Are you planning to visit a relative’s or a friend’s place? Then do you know how to behave well? If you don’t know, please don’t be afraid. Here’s some advice for you to be a great guest.
If you are planning to visit the hosts, call them up instead of writing an e-mail. Before your visit, set the exact time period for which you will stay.
It is important that you reach their house on time. They will be happy to have a guest who plans his visit and follows the plan as well. It will be nice for you to bring a small gift for your hosts.
As the saying said, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” Every family has its own rules, so you’d better follow them. For example, don’t offer their children junk food, play loud music or play ball at their house.
While at the dinner table, you should be happy to eat whatever the host gives you because it’s impolite if you refuse. If you want to eat something special, you should cook it for everyone. Remember to help clean the dishes after the meal.
Don’t leave without thanking them for their good treat. Don’t forget to mention how much you enjoy your stay. When you go back, send the hosts some flowers along with a thank note. Thank them once again for being so nice to you. Don’t forget to invite the hosts to your place. This will make them feel very nice.
57. How should we set our time period with the hosts?
A. By phone. B. By e-mail. C. By Wechat. D. By QQ.
58. What does the underlined sentence “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” mean?
A. Wherever we are, we need to do as the Romans do.
B. We should follow the rules in the place that we visit.
C. When we visit a new place, people there should follow our rules.
D. We should learn from the Romans because what they do is always right.
59. What’s the purpose of this passage?
A. Show how to be a great host. B. Show how to be a great guest.
C. Introduce how to behave well at table. D. Describe how to make a plan before a visit.
60. Where is the passage probably from?
A. A science report. B. A website about manners.
C. A book about Roman culture. D. A magazine about places of interest.

Birth order (出生顺序) — does it matter? Are you different because you are the first, second, or third in your family — or maybe the last of nine?
A study found that first-borns have an average (平均的) IQ that is three points higher than people who fall into a different place in the birth order, perhaps because first-borns often help younger brothers and sisters, which improves their own skills. In 2007, an international organization of CEOs found that 43% of CEOs are first-borns, 33% are middle children, and 23% are last-borns. First-borns are more likely (可能的) to be doctors and astronauts (宇航员) and get higher pay.
If first-borns are more successful, last-borns are generally more agreeable (令人愉快的). They are also more likely to be funny, possibly to get attention from all the bigger people at the dinner table. Mark Twain and Stephen Colbert were both the youngest in large families. According to a 2007 Time magazine article, “The power of Birth Order”, last-borns are more likely to be artists and successful businessmen.
Then there are the middle children. They often feel that the oldest gets more rights, and the youngest is spoiled (宠坏的). Many middle children are short of one-on-one time with their parents, so they think that their parents often neglect them. However, middle children are more likely to grow into easy-going adults.
Many factors (因素) make us who we are, but if the research is correct, birth order may be one of the most important factors.
61. Who is more likely to be a CEO?
A. A first-born. B. A second-born. C. A third-born. D. A last-born.
62. What can we learn about Mark Twain?
A. He is a first-born. B. He is likely to be agreeable.
C. He is a middle child. D. He is likely to be given lower pay.
63. What does the underlined word “neglect” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. take pride in B. look forward to C. pay less attention to D. make a difference to
64. What can we learn from the research?
A. Birth order has no influence on IQ.
B. Birth order may decide who we are.
C. Last-borns are more likely to be doctors and astronauts.
D. First-borns are more likely to be artists and successful businessmen.
65. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Who improves your social skills? B. What makes you successful in life?
C. How can you grow into a big man? D. What influence birth order has on you?
Ⅸ. 任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,按要求完成66~70题。
What do you usually do in your spare time? Chatting online is now a national pastime in China, especially among the post-90s and post-00s generation. To some people, however, online chats can seem like a kind of polite conversation. Actually, there are some hidden rules we should follow.
Get to the Point (直入主题)
When sending a friend request, include your real name and any other personal information. We should value other people’s time. If there’s something you want, say it directly. Never send an “Are you there?” without any follow-up messages. The quicker that you get to the point, the more likely the other person is to reply.
Send the Right Things
Please send texts, not voice messages. It might be easier for you to speak than type (打字), but what about the person on the other end? They may be unable to listen to a 59-second message right now. Also, never send personal information by voice message—it is hard to note down. Emojis (表情符号) can save. the day when you find yourself in an embarrassing conversation, or words fail you.
Try to Understand
You can always judge (判断) a person’s meaning by their text messages. If the person on the other end says “Good night” or “I’m going to take a shower.” That’s probably not what they’re actually going to do, and it is just an excuse to stop talking to you. If someone hesitates (犹豫) for longer than three seconds before saying “Yes”, they probably really mean “No”. If you receive these emojis from friends who are older, read them literally (照字面地) (as a smile, a wave or a laugh). For the post-90s and post-00s generation, however, they could be speechlessness.

During the epidemic (疫情), we students in Luannan stayed at home for more than one month. From Monday to Friday, we studied online. The teachers taught us through Dingding, but sometimes I didn’t listen very carefully. My parents cooked delicious meals for me, because they couldn’t go out to work. I didn’t do much housework and I put on weight because of being short of exercising.
In the beginning, I felt excited about not going to school. But gradually I felt bored, because we couldn’t go outside to play and staying at home all day is not fun at all. I really hope that the epidemic can be over soon. I miss my classmates and teachers. I really want to go back to school.
