Unbelievable Stories of Animals Acting Just Like Humans ◆Horses are picky eaters
Horses have an even better sense of smell than humans do. When horses raise their noses and open their nostrils(鼻孔) , their nervous system allows them to sense smells we can’t sense. This might explain why they refuse dirty water and carefully move around meadows, eating only the tastiest grasses, experts say.

In 2011, a whale expert spotted a humpback whale trapped in a fishing net and spent an hour freeing it. Afterward, in an hour-long display of thanks, the whale swam near their boat and leaped into the air about 40 times.

are shy by nature for its shy behaviors such as covering its face with a paw of ducking its head when confronted by a stranger.
◆A cat honors its owner
Paper towels, and a plastic cup are just a few of the gifts that Toldo, a devoted three-year-old gray-and-white cat, has placed on his former owner Iozzelli Renzo’s grave every day since the man died in September 2011. Renzo adopted Toldo from a shelter when the cat was three months old, and the two formed an inseparable bond. When I was a kid, I was the girl who kept the training wheels(辅助轮) on my bike as long as possible. Even my younger sister had got rid of them much earlier than me. But as I began to grow older, this changed.
All this happened on the Bike Safety Day. It is supposed to be a fun day at school when all of us
kids bring our bikes to school and the school provides us with the opportunity to ride outside and learn proper bike safety. Sounds like fun, right? No. In fact, it caused me to panic. What was I going to say when my friends asked me about my training wheels?
With the pressure of everyone seeing my training wheels, I determined to let them go. This was the
first big change I’d ever made on my own.
I went to my parents and told them all about my dilemma. They were more than happy to help. We went outside and got my bike. Instead of running away and hiding behind, I stood in front of my bike and took great pride in my decision as my dad removed the training wheels.
I got on and steadied myself. My heart raced but my feet and hands were calm. My dad started to
push before my feet even moved and suddenly I was off. The fear faded away and a relaxed mind came into its place. It was crazy to think how quickly I learned something that took so long for me to even try!
My confidence soared. This was going to be the start of a brand new world for me. My
accomplishment would carry me forth to new goals and wins. I realized that if I set my mind to something, I could achieve it.

The old Chinese saying “as happy as spending the New Year” might be outdated now in the busy modern world. The Spring Festival is regarded as the most important festival for Chinese people and an occasion for all family members to get together, like Christmas in the West. But many traditional customs accompanying the Spring Festival, however, have weakened in practice.
Setting off fireworks was once the most typical custom of the Spring Festival. People thought the
sputtering(爆裂) sound could help drive away evil spirits. However, the activity has been completely or partially forbidden in big cities for years as the government has taken security, noise and pollution factors into consideration.
“In recent years, some cities have begun to allow people to light fireworks during limited hours at
the Spring Festival, surrendering to(屈从于) public demand. Respecting folk traditions is a gesture of respect toward public opinion,” said Zhou Xing, a folklore researcher.
“As people gain more income and it becomes easier to buy daily goods, the New Year holiday is
just like any other. After long workdays, many people use the New Year holiday to take a rest, rather than visiting friends and neighbors. The process of making and enjoying the family dinner on Spring Festival Eve is the most important thing. However, many families would like to eat out to save time and energy,” said Li Shunzhi, a resident of Harbin, Heilongjiang.
“I enjoy the holidays very much in the countryside. My family has been preparing for the Spring
Festival more than two weeks before the holiday, cleaning the house, buying holiday goods and decorating the house with paper cuttings. On New Year’s Eve, the whole family stays up to see the New Year in, and in the days to follow, a series of activities such as lion dancing, dragon lantern dancing, lantern festivals and temple fairs will be held. Without the ancient traditions, the holiday is nothing to us,” said Zhang Hui, from Hebei.
28. Which of the following is WRONG according to the passage?
A. Setting off fireworks has been forbidden in some big cities for years.
B. Nowadays, people can light fireworks in some cities at the Spring Festival.
C. People believe that the sound of fireworks can drive away evil spirits.
D. In the past, setting off fireworks couldn’t be seen almost anywhere.
29. What Li Shunzhi said implies (暗指) .
A. what people do during the festival now is different from the past
B. people would like to have the family dinner on Spring Festival Eve
C. people prefer to visit friends and neighbors rather than take a rest
D. the New Year holiday is just like any other day
30. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Zhang Hui often spends two weeks preparing for the Spring Festival.
B. Zhang Hui is used to spending the Spring Festival with his family.
C. Zhang Hui always takes part in a series of activities after the Spring Festival.
4
D. Zhang Hui lives in the urban area.
31. What does the whole passage show?
A. The Spring Festival is as lively as before.
B. The Spring Festival is outdated now.
C. The Spring Festival is losing its qualities.
D. The Spring Festival in China is more important than Christmas in the West.
D
People have different ways of dealing with a common cold. Some take over-the-counter(非处方的) medicines such as aspirin while others try popular home remedies(治疗) like herbal tea or chicken soup. Yet here is the tough truth about the common cold: nothing really cures it.
So why do people sometimes believe that their remedies work? According to James Taylor, professor at the University of Washington, colds usually go away on their own in about a week, improving a little each day after symptoms peak, so it’s easy to believe it’s medicine rather than time that deserves the credit, USA Today reported.
It still seems hard to believe that we can deal with more serious diseases yet are powerless against
something so common as a cold. Recently, scientists came closer to figuring out why. To understand it, you first need to know how antiviral(抗病毒的) drugs work. They attack the virus by attaching to and changing the surface structures of the virus. To do that, the drug must fit and lock into the virus like the right piece of a jigsaw(拼图), which means scientists have to identify the virus and build a 3D model to study its surface before they can design an antiviral drug that is effective enough.
The two cold viruses that scientists had long known about were rhinovirus(鼻病毒) A and B. But
they didn’t find out about the existence of a third virus, rhinovirus C, until 2006. All three of them contribute to the common cold, but drugs that work well against rhinovirus A and B have little effect when used against C.
“This explains most of the previous failures of drug trials against rhinovirus,” study leader
Professor Ann Palmenberg at University of Wisconsin-Madison, US, told Science Daily.
Now, more than 10 years after the discovery of rhinovirus C, scientists have finally built a highly-detailed 3D model of the virus, showing that the surface of the virus is, as expected, different from that of other cold viruses.
With the model in hand, hopefully a real cure for a common cold is on its way. Soon, we may no
longer have to waste our money on medicines that don’t really work.
32. What does the author think of popular remedies for a common cold?
A. They are quite effective. B. They are really helpful.
C. They don’t need to be improved. D. They actually have no effect.
33. How do antiviral drugs work?
A. By breaking up cold viruses directly.
B. By changing the surface structures of the cold viruses.
C. By preventing colds from developing into serious diseases.
D. By absorbing different kinds of cold viruses at the same time.
34. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The surface of cold viruses looks quite similar.
B. Scientists have already found a cure for the common cold.
5
C. Scientists were not aware of the existence of rhinovirus C until recently.
D. Knowing the structure of cold viruses is the key to developing an effective cure.
35. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Preventing cold viruses B. Helpful home remedies
C. No current cure for common cold D. Terrible cold viruses

normal stress in our lives, after all. 36 So challenge the following limits:
Figure out what you’re afraid of and do it continuously.
If you’re a salesman, and you’re afraid of talking to people personally or over the phone now, instead of being scared and thinking you’ll fail, spend at least five minutes a day to pick up the phone

say, “Go on. I’m not scared!”
Take a class for a hobby you’ve been wanting to develop.

performing this. 38 Apart from helping you challenge yourself, taking a class for your hobby may
also give you extra income.

Travel and allow yourself to be interested in new people.

your class. 40
