Bill is a top student and a clever boy. He is good at all subjects at school. He especially likes to study arithmetic (算术), and he can easily solve all the arithmetic problems he meets. When he comes across difficult arithmetic problems, he won’t ask teachers or his parents for help. Instead, he will think about the problems on his own and tries his best to find out the solutions.
One day, Bill passed by a fruit store on his way to school. There was a sign on the window that said, “Apples: Six for 5 cents (分).” Bill thought for a while and suddenly had an idea. Then he went into the store.
“How much are the apples?” he asked the store clerk.
“Six for 5 cents.”
“But I don’t want six apples.”
“How many apples do you want?”
“It is not a question of how many apples I want. It is a problem with the arithmetic.”
“What do you mean by a problem with the arithmetic?” the clerk asked.
“Well, if six apples are worth 5 cents, then five apples are worth 4 cents, four apples are worth 3 cents, three apples are worth 2 cents, and two apples are worth 1 cent, then one apple is worth nothing. I only want one apple, and if one apple is worth nothing then there is no need for me to pay you.”
