    One day anther f his episdes left me in tears. I strmed int his ffice, prepared t lse my jb if needed, but nt befre I let the man knw hw I felt. I pened the dr and Jack glanced up. “What? ” he said abruptly.
    Suddenly I knew what I had t d. After all, he deserved it. I sat acrss frm him, “Jack, the way yu’ve been treating me is wrng. I’ve never had anyne speak t me that way. As a prfessinal, it’s wrng, and it’s wrng fr me t allw it t cntinue. ”
    Jack snickered nervusly and leaned back in his chair. I clsed my eyes briefly. Gd help me, I prayed.
    “I want t make yu a prmise. I will be a friend, ” I said. “I will treat yu as yu deserve t be treated, with respect and kindness. Yu deserve that. Everybdy des. ” I slipped ut f the chair and clsed the dr behind me.
    Jack avided me the rest f the week. Prpsals, specs, and letters appeared n my desk while I was at lunch, and my crrected versins were nt seen again. I brught ckies t the ffice ne day and left a batch n his desk. Anther day I left a nte. “Hpe yur day is ging great, ” it read.
    Over the next few weeks, Jack reappeared. He was reserved, but there were n ther episdes. Cwrkers crnered me in the break rm. “Guess yu gt t Jack, ” they said. “Yu must have tld him ff gd. ”
    I shk my head. “Jack and I are becming friends, ” I said in faith. I refused t talk abut him. Every time I saw Jack in the hall, I smiled at him. After all, that’s what friends d.
    One year after ur “talk”, I discvered I had breast cancer. I was thirty-tw, the mther f three beautiful yung children, and scared. The cancer had metastasized t my lymph ndes and the statistics were nt great fr lng-term survival. After surgery, I visited with friends and lved nes wh tried t find
    the right wrds t say. N ne knew what t say, and many said the wrng things. Others wept, and I tried t encurage them. I clung t hpe.
    The last day f my hspital stay, the dr pened and Jack std awkwardly under the threshld. I waved him in with a smile. He walked ver t my bed and withut a wrd placed a bundle beside me. Inside the package lay several bulbs.   Tulips, he said.
    I smiled, nt understanding.   He cleared his thrat. “If yu plant them when yu get hme, they’ll cme up next spring. ” He shuffled his feet. “I just wanted yu t knw that I think yu’ll be there t see them when they cme up. ”
    Tears cluded my eyes and I reached ut my hand. “Thank yu, ” I whispered.   Jack grasped my hand and gruffly replied, “Yu’re welcme. Yu can’t see it nw, but next spring yu’ll see the clrs I picked ut fr yu. ” He turned and left withut anther wrd.
    I have watched thse red-and-white striped tulips push their way thrugh the sil every spring fr ver ten years nw. In fact, this September the dctr will declare me cured. I’ve seen my children graduate frm high schl and enter cllege.
    In a mment when I prayed fr just the right wrd, a man with very few wrds said all the right things. After all, that’s what friends d.
