraph probably refers to ________.
    A. wealthy people
    B. old people
    C. disadvantaged people
    D. powerful people
    30. The article is mainly about ________.
    A. the history of the World Wide Web
    B. the problems of the World Wide Web
    C. Tim Berners-Lee’s plans to save the World Wide Web
    D. the plan to celebrate World Wide Web’s 50th birthday
D 28. D 29. C 30. A

    “An invisible smile?” questioned Janet.
“Yes,” answered Amy, “My grandma told me that if I pretended I wasn’t afraid and pretended he was smiling an invisible smile at me and I smiled back at him, sooner or later he would really smile.”
