You probably know who Marie Curie was, but you may not have heard of Rachel Carson. Of the outstanding ladies listed below, who do you think was the most important woman of the past 100 years?

    Jane Addams (1860-1935)

Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank. Addams helped the poor and worked for peace. She encouraged a sense of community(社区) by creating shelters and promoting education and services for people in need. In 1931, Addams became the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

    Rachel Carson (1907-1964)

If it weren’t for Rachel Carson, the environmental movement might not exist today. Her popular 1962 book Silent Spring raised awareness of the dangers of pollution and the harmful effects of chemicals on humans and on the world’s lakes and oceans.

    Sandra Day O’Connor (1930-present)

When Sandra Day O’Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952, she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. She became an Arizona state senator(参议员) and, in 1981, the first woman to join the U.S. Supreme Court. O’Connor gave the deciding vote in many important cases during her 24 years on the top court.

    Rosa Parks (1913-2005)

On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rasa Parks would not give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger. Her simple act landed Parks in prison. B

At thirteen, I was diagnosed(诊断)with a kind of attention disorder. It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not.

In my first literature class, Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said, “Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to do it.”

She glanced down at me through her glasses, “You are no different from your classmates, young man.”

I tried, but I didn’t finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.

In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn’t get much education. But Louis didn’t give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots(点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.

Wasn’t I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students? My thoughts spilled out and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was no different from others; I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I ever give up?

I didn’t expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs. Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day ——— with an “A” on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words: “See what you can do when you keep trying?”

25.The author didn’t finish the reading in class because                   .

    B. He was tried of literature

    C. He had an attention disorder

    A. He had good sight.     B. He made a great invention.

    C. He gave up reading.    D. He learned a lot from school.

27.What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. The disabled should be treated with respect.

    B. A teacher can open up a new world to students.

    C. One can find his way out of difficulties with efforts.

    D. Everyone needs a hand when faced with challenges.

    C

I am an active playgoer and play-readerand perhaps my best reason for editing this book is a hope of sharing my enthusiasm for the theater with others. To do this I have searched through dozens of plays to find the ones that I think best show the power and purpose of the short play.

Each play has a theme or central idea which the playwright(剧作家)hopes to get across through dialogue and action. A few characters are used to create a single impression growing out of the theme. It is not my intention to point out the central theme of each of the plays in this collection, for that would, indeed, ruin the pleasure of reading, discussing, and thinking about the plays and the effectiveness of the playwright. However, a variety of types is represented here. These include comedy, satire, poignant drama, historical and regional drama. To show the versatility(多面性)of the short play, I have included a guidance play, a radio play and a television play.

Among the writers of the plays in this collection, Paul Green, Susan Glaspell, Maxwell Anderson, Thornton Wilder, William Saroyan, and Tennessee Williams have all received Pulitzer Prizes for their contributions to the theater. More information about the playwrights will be found at the end of this book.

To get the most out of reading these playstry to picture the play on stagewith youthe reader, in the audience. The houselights dim(变暗). The curtains are about to open, and in a few minutes the action and dialogue will tell you the story.

    28. What do we know about the author from the first paragraph?

    A. He has written dozens of plays.

    B. He has a deep love for the theater.

    C. He is a professional stage actor.

    D. He likes reading short plays to others.

    29. What does the author avoid doing in his work?

    A. Stating the plays’ central ideas.

    B. Selecting works by famous playwrights.

    C. Including various types of plays.

    D. Offering information on the playwrights.

    30. What does the author suggest readers do while reading the plays?

    A. Control their feelings.

    B. Apply their acting skills.

    C. Use their imagination.

    D. Keep their audience in mind.

    31. What is this text?

    A. A short story.

    B. An introduction to a book.

    C. A play review.

    D. An advertisement for a theater.

    D

It’s not easy being a teenager —— nor is it easy being the parent of a teenagerYou can make your child feel angry, hurt or misunderstood by what you say without realizing it yourselfIt is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you’ll still be there for him when he needs you

Expect a lot from your child, just not everythingExcept for health and safety problems,  such as drug use or careless driving, consider everything else open to discussion. If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don’t insist he tell you what’s on his mindThe more you insist, the more likely that he’ll clam upInsteadlet him attempt to solve things by himself. At the same timeremind him that you’re always there for him if he should seek advice or help. Show respect for your teenager’s privacy. Never read his mail or listen in on personal conversations

Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child talks on the family’s telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for l5 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least all equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation(节制).Or if you are open to the idea, allow your teenager his own phone that he pays for with his own pocket money or a part-time job

32The main purpose of the text is to tell parents

         A. how to get along with a teenager

    B. how to help a teenager grow up

         C. how to understand a teenager

         D. how to respect a teenager

    33. What does the phrase "clam up" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

         A. refuse to talk                       B. show respect

    C. become excited                     D. seek help

    34. The last paragraph is about how to teach a teenager

         A. to pay for his own telephone          B. to use the phone in a sensible way

         C. to share the phone with friends        D. to answer the phone quickly

    35. What should parents do in raising a teenager according to the text?

         A. Not allow him to learn driving or take drugs.

         B. Let him have his own telephone.

         C. Give him advice only when necessary.

         D. Not talk about personal things with him.

    第二节  (5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5)

How to Improve Your Study Habits

Perhaps your are an average student with average intelligence. You do well enough in school, but you probably think you will never be a top student.   36   Yes, even students of average intelligence can be top students without additional work. Here are some tips for you:

     1. Plan your time carefully. Make a list of your weekly tasks. Then make a schedule or chart of your time. Fill in committed time such as eating, sleeping, meetings, classes, etc. Then decide on good, regular times for studying.  37  It’s important to set aside time for relaxation, hobbies, and entertainment as well. Furthermore, it will enable you to plan your activities so that you have adequate time for both work and play.

     2. Find a good place to study. Choose one place for your study area. It may be a desk or a chair at home or in the school library, but it should be comfortable, and it should not have distractions. When you begin to work, you should be able to concentrate on the subject.

     3.   38  Listening to what the teacher says in class means less work later. Sit where you can see and hear well. Take notes to help you remember what the teacher says.

     4. Study regularly.   39  Review important points mentioned in class as well as points you remain confused about. If you review your notes and textbook regularly, the material will become more meaningful and you will remember it longer. Regular review leads to improved performances on test.

     5. Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t worry excessively about a single test. Tests provide more than grades.   40

    1.    Be volunteer to raise questions.
    2.    Make good use of your time in class.
    3.    Go over your notes as soon as you can after class.

    D.  Those who make the best of their time study with more ease.

    E.  They also let you know what you need to spend more time studying on.

     F.  Of course, studying shouldn’t occupy all of the free time on the schedule.

    G.  This is not necessarily the case, however. You can receive better grades if you want to.

Dad pushed his finger into my basket. “What’s that?” he asked. “Mew,” said the basket.

Dad suddenly pulled his hand away. “Oh no,” he said. “Not a cat. No way. ”

I pulled Checkers from the basket. “It's not a cat. It’s a kitten. Can I keep him? Please? ”

Dad frowned for a minute, thinking. Then he rubbed Checkers under the chin(下巴). “You’ll have to take good care of him. ”

I hugged Checkers. “I will,” I promised. “He won't be any trouble at all.” And Checkers wasn’t —— until he grew into a cat. He wanted to be the first one in the house; and the first one out of the house. Sometimes he blocked dad in the way. “That cat! ” Dad complained. Checkers climbed onto our roof. He had no trouble getting down. Usually he aimed for Dad. “That cat!” Dad yelled. Checkers flushed the toilet and watched the water circle away. “That cat!” Dad was almost mad. Checkers hid in strange places. He liked to surprise people.

One day he hid under the couch. Dad walked by with a glass of orange juice. Checkers jumped out. He curled around Dad’s ankle and attacked Dad’s toes. Orange juice spilt all over the floor. Dad yelled and put Checkers outside. “Get out of my way, cat!” he said angrily. And he slammed the door.

Dad washed the injured toes and peeled open a bandage. He wrapped it around his big toe, and then he opened four more for his ankle.

I watched from the window. Checkers looked frustrated as he walked down the road.

“I’m sorry Checkers scratched you,” I said. “He was just playing. He didn't mean to hurt you. ”

“Don’t worry, ” said Dad. “That cat will be back. ”

After supper I called for Checkers. But Checkers didn’t come. Nighttime came. I called and called. I knocked his food dish with a spoon loudly. But still no Checkers. I left the porch light on. But the next morning Checkers still wasn’t there.

I carried a picture of Checkers to all the neighbors. I drew posters and hung them all over. But nobody found Checkers.

Days went by. Life wasn’t the same without that cat. I was angry with Dad. I didn’t think he missed Checkers at all.
