Parents everywhere are praising one Florida mom after she showed her daughter true love earlier this month in a lesson about being grateful. Haley Hassel was shopping for back-to-school supplies. She wanted to surprise her daughter Presleigh with a pencil case, which she knew her daughter would be happy about. Hassel was surprised, however, when her little girl threw the case in the garbage and stormed into her bedroom, slamming the door behind her.
“She yelled, ‘That’s stupid. Everyone in my class has that...I don’t want it anymore!’” Hassel explained in a Facebook post. Hassel said she didn’t immediately react because she wanted to deal with the anger properly.
“So by the time there was probably smoke coming out of my ears I was trying really hard not to completely lose it with this kid whom I have worked so hard to completely take care of on my own,” she wrote. “I thought I had always taught her to be grateful and know how lucky she was, but she needed a small wake up call!”
Hassel grabbed a plastic sandwich bag, wrote Presleigh’s name on it and handed it to her.
“I told her to get the pencil case out of the trash and that we would give it to one whose mommy and daddy don’t have money for any school supplies or someone who may not even have a mommy or daddy.”
She continued, “I explained to her she’s not entitled to(享有)anything special and she is taking for granted how lucky she is. So for now she will be using a bag and will personally be delivering the nice box to a child that could benefit from it.”

The Russia-Ukraine conflict(俄乌冲突)could lead to a global food crisis(危机)that will hit developing countries the hardest, United Nations(UN)Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned in Stockholm on Wednesday.
The Russia-Ukraine conflict is creating suffering and “must end now,” Guterres said at a press conference after the meeting.
He also called for swift decisions to resolve the food crisis that could arise from the conflict, putting developing countries most at risk.
The situation is fueling “a global crisis for food, energy and finance” that is affecting “the most vulnerable populations, countries and economies,” he warned. “A “perfect storm” is threatening to destroy the economies of many developing countries,” he added.
The food crisis cannot be resolved effectively unless Russia’s fertilizers and food production, and Ukraine’s food production can reach world markets again, he emphasized.
According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO), Russia and Ukraine are the world’s largest and fifth-largest wheat exporters, respectively(分别地). Together, they provide 19 percent of the world’s barley supply, 14 percent of wheat and 4 percent of corn, making up more than one third of global grain exports.
In Ukraine, which is known as the breadbasket of Europe, the conflict has left unharvested wheat that was planted months ago, while corns and sunflowers sown(播种)when the conflict broke out were left unfertilized. It is estimated that Ukraine’s grain production may fall by more than 50 percent in the current season.
Moreover, Russia is the leading producer of fertilizers, accounting for 13 percent of global production. Limiting Russian fertilizer exports due to the US’sanctions(制裁)has led to a rise in global fertilizer prices. This has forced farmers in Brazil, the United States and other major agricultural countries to reduce their use of fertilizers, which could affect future harvests.
8. What is the Guterres’ attitude towards ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict?
A. Hesitant. B. Disagreed. C. Uncertain. D. Certain.
9. What can be inferred from paragraph 6?
A. Food crisis will become a big worry.
B. Prices will be able to change our food patterns.
C. Corn and wheat will be the most important food.
D. They both play an important role in grain exports in the world.
10. Which one is NOT the Ukraine’s problems caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict .
A. The conflict has left unharvested wheat.
B. Corns and sunflowers were left unfertilized.
C. Limiting Russian fertilizer exports has led to a rise in global fertilizer prices.
D. Ukraine’s grain production may fall by more than 50 percent in the current season.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. How to Solve the Food Crisis Effectively.
B. The Food Crisis Cannot Be Resolved Effectively.
C. Calls Increase for Ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
D. UN Warns of Potential Global Food Crisis Due to Russia-Ukraine Conflict.

If you thought running was just great for the body, then think again. Scientists have found that the sport not only keeps people fit but also improves your brain power (脑力).
The research found that people who keep fit are more likely to have larger brains, better memories and clearer thinking. They also found that unfit people tended to have smaller brains and reduced cognitive skills. The findings add to a growing body of evidence which links exercise with helping protect the brain against ageing (老化) and also helping it replace dying cells (死细胞). This might reduce the risk of many illnesses and diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
One research paper within its latest issue sees scientists at Kentucky University putting 30 adults aged 59-69 on a treadmill (跑步机). Their heart and lung capacity was measured and an MRI scanner was used to assess the blood flow to their brains. Those who were less fit had smaller brains compared to the fitter volunteers who had larger brains. Scientists in Germany followed 21 adults aged between 60-77. As they went through a three-month fitness program, they saw improvements in their memory.
Researchers are not yet sure why exercise helps to protect brain cells but some research in mice has produced results. Mice, examined at the National Institute on Ageing, in Baltimore, found that cells in the hippocampus (海马体), an area of the brain used for memory, were actively reproducing while their fatter peers were in decline.
Linda Clare, professor of clinical psychology of ageing and dementia at Exeter University and a member of the Global Council on Brain Health told The Sunday Times: “Moderate intensity aerobic (有氧的) activity such as walking, cycling or running can produce changes in brain structure and function.”
12. Who tend to have larger brains, better memories and clearer thinking?
A. People who are healthy. B. People who are thin.
C. People who are unhealthy. D. People who are fat.
13. What do we learn from the experiment in paragraph 3?
A. Those who were less fit had larger brains.
B. Those who were fitter had smaller brains.
C. Exercise helps people improve their memory.
D. Old people doing exercise improve memory better than young people.
14. Accord to Linda Clare, what kind of activity can NOT produce changes in brain structure and function?
A. Walking. B. Singing.
C. Cycling. D. Running.
15. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To tell you sport improves your brain power.
B. To introduce some good ways to keep healthy.
C. To teach you how to best spend time in doing sports.
D. To introduce several ways to improve your memory.

Last week, as I was having breakfast in my truck, I noticed a boy, sitting by the road with his dog. He was holding a sign asking for money or food to help feed him and his dog. People drove past ignoring them.
When I finished my breakfast I decided to buy some food for them. As I was leaving, I pulled up beside him and handed him a bag of breakfast and a small bag of dog food. I asked him if he would be willing to work hard for the pay. He immediately said that he could be the hardest worker I had ever seen.
The next day he carried wood around and fetched tools for me all day without complaining once. His dog simply followed him. During the day I learned about his sad experiences. When the boy was 15 years old, his mother became critically ill. His father, who took care of the boy’s mother, could not go out to work, and the poor boy had to drop out of school because of being unable to afford his school tuition. Being too young, he failed to find a job. he had to beg near his home to help his parents.

【答案】 After that I continued to offer him some work and pay him. The boy still worked very hard. Even though he was assigned a very difficult job, he would not complain at all. Gradually, the boy became more active. One morning, the boy walked up to me very happily, telling me that his mother was getting better and his father could go out to work. Besides, he earned enough money to pay his tuition. He could finally go back to school.
Tears of joy flooded the boy’s eyes. Saying thanks, he threw himself into my arms and gave me a big hug. He sincerely said that without my help, he would not have the opportunity to study in school again. He promised to study hard in the future. If he had the opportunity, he would help people in need like me. I knew that a little kindness would also have a great impact.
